The cell membrane moves substances into and out of the cell in a variety of ways.  

In passive transport, the cell does not use energy to move substances into and out of the cell.  

In active transport, the cell is required to use energy to moves substances into and out of the cell.

Concentration is the amount of a particular substance in a given volume.

As we know, charged particles cannot diffuse directly through the cell membrane.  

These particles require the help of a transport protein to cross the cell membrane.  This is facilitated diffusion.
