The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UT CPPS) offers two degree programs for incoming transfer students.

Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical ScienceSThe Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) degree is a four-year baccalaureate program. This program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers related to the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical science and research, pharmaceutical administration and sales, the biomedical industry, forensic science, cosmetic and personal care products industry, and health care administration. It also prepares students to enter medical school, law school, or graduate studies.

There are five majors under the BSPS degree program:

• Medicinal and Biological Chemistry • Pharmaceutics • Pharmacology/Toxicology • Pharmacy Administration • Cosmetic Science

Doctor of Pharmacy The six-year, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program prepares and qualifies graduates for state board licensure to practice pharmacy. The PharmD program includes professional practice development coursework and specialized experiential rotations to prepare students for practice.

acaDemic creDit for PreviouS courSe WorkThe University of Toledo only accepts transfer students into the first or second year of the pre-professional division. Transfer students will be considered second-year students if they have a full year of the appropriate general chemistry and biology with all labs. Our own faculty evaluates courses for equivalencies. Students will need to submit syllabi for evaluation if requested. Currently, this is the same process for students with baccalaureate or post-graduate degrees.

One year toward the length of the program is the most credit that can be expected, and only if the proper courses have been taken.

All transfer students can expect to be at UT for a minimum of three years for the BSPS degree and five years for the PharmD degree if credit is given for the first year.

unDergraDuateS With DegreeS (uWD)Effective for the fall 2012 Professional Division admission cycle, a select and highly qualified group of up to five Undergraduates With Degree (UWDs), as defined below, may be offered admission directly into the Professional Division of the PharmD Program at The University of Toledo. A larger number may be admitted on a space available basis after all qualified internal candidates have been admitted.

To be considered for admission to this program, UWD applicants should meet the following minimum criteria:

• Applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited United States baccalaureate degree granting institution prior to application to the CPPS.

• The undergraduate cumulative GPA from that institution must be a 3.50 or above.

• Applicant must have completed all the prerequisite courses or equivalents, with a grade of “B” or better, as determined by appropriate University of Toledo evaluating departments.

• Applicant must have completed two semesters of physiology or anatomy at the 200(0) level or higher (equivalent to courses required by biology majors) as approved by The University of Toledo CPPS Department of Pharmacology.

• All necessary course work must have been completed within the last seven years.

aPPlying to the ProfeSSional DiviSionTransfer students with strong cumulative and science GPAs must be enrolled in the UT CPPS and take a minimum of 16 graded semester hours before being eligible to be considered for admission to the professional division. Functional Anatomy and Pathophysiology I (PHCL 2600) is only offered in the fall semester and must be taken at UT before being eligible to apply to the professional division. Both Functional Anatomy and Pathophysiology I and II (PHCL 2600 and 2620) must be taken at UT before entry into the professional division.

BSPS ProfeSSional DiviSion aDmiSSionThe college considers two criteria for students applying to the BSPS professional division. The college currently accepts up to 115 students in the BSPS program each year.

cumulative gPaStudents must have completed a minimum of 16 graded hours at UT to be eligible to apply to the professional division. For students who have completed fewer than 30 graded hours at UT, their higher education GPA or their UT GPA will be evaluated as the cumulative GPA, whichever is lower. For transfer students who have taken 30 graded hours at UT before applying to the professional division, the UT GPA will be considered as the cumulative GPA.

Science gPaScience GPA is calculated from grades in the two general chemistry lecture courses, the first organic chemistry lecture course, the two biology lecture courses, the first calculus course, the first physics course and the first functional anatomy and pathophysiology course. Students may take a maximum of two attempts at the science courses, and the better of the two grades will be used in calculating the science GPA. The grades are not averaged together.

PharmD ProfeSSional DiviSion aDmiSSionThe college considers four criteria for students applying to the PharmD professional division. The college currently accepts up to 108 students in the PharmD program each year.

PcatThe Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) will be required for Fall 2014 admission to the PharmD professional division.

essayStudents write an essay in January of the spring semester of the year they wish to enter the professional division.

cumulative gPaStudents must have completed a minimum of 16 graded hours at UT to be eligible to apply to the professional division. For students who have completed fewer than 30 graded hours at UT, their higher education GPA or their UT GPA will be evaluated as the cumulative GPA, whichever is lower. For transfer students who have completed 30 graded hours at UT before applying to the professional division, UT GPA will be considered as the cumulative GPA.

Pcat guiDelineS effective for fall 2014 aDmiSSion to the PharmD ProfeSSional DiviSionThere will be no minimum PCAT score required for students applying for admission in Fall 2014.

The most recent PCAT score (composite score and writing score) earned by a student will be used for admissions purposes, regardless of the number of times the student takes the test.

For applicants applying for admission to the Fall 2014 PharmD class, PCAT scores obtained prior to July 2012 will not be considered. This two-year time limit will continue in subsequent years.

It is recommended that students take the PCAT after the PP1 coursework is completed, ideally no earlier than September of the PP2 year. However, July testing prior to the PP2 year is available for those who wish to take it then.

If additional fall test dates are offered, no PCAT score will be accepted from tests taken after December 1 of the year prior to admission.

The cumulative GPA, science GPA, essay score and PCAT composite and writing scores will be used to determine interviewees.

Contingent admission students who are concerned that they will not meet the 3.5 GPA requirements for admissions will be advised to take the PCAT.

Students may wish to consider taking a practice test. There is an online practice test available for a nominal fee from PCAT publishing company, Pearson. For information on the PCAT and practice test, visit the PCAT website at pcatweb.info
