TransXpress SMA1K briefly

SMA1K is a synchronous multiplexerthat offers an ultra compact solution foradd/drop or terminal applications inSDH networks. In addition, it satisfiesthe actual demand for broad-/narrow-band or packed-oriented time-criticalservices thus enabling the operator toquickly establish new revenue generat-ing services. SMA1K can thus reducecosts and guarantee a maximum offlexibility in network planning.

Due to the high level of integration, thefull multiplexer functionality is placedon a single card. Only one board isneeded to make the SMA1K work asan unprotected terminal multiplexer. Bysimply adding one card, the SMA1Kbecomes a fully protected add/dropmultiplexer. Sub-modules (daughterboards) can be fitted onto the maincards to allow easy extension of thetributary capacity up to 63x2 Mbit/s.

The SMA1K supports STM-1 aggregateline rate and is capable of drop/insert-ing 2Mbit/s, 34Mbit/s or 45Mbit/s, oreven 10/100 BaseT signals. The Ether-net interfaces allow the operator toeasily and cost-efficiently connectpacket-based data networks (e.g., IPnetworks) without having to deployadditional expensive third-party equip-ment such as switches or routers.

The SMA1K covers all basic core net-work applications and it is the perfectequipment for edge and corporate net-work applications due to its compact-ness and flexibility. The compact subrack design can bemounted in standard ETSI or 19" racks,as well as at customer premises, forexample, or in street-cabinets. Alsolocal exchanges can be managed with-out expenditure.

Top 10 features

SMA1K is a well-thought-out product, which is especially known for its versa-tility. It can be used as terminal oradd/drop multiplexer supporting multi-ple topologies, for instance ring, meshed and star configurations. Inaddition, all the following features areoffered in a very small physical design:

Ethernet-based networks

SMA1K adds packet-switched data inter-faces to it's well-proven, reliable and flexi-ble SDH platform. The Ethernet interfaceallows the operator to easily and costeffectivly connect packet-based data net-works (e.g., IP networks) without deploy-ing additional expensive third-party equip-ment (e.g., switches or routers).

Geographically distributed LANs can beinterconnected inexpensively using sim-ple bridges. These bridges can be con-nected in pairs through point-to-point linkswhich are transparent for higher levelprotocols. In addition, bridges are easy toinstall (plug and play) and do not requirecomplex installation and managementroutines.SMA1K provides a highly cost-effectiveway of delivering leased line services tointerconnect LAN networks, as well asother corporate services, with additionalbenefits like SDH management and pro-tection facilities.

Versatile DeploymentVersatile DeploymentExtending the Boundaries of Your Network

Thanks to it's versatility, the SMA1K

represents a real multi-service network

element supporting a great variety of

network applications and configura-

tions. For instance, it can be deployed

as a terminal multiplexer or as an

add/drop multiplexer in point-to-point,

chains, ring or meshed topologies.

The compact housing makes SMA1Kthe ideal choice for deployment eitherat customers' premises or in cabinets.

Network Control over large distances

To maintain low investment costs inlow density areas, for example in ruralareas, remote switching solutions canbe deployed. Groups of subscribers atlarger distances from the central officeswitch are connected via remote digi-tal line units installed in shelters.

These remote shelters (RS-DLU) canserve several hundred distant sub-scribers and can be interconnected tothe central switching network node(e.g. Siemens EWSD) through an STM-1 link provided by the SMA1K.

In a cellular environment as well, dis-tributed base station controllers (BSC)can be interconnected to the mobileswitching center (MSC) through a cost-effective SMA1K link.

These solutions cope with size andcost requirements while satisfying thecontinually increasing traffic volume.SMA1K is optimally designed as asolution where compactness, flexibilityand rapid installation are mandatoryattributes.

Network termination and access tocore networks

SMA1K is fully compatible with otherTransXpress products and can bedeployed as an access solution inpoint-to-point and ring configurations.

In addition to traditional access to corenetworks, SMA1K can be deployed asa network termination node to create aclear definition of each operator’s/cus-tomer’s responsibility. In the event ofnetwork fault, extensive performancemonitoring functionality, e.g., tandemconnection monitoring, ensure theexact QoS measurement and rapididentification of the section or sub-net-work in which the error occurred.TheSMA1K is also available in a specialmechanical arrangement for desktopand wall-mount installation in customerpremises as SMA1K-CP (dedicatedinformation available).
