Transnet Port Terminals
Overview
• Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is one of Transnet’s various operating divisions
• TPT operates thirteen terminals countrywide, from Richards Bay on the east coast through to Saldanha Bay on the west coast.
• Terminals are “leased” from our “landlord”, Transnet National Ports Authority, in terms of the National Ports Act
• Each terminal imports, exports and stores cargo and cargo handled includes:
• New and used vehicles
• Bulk cargo
• Breakbulk cargo
• Containerized cargo
• Staff complement of over 7000 employees and TPT handles appx. 90% of all imports
and exports in SA.
• SABS interaction primarily with SHEQ teams (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) in terms of OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 systems
Scope of Terminal Operations
TPT terminal footprints are usually divided into the following areas:
• Stacking or storage areas • Paved restricted container, multipurpose and automobile stacking areas, adjacent to
quayside.• Open concrete slabs or bins utilized for bulk mineral cargoes, • Warehouses and silos utilized for agricultural product storage.
• Quayside area is where loading of cargo from land to vessel (and vice versa) takes place.• Use of ship-to-shore cranes in container terminals• Shiploaders / unloaders used to load and discharge mineral and agricultural bulk cargoes• Mobile harbour cranes utilized for a variety of purposes, mainly in the multipurpose cargo
trade. • Stevedores utilized to move automobiles to and from vessels (car carriers)
• Workshops / washbays• Service all terminal mobile equipment and various infrastructure• Clean vehicles
• Planning / operations centres / admin. buildings / SHEQ• Offices used to provide support to terminal operations• Planning and ops centres are “nerve centres” of the terminal operations.
• Terminal boundary• Terminals fenced off from public and other areas by security fencing, in line with ISPS
requirements (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code). Strict security requirements exist to prevent access to ports by unauthorized persons.
