Documents needed

There are few official documents required for acquiring Tibet travel permits. Tibet is a Chinese province

officially though operates autonomously and thus a valid Chinese Visa is required to acquire the Tibet

travel permit. Since it is an autonomous region and is not as same as the other parts of the Mainland

China, few more documents are required in order to travel to Tibet. The Tibet Travel Permits are not the

same for all the places in Tibet and they vary from places with the Tibet. Special permits are required for

those willing to visit the Mt. Everest camp or the Mt. Kailash. There are four main types of permits

required for travelling to Tibet, they are the China Visa or the Tibet Group Visa, Tibet Travel Permit,

Alien’s Travel Permits and the Military Permits. It is necessary for every traveller to apply for the permits

atleast 15 days prior to the journey.

There are basically two types of Chinese Visas, the Alien Visa and the Group Visa. The alien visas which

are marked with an ‘L’ are given to the foreigners who come to Tibet for a short stay that is about 30

days and doesn’t extend beyond 90 days of stay. The Group Visa on the other hand is applicable to

tourists who travel to Tibet in groups and these visas are issued on a separate paper instead of on the

passports. For the tourists who will be entering Tibet from Kathmandu in Nepal requires to have the Visa

issued from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu no matter even if they already have a Chinese Visa.
