II. 5irections1. Asking for 5irectionsWhen you are looking for something, it is sometimes easier to ask for directions. When you do,you have to be able to listen to the directions given. In this lesson, we will study listening a little

more so you can effectively understand a person giving you directions.

&ere are some key words you have to remember. I suggest you drill these in your headbecause they are very commonly used when giving directions. *here are many directionterminologies. I9ll cover all the common phrases. 'ou should be able to effectively givedirections and receive directions after this lesson.

/. Freeway !:planation America uses a freeway system. Freeways pass through all ma#or cities and are used veryfre%uently. If the distance is far, you probably will have to take the freeway. *o give directionsreferring to the freeway, you use =orth, $outh, !ast, or West. 7ther ways you might hear are=orthbound, $outhbound, Westbound, or !astbound.

"ost freeways also have e:it numbers. In many states, the numbers start at one from thebeginning of the state border and increases by one every mile. If someone says you shouldtake e:it 18?, you should stay on the road until you see e:it 18?. !ach e:it is clearly marked soyou don9t have to worry about missing it.

'ou will know you are going the wrong direction if the numbers are going in the wrong direction. For e:ample, if you need to take e:it 1-2, and the first e:it number is 1-1, and the ne:t one is1-4, and the ne:t one is 1-0, then you know you should turn around because the numbers aregetting larger.

8. 6egular 3racticeFor this practice session, there will be one %uestion with a long direction. 'ou shouldn9t read thete:t while listening. Instead, listen to the audio, and then without looking, try to write themdown. $ee if you can understand on the first attempt. &ere are several %uestions and answersfor practice.

@uestion( )!:cuse me. I9m looking for a supermarket. 5o you know where the closest one is+)

Answer( )'es. It is a couple miles away. What you want to do is go down this street for about amile. At 114th street, turn left. $tay on 114th until you pass three lights. 'ou should see -/thstreet. *urn right and you will see the supermarket #ust around the corner.)

@uestion( )!:cuse me. 5o you know where $tarbucks is located+)

Answer( )'es. <o down this street. When you reach a 9*9, turn right. At the ne:t stop sign, turnleft. 'ou9ll see a gas station on your left. $tarbucks is directly across the street.)

@uestion( )!:cuse me. I9m looking for est Western. Wasn9t there one around here+)

Answer( )'eah. ;et me think... the best way to get there is by turning right at the ne:t street. Immediately take another right on the ne:t street. <o for about 4 miles. When you see<reenwood Avenue, turn left. &ead down <reenwood for about 0 miles. I believe it will be onyour left hand side. If you pass a school, that means you went too far.)

@uestion( )!:cuse me. &ow do I get to the airport from here+) Answer( )*urn around and you9ll see an entrance to the freeway. <o south. 'ou9ll have to gofor about 1- miles. 'ou should see airport signs, but #ust in case, it is e:it number 1-. *urnright off the ramp and it will be straight ahead.)

9no.9 If they don9t have any cars available, they will say, )I9m sorry, we do not have any carsavailable today.) If that is the case, then go to the ne:t counter. "ost airports have numerouscar rental booths so you can keep asking until you find a company that has a car available. Ifyou are going during peak vacation periods, it might be good to call and reserve one. ut let9scontinue with this scenario.

)&ow much is insurance+)

*hey will also ask who is going to be the driver.

)Who is going to be the driver+))&ow many people are going to drive+)) Are all the drivers at least 4- years old+)

'ou will have to provide a driver9s license. If you are from a different country then you should atleast have an international driver9s license prepared from your country.

)Can I see your driver9s license+))"ay I have your driver9s license+))I will need to see your driver9s license.)

. 3rice and 6ulesFinally, they will tell you the price and you will have to pay with a credit card.

rental car company has a location at the airport you are flying into.

)I need one at ;os Angeles Airport.))I am flying into ;os Angeles Airport.)

If they have one, they will say they do and start asking you similar %uestions we alreadycovered. We will not repeat them here, but I will have a practice session giving an e:ampledialog on making a reservation below.

*hey might ask you for a credit card number on the phone. If you don9t call and cancel, youmight be charged. $o if you need to cancel, remember to call and cancel at least 4 hours

before the date. I am not sure if it is 4 hours. 'ou should ask and verify.

)If I need to cancel, when should I do that by+)

When you arrive at the counter, you will tell the person that you have a reservation.

. 6estaurant1. Fast Food*here are many types of restaurant. In this lesson, we will cover what you need to say in fastfood restaurants, regular sit down restaurants, and lu:ury fine dining restaurants.

Fast Food

"c5onald9s is a popular restaurant, so I will use "c5onald9s as an e:ample. *he only thing youdo when you go to a fast food restaurant is to go to the counter and order your food, then payfor it. *hat9s all. ;et9s go through some %uick sentences.

A common mistake is to answer yes or no when you don9t know the answer. I heard of manystories when the cashier asks, 9for here or to go9, and the person says, 9yes9. It is simple to

avoid this mistake by studying and being prepared.

In most fastfood restaurants, it is even easier to order. *hey have value meals and you #usthave to say a number.

)I9ll take number 4.)

ut the difference is that there are sies.

)I9ll take a coke.))I9ll have an orange #uice.))Water will be fine.))Can I have a glass of water+)

After they bring out your drinks, they will take your order. *he reason they do this is becausemost people know what they want to drink, but want a few minutes to decide what to eat.

)"ay I take your order+))What would you like to order+)) Are you ready to order+)

)What would you like today+)

If you need more time, you can simply say, )Can I have a couple more minutes+)

When you are ready to order, #ust read off what you want.

)I9ll take the $alisbury steak with hash browns.)

5epending on what you order, they will have side options they will ask you about. ;istencarefully to your choices and choose one. 'ou should prepare yourself by reading the menucarefully. It should indicate what your options are.

When you are almost done with your meal, they might ask if you want some dessert.

)Would you like dessert today+))Would you like our dessert menu+))Would you like to order any dessert+)) Any dessert for you today+))Would you like to hear our dessert special+)

If you are finished and want your bill, you can look for the server, make eye contact, and raiseyour hand. When they come by, ask them for the bill.

)Can I have my check+))Can I have my bill+))I9m ready for my bill.))I would like my check please.)

. Fine 5ining*he process of fine dining is very similar to the previous e:ample. I9ll list a couple of additionsfor fine dining that I didn9t include above.

If you order wine, they will pour a tiny bit into your glass. 'ou should immediately take a drink of it and shake your head yes. After you approve, they will pour your glass and other glasses full

of the wine.

$ome restaurants need to prepare dessert 42 minutes in advance. *hat means they will askyou if you are going to have dessert while you are eating instead of waiting for you to complete.

Finally, these types of restaurants take reservations. &ere is an e:ample of making areservation through the phone.

II. *alking to $trangers

1. *alking to $trangers*here are many opportunities to talk with strangers. If you are waiting for a bus, or if you arewaiting in line, strangers start talking to each other. Another opportunity is if you are on a ferryor in the park sitting on a bench. asically, opportunities can come everywhere. 'ou shouldpractice this section if you want to talk with different people. *alking to strangers re%uire a lot ofsmall talk. 'ou can study more about small talk in the !nglish ;esson section. For now, we willcover things like talking about where you came from.

If you look like a tourist, some people will ask where you are from. *his is #ust a way to get toknow strangers. It9s %uite common to talk with strangers here. &ere are some %uestions youmight hear.

) Are you visiting from somewhere+))'es. I9m visiting from >orea.)

) Are you on vacation here+))'es. I9m taking a vacation from >orea.)

It9s very common for strangers to talk to each other if you are at a tourist location. For e:ample,if you are at 5isney ;and and you are sitting down, someone ne:t to you might ask some%uestions assuming you are visiting from somewhere.

)&ow are you en#oying your vacation+))I9m having a great time. &ow about you+)

)It9s pretty fun here. Are you having a good time+))*his is a great place. I9m having a lot of fun. Are you having fun+)

) Are you here with your family+))I9m here with my wife and 4 kids. *hey are so e:cited to be here.)

24

Page 25: Travel Practice

)"y kids love this place. *his is our third time here. &ave you been here before+))*his is my first time here. I always wanted to come and I9m having a great time.)

4. $tarting a Conversation*he best time to start a conversation is when you are ne:t to someone who is not moving. 'ou

can9t start talking to someone walking away from you. *hen you are bothering them by makingthem stop. ut if you are sitting down on a bench and someone is ne:t to you, or you are at abeach and someone is close by, you can start a conversation by saying something generic. &ere are some conversation starting sentences. ut after you make your first sentence, youshould see by their reaction if they want to continue the conversation or not. If they appear alittle rude, then stop talking to them. 'ou don9t have to say anything to stop talking. *hey don9te:pect you to. *hey e:pect you to not say another word. ut if they ask a %uestion back, andthey seem friendly, then you can continue with the conversation.

)*he weather is so nice today. Are you from around here+))&ow is your day going so far+)

)*here are a lot of people out here today. Is this normal+)

An easy way to start talking is when you notice something such as their kids, family, or a dogthey might be with.

) Are you here with your family+)) Are you on vacation+)

) Are those your kids+ *hey9re so cute+))What kind of dog is that+)

It9s much easier if they start the conversation. If they make a comment or ask a %uestion, thenyou know that they would like to talk.

Finally, it9s common for these types of conversation to last only a couple of minutes. $o don9tfeel bad or feel pressured to keep the conversation alive.

*here isn9t that much more to tell you about speaking with strangers. *he best way tounderstand what types of things are said in a stranger to stranger conversation is to hear acouple of e:amples. I will give a couple e:amples to help you understand more.
