Clarkson College ATA: Ireland & England

Day 1: Sunday, May 1 Depart Our adventure begins as we depart Omaha on our international flight, and wing our way over the Atlantic to Dublin, Ireland! We enjoy meals, beverages and movies in flight as provided by the airlines. IF Day 2: Monday, May 2 Glendalough, Ireland Upon arrival in Dublin, we clear customs and meet our coach and driver-guide. Then we depart for Glendalough in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains National Park and the setting for some of Ireland's most significant monastic ruins, including a superb round tower, stone churches and decorated Celtic crosses. We will stop at the visitor’s center and have free time to explore on our own. B, D Day 3: Tuesday, May 3 Dublin, Ireland Today we return to Dublin and meet our guide for a panoramic tour of Ireland's fair capital. During our tour we visit the impressive St. Patrick's Cathedral, home of Ireland's largest and most beautiful organ as well as memorials to Dean Jonathan Swift. We will also learn about Ha'Penny Bridge, the Temple Bar area, the Custom House, and Phoenix Park with its Papal Cross. After lunch, we visit Trinity College to view the Book of Kells and then Guinness Brewery for a wee sample. B Day 4: Wednesday, May 4 Dublin, Ireland Our day begins with an excursion to the Boyne Valley, battle site of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, where we will view one of the most spectacular Neolithic tombs in Europe, Newgrange. Built around 4000 BC, the prehistoric tombs will amaze you. This evening we enjoy dinner and music at a popular local pub. B, D Day 5: Thursday, May 5 Dublin, Ireland This is a free day to explore on our own. Just a few of the many possibilities are visiting some of Dublin’s many fine museums (National Gallery, Collins Barracks, Natural History Museum, Waterways Visitor Centre); shopping on Grafton or O’Connell Street; or relaxing in the arts and entertainment area of Temple Bar. B Day 6: Friday, May 6 Warwick, England We rise early and drive to the ferry port to cross the Irish Sea to Holyhead, Northern Wales. We explore Anglesey, a mystical oasis which was the last strong hold of the ancient Druids, who held the island against the Roman invasion and apparently insurmountable odds. In later years, the island’s sacred heritage continued with the settlement of the two monks, St Cebi the Dark and St Seiriol the Fair, who set up monasteries at Holyhead and Holy Penmon. Then we continue on to Warwick! B Day 7: Saturday, May 7 Warwick, England This morning we explore Stratford-on-Avon to visit the home of William Shakespeare and the famed Anne Hathaway home as well. Later, enjoy dinner together and then attend a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company at the historic Swan Theatre, a theater in the round. B, D Day 8: Sunday, May 8 London, England After breakfast, we explore medieval Warwick Castle with its magnificent towers and ramparts. The best-preserved castle in England, Warwick Castle offers you a thousand years of history. Afterwards, we depart for London. B

Day 9: Monday, May 9 London, England Today we begin with a locally guided tour. Highlighting our tour of London will be Big Ben and Parliament, Trafalgar Square with the Lord Nelson Column, Westminster Abbey, and, of course, Piccadilly Circus. We will also be able to see the changing of the guard, complete with horse guards and pageantry. The new guard departs Wellington Barracks and marches down Birdcage Walk to Buckingham Palace, where they trade places with the outgoing soldiers in the Household division of the British Army. We have free time for lunch at Covent Gardens and then visit the Tower of London. B Day 10: Tuesday, May 10 London, England This morning we have a guided tour of three medical museums in London: Florence Nightingale, Hunterian Museum, and the Old Operating Theatre. Late in the afternoon, we stop to enjoy High Tea, a true British tradition, followed by a ride on the London Eye. B, High Tea Day 11: Wednesday, May 11 London, England This is a free day to explore on your own. Possibilities include the British Museum, Olympic Park, homes of the Royals, the Docklands or Greenwich area, the British War Museum, and for art lovers, the Tate Gallery or National Gallery. Why not stop by St. James Church or Westminster Abbey to do a brass rubbing, and bring back one of the nicest souvenirs possible? And be sure to spend an hour (or two) at Harrods, one of the finest department stores in Europe. B Day 12: Tuesday, May 12 Return Regretfully, it's time to say “cheerio” and transfer the short distance to the airport, where our international flight is waiting to take us home. We return with memories of lovely landscapes, verdant fields, fabulous castles and ruins, interesting pubs and people, enchanting music, and new friends. Welcome home!
