Module brief and duration The process

The module was called ‘Editorial Design, Digitaler Schriftentwurf’ and was con-ducted by Prof. Walter Hellmann, the head of Visual Communication department at FHH and Florian Schick of ‘Schick Fonts’, Ber-lin. It was conducted for the 3rd semes-ter under graduate graphic design students and was for 12 weeks spread over 3 months, with classes once every week on Thurs-day’s, where one is supposed to discuss work done over the week and improvise. The brief was to design and digitalise a font based on the explora-tions and understanding of typography done in class.

The first stage was to understand the forms of the letters and we were asked to choose objects, materials or anything out of which one can make a shape, and create and arrange alphabets from A-Z. The next stage was exploring more of the structure of alphabets through excercises done from a website - www.typecooker.com. Once we figured out the kind of font we wanted to do, the third stage was to start exploring our own designs for the font, ultimately culiminating into a digitalised font. At the end of the module was an exhibition at an art studio in Linden, Hannover which was open for public viewing where all the fonts done by the class were put up on display for 1 week.

Stage 1 - ‘Peahaus’

I chose a split pea to arrange and struc-ture my font. My inspiration was the Bau-haus style, since I thought it was more ‘local’ and wanted to give it a try. Two nights of trying to fit the tiny split peas into a 3” by 3” square box gave the following results which I later vector-ised on Illustrator.

Stage 2 - TypeCooker

Typecooker is a project byErik van Blokland. It is a tool for gen-erating type-drawing exercises wherein, the system creates a random list of re-quirements for a typeface, but with rel-evant criteria. Each exercise contains different rules and one is supposed to work on a style based on the parameters. It is a fun and interesting way to learn and analyse the characteristics of type which would later help in designing a typeface on our own.

Page 14: Travel Diary font

Stage 3 - Choosing a style

Once I got a little hang of the structure of the letter, I got down to exploring different styles and which one was closer to my interest. Based on my love for hand written type, I wanted to explore more of it and thought I’d try out a very fresh, handwritten style.

Stage 4 - First trial

Once I got a little hang of the structure of the letter, I got down to exploring different styles and which one was closer to my interest. Based on my love for hand written type, I wanted to explore more of it and thought I’d try out a very fresh, handwritten style.

Stage 5 - Working on a grid

Not too happy with the first attempt, this time I thought I’d take some more time and work on a grid as the first one looked very rough and was not what I had in mind. I wanted a more bold, stable and at the same time a fun font. Florian sug-gested me to increase the thickness of the serif and make it more bold to give that strong character to the font which I was looking for. I chose a 2” by 2” grid and started working inside the box. I sketched on paper, scanned them, vec-torised in Adobe Illustrator and finally digitalised in FontLab.

Exhibition

We were then required to make a poster using the font we created for an exhibi-tion in Linden. It was displayed for one week for public viewing.
