ACCORDING TO research undertaken byBarclays, ‘more than one in ten hospitalityoperators generate up to half of all sales

through social media’. Given that 21 millionhouseholds in Britain now have internet access, thisis an area that those in the tourism sector canhardly afford to ignore. The question is – how many, apart from the ‘big’ players’, actually use socialmedia or, if they do, make the best use of it? At arecent VisitGuernsey digital seminar, more than 100people attended and it was clear that someproprietors of smaller businesses such as self-catering, B&Bs etc do not necessarily have the timeor resources to investigate and work on this aspectof marketing, and are still baffled by social mediaand what it can do to expand their business.

As online travel writer and author, Robin Mead, explains: "Although the travel industry has beenquicker than most to adapt to – and adopt – newtechnology, the whole IT business is still a steeplearning curve for many."

It is clear that businesses have to use socialmedia wisely – it needs to be planned in advance, have a ‘personality’ of its own, contain clearmessages targeted at the right audience and bemonitored. It also needs to be up-to-date. Anengaging and aspirational Facebook page can dowonders for a business.

"You reach a different audience through thesemedia. Hopefully, those followers and likers willbe so enthralled they will go to the main websiteand who knows - go on to make a booking…." saysIan Hawkes of Cottage in the Country.

Twitter, too, is a user-friendly medium forthose who are less experienced in this form ofcommunication, being limited to a mere 140characters. Brian Donnelly of The MICE(Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events)Network advises: "You can send the same generalmessage about five times in any 24-hour period. This is because different people are looking atTwitter at different times in the day, partlybecause of time zones."

Both Twitter and Facebook are now review sitestoo which means that businesses have anopportunity to interact with their customers. Alwaysreact quickly, whether comments are positive ornegative (it’s a good idea to have a pre-preparedpolicy to deal with these).

So, for those of you out there who aresocial media virgins, get online

and happy Tweeting!

FAM TRIPS and personal holidays are very importantsales tools for all of the staff at Travel Club Elite.Within the team, we take between eight and ten fam

trips every year and we try to ensure that everyone in theoffice has the chance to experience one. Our managingdirector recognises that it is vital for everyone in thecompany to experience the holidays that we offer; that way,we can all pass on our knowledge to customers andcolleagues.

One of our most recent fam trips was an eight-day visit toChina with AITO operator, Wendy Wu. So, what did we see,do and learn about the destination? The trip kicked off inShanghai – ‘the Paris of the East’, with a visit to the exoticYu Gardens. ‘Yu’ in Chinese means ‘pleasing and satisfying’and it certainly was – it felt like a little oasis in the centre ofa busy city. The gardens have an interesting history too, built for the parents of Pan Yunduan, a government officerof the Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644).

We moved onto Shanghai’s Old Town - a perfectcombination of gardens, temples, old architecture, civilculture, business, souvenirs and food – and then strolledalong the banks of Huangpu River, taking in buildings ofdifferent architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque,Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. I was in aweof the huge spectrum of buildings, which were particularlymagnificent during our evening cruise. Although the city hascrowds, traffic and commercialism, I will always rememberthe night view and the building structures that the city isfamous for.

We then flew to Guilin - considered to be the pearl ofChina's thriving tourist industry on account of its naturalbeauty and historic treasures. The strangely-shaped hills, together with crystal-clear waters and wonderful caves, make the city a very appealing destination.

The Reed Flute Cave was a highlight – it’s a spectacularcave created by water erosion and boasts a variety ofstalactites, stone pillars and rock formations. Its namecomes from the verdant reeds growing nearby, with whichlocals make flutes. Be warned - you will be hounded bysellers in and around the caves. We also took a Li RiverCruise in Guilin, meandering slowly past villages, waterbuffalo and rice paddies, with school kids and fishermanfloating by on bamboo rafts.

Another flight then took us to the former ancient capitalof Xian, which included a visit to the Muslim Quarter. Itoffers authentic locally-made Muslim food, includingsteamed stuffed buns of Jiasan. Xian is a ‘must see’ – totally

authentic, oozing with culture and no Nandos or McDonaldsto spoil the landscape!

We also witnessed the Terracotta Warriors here, figurescreated 2,000 years ago to accompany Qin Shihuang into theafterlife. This did not disappoint - it felt like entering asacred house where hushed whispers of awe filled the air.Although I researched the Warriors, I didn’t expect them tobe life-size. I was also surprised to see that excavations areon-going, with archaeologists painstakingly dusting away atthe many broken pieces of pottery. More than 7,000soldiers, horses and chariots have been unearthed andrestored so far.

Next, we took a morning flight to Beijing, China’s capitalcity. One of the obvious highlights was a visit to TiananmenSquare in the city centre, including the Forbidden City, theworld’s largest palace complex. The Last Emperor wasfilmed here and the history behind it is fascinating. Our tourguide explained how the Emperors lived here together withhundreds of staff, at times treating them very cruelly.

Finally, the best part of our trip was saved until last - TheGreat Wall - one of the wonders of the world. I was soexcited to walk the wall, which has been on my bucket-listfor many years. Our climb up to the first section wasgruelling, but worth it. The sight of the wall snaking alongthe mountains was glorious. I took time away from the othertourists to find a peaceful spot in which to absorb thisfamous sight.

It was then time to say farewell to China. My journey wasover too soon and, before I knew it, we were beingpampered by the BA crew once again. Thank you Wendy Wu!

Who is your ideal travelling companion? Has to be my laptop, without it I am lost(God bless Skype!). I can stay in contactwith my two daughters who seem totake great pleasure in adding to my greyhair on a daily basis.

Where was your last work-related trip? Just recently I was coming back fromBelfast city after a successful two days ofevents with some of the most amazingindependent agents. I have to sayNorthern Irish travel agents are veryhospitable and a pleasure to deal with, Ilove my trips to NI.

If you were a celebrity who would you choose to be and why? Me, I am a celebrity to my twodaughters, or so they tell me when theywant something…

What three words would yourfriends use to describe you? Passionate, honest and loyal - maybe toohonest for my own good sometimes….

What have your travels taught you? Be respectful, open-minded and embraceother traditions. If you do that, everyjourney will be an adventure.

What is the best advice you recall?Treat others as you would like to betreated.

If you could have a room full of any one thing, what would it be?Friendly faces, which I consistently get attravel conferences, hence I am still in theindustry.

If you could change three things inthe industry, what would they be?1. I would love some agents andoperators to put value on the knowledge, expertise and service they provide. I don’t

believe being the cheapest is everythingto a consumer (we have the internet forthat). 2. Discounting is something thatshould stop in my opinion (if you are notmaking money in any business you electto be in, then you won’t be around formuch longer). 3. Lastly people who arenot willing to learn. I often hear peoplesaying ‘I have done it all, I knoweverything, there is nothing anyone canteach me’ – personally I learn somethingnew every day. In an industry whereknowledge is priceless, it is disappointingthat some people feel they knoweverything.

Who has been the biggestinspiration/influence in your career? I have learnt a lot from some very kind, clever and helpful people in thiswonderful industry, however the personwho has influenced my career the mosthas to be my current boss Ted Wake.

Hisham MahmoudThe agency sales manager UK & Ireland of KirkerHolidays would love the ability to read people’s

minds and says he’s lost without his laptop...

If you were not doing this job, what would you be doing? I would still be running mywatersports and fishing company inAfrica, still in travel I suppose.

What is your motto in life? Be passionate in everything you do.

What is your favourite mode of travel? Trains (not in the UK) on thecontinent. The service is great, thescenery is fantastic, it’s city centre tocity centre travel and no two hourschecking-in process, yippeee!

If you had a super power what would it be and why? Reading people’s minds. I would loveto understand why people sometimesbehave in the manner they do.

What was your nickname at school and why? H, it was a lot easier than trying toget other people to pronounce myname properly. Someone once calledme Hashish, he must have beensmoking a lot of that stuff so I askedhim to call me H, a lot easier for allinvolved.

What item do you always take with you when travelling? Mobile phone, what would we dowithout the mobile phone thesedays? I feel naked if I don’t carry mymobile phone.

What's your favourite airline and why? Used to be BMI, the staff were alwaysprofessional, genuine, friendly andenthusiastic. Now I elect BA whom Iam not particularly happy with themat this present moment, but probablythe best in what is available on theroutes I frequently use.
