The Treetop Walking Path

EXCEPTIONAL VALUE OF ANYKŠČIAI REGIONAL PARK

Anykščiai Regional Park (ARP) is unimaginable without the Forest of Anykščiai praised by Baranauskas A., Puntukas Stone, Biliūnas J. “Laimės žiburys” (“The Light of Happiness”), Rubikiai Lake, Voruta Mound and many other objects of natural and cultural heritage. Recently, the unique complex of The Treetop Wal-king Path has been opened for visitors.

Landscape

Nature has generously endowed APR with plenty of colours and shapes. Here you can find Šventoji River valley which has been scoured during glacial period, furrowed by old river beds and thermokarst lakes. Scattered around are landforms, gullies, and erosion cirque of Kurkliai. Here calmly rustling stretches the famous forest of Anykščiai with floodplains of Šventoji River and small quagmire-type lake Budragaidis surrounded by the forest. In the troughs between the hills stretches the magnificent lakes of Rubikiai-Musejus with small islands here and there. Also, there are old valley of Anykšta and Virinta.

Inanimate nature

In the landscape reserve of the forest of Anykščiai, lays the second in size boulder stone in Lithuania called Puntukas Stone, and whispers the largest in the country freshwater spring called the Queens Quagmire. In the exposures of Vetygala, Varius and others, one can observe layers of quartz sand which is very characteristic to Anykščiai region. In the Rubikiai lake located in the regional park there are 16 islands with very interesting na-mes, such as Pertako, Bučinė, Varnagrotė, Česnakinė, Liepinė, Didžioji, etc.

Live nature

More than 30 plants registered in the Lithuanian Red Book can be found in the park. Here you can also find protected broadleaf and mixed forest communities with oak, ash tree, spruce, and maple which serve as a shelter for rare plant species.

Cultural heritage

Anykščiai was the homeland for famous Lithuanian writers Baranauskas A., Biliūnas J., Vienuolis-Žukauskas A. The preserved authentic granary still reminds about the work by Baranauskas A. This granary was the place where the famous piece by Baranauskas “The Forest of Anykščiai” was born. Near the granary stands the house-museum of Vienuolis-Zukauskas A. On the Liudiskių Hill, stands the 14 metres high tomb monument called The Light of Happiness for the writer Biliūnas J.; to reach this monument one must climb 90 steps. In Anykščiai region, the following objects of cultural heritage are preserved: the only one in Lithuania Horse Museum, more than a hundred years old narrow-gauge rail-way train, bas-reliefs of the pilots Darius S. and Girėnas S. carved on the Puntukas Stone, and the most explored in Lithuania Šeimyniškėliai (Voruta) Mound. Some sources claim there used to stand the Voruta Castle of the King Mindaugas. In the centre of the city of Anykščiai, you can find the highest in Lithuania two-tower church of St. Matthew.

Exceptional events, live traditions

Every year, an exceptional traditional festival called “Bėk bėk, žirgeli” is arranged in Niū-ronys village. During this festival people can admire not only beautiful horses but also take a look to their saddlery, harnesses and springless carriages called lineika decorated with home woven horsecloths. We offer to explore the objects of natural and cultural heritage by traveling following land and water routes. In this book, you will find 3 hiking routes, 4 cycling routes, 3 water routes, and 2 car routes. The most of the routes starts at the ARP visitors centre. We suggest visiting this centre before starting your trip. The employees of the ARP centre will introduce you to the park rules, help to plan your trip, and answer to your questions.

RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR IN NATURE

Use motor vehicles only on roads. Park them on roadsides, parking lots, at least 25 meters from water bodies. AVOID driving on the grass or forest floor.

FISHING requires fishing permit or fishing license (in leased or private water bodies).REMEMBER: sailing in water bodies is only allowed when using small water vehicles.

When collecting herbal plants, leave at least one third of blossoms for seeds to ma-ture. Do not destroy non-edible fungi or plants - they are also a part of nature and animal food.REMEMBER: What is beautiful in nature is often rare. Do not pick plants - take pictu-res of them instead.

SET UP CAMPS only in the sites marked as campsites. Here you are allowed to pitch your tents, and kindle fires.REMEMBER: there are quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Stoke your fires only in marked and specially set up sites. When such fireplaces are absent, use portable grills. Collect only dry wood for your fireplaces, trees belong to the owners of the forest. Do not stoke fires during drought periods when the rate of forest fires is 4 to 5.REMEMBER: having noticed a fire, call emergency number 112.

DO NOT MAKE NOISE: loud music, shouting, fireworks, engine sounds, shooting are unusual sounds in nature. They frighten animals and push them out of their habitati-ons.REMEMBER: noise is especially dangerous for nesting birds and cubbing animals.

Do not harm the environment by your hygiene routines. Use environment-friendly means only: laundering soap, baking soda, vinegar, salt and ash. Pour the dirty wa-ter away from water bodies.REMEMBER: the majority of synthetic chemical compounds are harmful and accumu-late in living organisms.

Use a shovel. When dealing with your natural issues, use the cat’s method: dig out a pit, defecate, and fill the pit up.REMEMBER: even odorless and undyed toilet paper needs a year to disintegrate in nature.

COLLECT AND TAKE your rubbish with you. Food waste and packaging attract wild animals and may become a cause of their death.REMEMBER: Burning of plastic, colored, and film-covered packaging is harmful due to emission of toxic chemical compounds.

TAKE CARE of your dogs. Do not allow your dogs to run unleashed. They might da-mage habitations, or injure young animals, or other visitors.REMEMBER: you are required to collect your pet droppings.

STONES

11 PunTukAS’ BROTHER

This stone is like a brother to the Stone Puntukas and if excavated it could com-pete with its brother. The stone is 6 m long, 4.7 m wide, and 1.7 high if me-asured from the ground. It is flat and impressive stone. On one side, Puntu-kas’ brother has a crack which makes it resembling a fossilized beast with its jaws opened. Puntukas’ brother is of-ten visited as it lies in Anykščiai wood’s landscape reservation. Writer Antanas Vienuolis used to say that near the Pun-tukas’ brother there used to be ancient Lithuanian temple. In 1964, this stone was announced a natural monument, and in 1985, it was established as geo-logical natural monument.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.509391, 25.071159.

10 STOnE PunTukAS

Natural and cultural heritage - Stone Puntukas - is located in the Anykščiai wood’s landscape reservation. This is the second largest stone in Lithuania. Pun-tukas is 6.9 m long, 6.7 m long, and 5.7 m high (1.5 m from the ground), and weighs 265 tons. It is a Rapakivi gra-nite (structural variety of granite) clod brought by glaciers from Finland 14-20 thousand years ago during the last glacial period. Puntukas is interesting to visitors not only as a spectacular geolo-gical monument or a mythological stone surrounded by legends, but also as a place for commemoration of the legen-dary pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. During German occupation, in the midsummer of 1943, sculptor Bro-nius Pundzius engraved on this stone the portraits and quotes from last wills of Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas who have made through the Atlantic Ocean. In 2000, this stone was established as geological natural monument.

MOUNDS

15 LIudIškIAI MOund

Studies show that in 3-5th century a wooden defense castle stood there. The forest is angraved by deep erosive hills. The mound stands on a separate hill at the highest point of the string of hills called Aruodai which forms the edge of the river Šventoji upper terrace. The top of the mound is flat and oval in shape. The mound has steep slopes that are from 6 m (in the north) to 17 m (in the south) high. In 1990, the mound was being studied by the Lithuanian Institute of History (leader Gintautas Zabiela). The section of the mound at the eastern part and slope revealed a cultural layer of up to 20 cm with remains of striped and rough pottery and clay-covered wo-oden blocks with stone paving on the inner side. The mound dates back to the first half of the first millennium.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.508718, 25.133876.

14 šEIMynIškėLIAI (VORuTA) MOund

This, one of the largest and most spectacular mounds in Highlands, is surrounded by two deep valleys and streems and Vorelis and Volupis. Some historians believe that it is the place where King’s Mindaugas Voruta Castle used to stand. Today, it is the most widely studied mound in Lithu-ania, and one of the most studied mounds in Eastern Baltic region. In 1990 started archeological studies of the mound. Over the 11 seasons of studies revealed various findings including individual metal, stone, pot-tery items, ceramic shards, approxi-mately 1,000 animal bones, 51 pillar places, 3 burnt furnaces, residues of wooden fortifications, brass braided bracelet, crossbow arrowheads, work tools, ison and brass weights, clay pottery, silver cross pendant.

16 BIJEIkIAI MOund

This mound is an oblong hill standing in the north-south direction surrounded by the Rubikiai Lake from the western and northern part, and by the Dusynas Lake from the east part. On the nothern slope of the mound, at the eastern foothill, the used to ba an ancient settlement on the western shore of Dusynas Lake. In 1943, local residents supervised by Burbi kis primary school teacher Grigas made a section in the northern slope of the mound where revealed a cultural layer of up to 1.5 m. In 1969 and 1974, the Lithuanian Institute of History carried out exploratory archeological studies of the mound. Traces of ancient settlement were found in the south-eastern and north-western foothills, including fragments of molded pottery. The findings are kept in the Lithuanian National Museum.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.488637, 25.265419.

17 PILIAkALnIS MOund

The mound has sloping si-des, only the slope facing the lake is quite steep and approximately 8 metres high. The top of the mound is not clearly defined and merges with the sloping sides. It is oval in shape and oblong to the north-western and south-eastern direction. The mound has been disrupted by tilling and starts to accrete. In 2003, a stone monument was erected on the top of the mound. The mound was ex-plored by the Lithuanian Ins-titute of History in 1969, and by Scientific Methodological Board in 1974. The mound dates back to the early first millenium.

19 PALATAVIS MOund

The top of the mound is almost round, 30-33 m in diameter, with slightly protuberant centre. On the north-western edge of the top, from the side of the eminence that was not used for the mound, there is a half-moon shaped ram-part with sinking sides. The steep slopes of the mound reaches up to 15 m. The mound was discovered in 1997 following the information collected by the researcher in regional studies Raimundas Guobis. During the same year, when

exploring the mound, archeologist Gintautas Zabiela found grey cultural layer at certain parts of the top of the mound with burnt stones, and 3 metal articles with the help of metal detec-tor. Judging from the outside and archeological findings, Palatavis mound dates back to the 13-14 century. Based on writen resources, it relates to Mindaugas’ Latava castle where he issued two donation deeds in 1253 and 1260. Since the deed issued in 1253 was for the oc-casion of coronation, the mound also relates to the place of Mindaugas coronation.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.58272, 25.0128.

20 RuBIkIAI MOund

This mound stands on Pertakas (Piliakalnis) island located 60 m from the northern bank of Rubikiai lake, on the hill protruding in the sout-heastern part. The top of the mount is oval in shape, and oblong to the north-easterm and south-western direction, 27 × 18 m in size. It has steep slopes with the height of up to 7 me-tres. The island is overgrown with leafy trees.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.525094, 25.525094.

18 BuIVydAI MOund

The mound dates back to the mid first mil-lelium and early second millenium. For the south, east and west it is surrounded by deep spring valley, and from the north there are arable fields. The slopes are steep and rea-ches 13 m. The top of the mound used to be tilled, and eventually overgrown with trees that were cut out in the early 21 century. In 1969, the Lithuanian Institute of History car-ried out exploratory archeological studies of the mound (leader A. Tautavičius). During the studies, fragments of molded striped pottery were found at the top of the mound, and re-mains of stone paving inside the mound. The territory of the mound was additional explored in 1975 and 1982, and in 1999, the mound was cleaned from bushes by local residents.

EXPOSURES

21 VETygALA EXPOSuRE

This exposure is also called the Hill of Žėba as it forms the sourthern 420 metres long part of Žėba Hill. It is one of the biggest exposure of prequ-arternary formations in Lithuania. It is 20-30 m in height and 25 m in width. According to geologists, it is unique exposure because it is like an open book of Anykščiai region natural history revealing preglacial approximately 400 million years old layers composed of ligh quartz and mica sand. These layers comprises plates of Asterolepis radiata Rohon, poorly developed fish having no sce-leton, the age of which reaches 300-350 million years. These fishes are recorded in the Lithuania’s Book of Records (1993) as the oldest fishes found in Lithuania. Vetygala Exposure is natural geological monument since 1964.

Coordinates (WGS) 55.454821, 25.001936.

22 VARIuS EXPOSuRE

It is almost 15 metres high undermined right bank of Varius river (named un-der the copper colour of its water). The length of the exposure along the Varius River is approximately 26 metres. The quarternary thickening of Varius Expo-sure is characterised by deposits pushed and wrinkled by glaciers. According to the studies of spores and pollen, it may be claimed that carbonaceous quartz sand laying in the lower part of the ex-posure formed in lower Miocene (approx. 5 million years ago), and the pollen-free white quartz sand above it formed much later, in the late Pleistocene (approx. 12 thousand years ago) or even in the early Quaternary period (current development period of the Earth). It is a natural geolo-gical heritage.

SPRINGS

35 kAVARSkAS TuFA OR ST. JOHn’S BAPTIST SPRIng

The spring comes out in suffusion cirque located in the upper part of the right slope of Šventoji River va-lley. In the recess of the spring and at its edges percolating are waters saturated with calcium salts resul-ting in formation of tufa which are also called freshwater carbonates. Calcium enriched water is the key factor determining formation of tufa. Since the old times it is believed that spring water containing fossil lime-stone has healing powers, provides energy, strength, and heals wounds. Water comes to this spring by seven streams, and there is a stone well that was built to facilitate running of water. People drink this water and use it to wash themselves. Beside the stream there is a column shrine build for the St. John Baptist.

34 QuEEn’S QuAgMIRE

One of the biggest streams of freshwater in Li-thuania called Queen’s quagmire is located at the foot of the steep right slope of Šventoji River. Excess water of the spring flows into Šventoji River by a small creek. Currently the stream re-minds a small lake or a pond. Queen’s quagmire covers the area of approximately 0.7 ha, and is up to 3 m deep. Because of its depth and cons-tant springing up of water, the quagmire does not freeze even on coldest days. The spring is sur-rounded by forest making it a quiet and peaceful place to be. Queen’s quagmire is famous not only for its size but also because of the legends related to this place. The story says there was a queen who disappeared in the quagmire together with her carriage and horses. Another legend tells about a priestess who was looking after the altar for the goddess Milda, and drowned herself thus demonstrating her objection to christening.
