When you walk into your local snowboard shop to buy a new board it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

These days there really are so many brands all screaming at you from the rack. With so many options how can you crack the code?

When shopping for your new deck here are a few things to think about…

First and foremost, think about the kind of riding that you’re likely to do. If you’re the type of rider who loves to bomb groomers then why buy a park board? Similarly, that soft jib board isn’t going to be much use shredding the Extreme Zone at Mt Hotham. The stiffer the board, the more stable and responsive it is at speed. On the contrary, a soft board will enable a more forgiving ride in the park and the softer flex allows better a press.

Second, have a think about the type of board profile that’s going to suit your riding. The board profile is the shape of the board from tip to tail and is either regular camber, reverse camber, or a combination of the two. Regular cambered boards are suited to riders who prioritise edge hold and turn response. The negative energy created by a cambered board through a turn is what gives the board its drive as you exit from one edge to the other. Reverse cambered boards enable the contact points at each end of the board to be lifted off the snow relative to the centre of the base profile. This design enables a ‘catch-free’ ride that suits freestyle riding and beginners. Some brands have other variations on their base profiles. For example, one other brand runs a tapered rise across the base, which lifts your effective edges while still allowing a stable

cambered profile between the nose and tail. Another uses a combination of rocker and camber in the single board. Other brands experiment with asymmetrical or wavy edges for a variety of ride feels. Do some research into these technologies and speak with the staff at your local board store to find out what suits you.

Last but certainly not least you should decide on an appropriate length that is tailored toward your own personal riding style. A very broad rule of thumb is that an all mountain board should sit somewhere between your chin and your nose. This changes when considering things like riding powder or rails. A longer board will give you more f loat when riding deeper snow and usually jib boards are ridden considerably smaller to reduce swing weight when spinning onto features.

BAGS

The international nature of our sport means that travel with heavy gear is unavoidable. Who has ever attempted to cram clothes,

snowboards, boots, outerwear plus everything else you need for an overseas shred trip into a board bag that weighs less than 23 kg? It’s not easy is it? Mark our words; the most important consideration when choosing a bag is weight! Lucky for all you keen shredders there are now a heap of options on the market that have been made specifically with a snowboarder’s needs in mind. Nearly all bags these days are made with wheels, which should be your number 2 priority. When you’re dragging that bag through terminals, trains and between buses you will be thankful you didn’t skimp. Another tip, look for bags that have separated compartments inside them to keep your gear organized. Living out of a bag can be a messy business so it’s good to keep it tight.

You should think of your boots and bindings in the same way as your car’s chassis and suspension. Would you trust a Ferrari with the chassis of a Holden? Similarly, would you drive a Mercedes with the suspension of a Toyota? Coupling your shiny new deck with

a pair of boots and bindings that complement each other will keep your setup running tight, meaning that at the end of the day your snowboarding will be both more efficient and rewarding.

Obviously, the extent to which your boots and bindings perform will depend on how far you can stretch your budget. At the pointy end of the market you are looking at options like flex pattern customization, tool free adjustability, better comfort, lighter weight materials such as carbon and the sat-isfaction of knowing that what you ride is no different from the pro athletes on the pages of this very magazine. Each year the brands tend to filter down this technology through their range, meaning that even if you can’t quite stretch to that top end boot, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re riding the best gear possible.

When choosing your new setup, here are a couple of key considerations to make:

How many days will you ride? The better gear on the market tends to be quite specific to those that expect the best in durability and performance. If you’re the type of snow-

boarder that pushes 50-80 days per year, invest a little more money and you will find you need to replace your gear a lot less often.

What kind of riding do you want to do? A park specific boot or binding will be quite soft, enabling the rider to enjoy slightly more freedom of movement when executing complicated maneuvers. While a freeride boot will be stiffer enabling better support and superior performance due to the stress-ors of riding fast and hard.

Does lacing matter? There are so many options for tensioning systems on the market these days. Have a try of mechani-cal systems like BOA™ and Speedzone™. All of these options have their advantages and disadvantages so the best bet is to sit down in store and try on as many different boots as you can to find out what works for you. Convenience is key but sometimes regular laces can offer more street cred.

Fit – don’t get it wrong: Straight out of the box, a pair of boots should feel like a pair of shoes that are just too small. The perfect fit should involve feet flat on the footbed, a secure hold around your heel and your toes should be just touching the end of the boot without any pressure. Boots these days gen-erally have a thermo mouldable liner so keep in mind that your boot liner will gradually change and mean that after the first few days you will end up with a perfect custom fit.

All these things aside, the most impor-tant factor when choosing your boots and bindings is to make sure that they integrate. Some brands these days use mounting systems that are unique to their boards so be sure to buy from a trustworthy source. Some boots will be constructed in such a way as to work better with certain designs of bindings; ask your local shop to guide you and you will never go astray.

You should put your boots somewhere warm every night to dry out. If you don’t, you’re feet will be cold and wet the next day. If that happens, try warming them up in your gloves like Paul Edwards. Photo Vaughan Brookfield

Backcountry travel can be a fickle beast. Inclement weather, variations in the snowpack, navigation and the need to

overcome the forces of gravity are all factors that must be managed when attempting to travel beyond the boundary. Thanks to extensive development in splitboard technology, at least the last problem has become a thing of the past.

Until recently, snowboarder’s backcountry travel options ended at snowshoes or a bootpack. Thanks to many snowboard manufacturers recognising the increasing demand for splitboards, we now have a huge array of choice.

A splitboard is a regular snowboard that can be separated into two skis enabling the rider to travel in the same way as a backcountry-touring ski. Splitboards are available in two flavours, DIY splits and factory manufactured. One slight caveat, splitting a board yourself is no simple task so unless your confident in your backyard engineering skills it may be best left to the experts. Factory splitboards are made with an edge insert on your inside edge, whereas

most people who split their own boards will end up with a urethane seal over the wood core. This means that on icy ascents in ski mode, factory boards with an edge insert will be able to hold an edge more effectively.

Choosing a splitboard is much like choosing a regular board, only there are a few more things to consider.

SHAPEAs splits are targeted at freeriding they are generally manufactured with pow riding in mind. Most shapes will be directional, with a set back stance to allow for better float in deeper snow. Some manufacturers also produce powder specific designs with a long nose and an unconventional tail design.

HARDWAREIf you decide to split your board yourself, you will need to purchase a split kit, these kits include all the extra mounting hardware you will need, if you are purchasing a factory split make sure you enquire which system the board uses to mount bindings.

BINDINGSSplit board specific binding systems are available for the perfect set up. It is possible to use regular snowboard bindings with mounting plates, however this means that the binding is raised off the deck of the board. This will tend to decrease board feel, modify edge to edge response and add weight.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENTDon’t forget that in order to get out back you will need to invest in extra equipment on top of the board. This will include climbing skins, telescoping poles and the usual backcountry safety equipment.

Splitboarding can open up a whole new world of terrain. It has two big advantages: fresh tracks every run and no lift ticket necessary!

When the stars align and it’s on, you need to know your gear is going to be up to it. So do your research, choose your kit and get out there! Photo Adam Moran

Believe it or not, there was a time when outerwear wasn’t as advanced and accessible as it is today.

Nonetheless, the hardiest souls would endure soggy wet days on the hill to pursue the stoke which was keeping them out there just for the love. These days, we have it pretty easy. Almost all of the outerwear that you see on the shop shelf today is fundamentally more advanced than gear from five years ago. The result of this development in technology is that outerwear has shifted from something that is a bare necessity to a form of self-expression. Look at any photograph of snowboarding beyond three years ago and you are sure to notice right away that it’s from days gone by.

Beyond the visual aspect of snowboard outerwear there remains a little science. A piece of outerwear will always be rated in terms of breathability and water resistance. Generally anything above 5000 mm will keep you dry when it is raining, and Jackets will be rated up to about 20 000mm. This measurement is a method of standardization adopted by the snow industry; it means that a tube placed over the fabric will be able to resist a volume of water up to that depth before it will start to leak. So the higher the rating the more resistant the garment will be, but don’t forget that there are dynamic forces at play in nature and so if you value staying dry it might be worth getting something rated higher. Membrane technology such as GoreTex™ usually offers the best in terms of a balance between breathability and water resistance and as such they are better for more active riding or backcountry travel.

At the end of the day the most important consideration is that you look and feel comfortable in what you are wearing. Don’t forget, it’s your outerwear and not your snowboarding that people see at the bar so make it count!

GOGGLES

Did you know that without the proper protection your eyeballs can get sunburnt? Ain’t nobody got time for that! Make sure you don’t get rejected from the pub for looking like you’ve

been drinking since last Wednesday by using proper eye protection. Goggles are such a personal decision; the best plan of attack when looking for a new pair is to just try as many on as you can. Shop by look, there’s enough variation on the market in terms of fit that you’re sure to find something that fits right and looks the goods. Most manufacturers now offer lenses in either flat or spherical, framed and frameless, so you can decide on what you prefer and go from there. Keep in mind that some will come with interchangeable lenses so you can keep a spare in your Jacket just in case storm clouds roll in as you’re making for base camp.

GLOVESP icture this scenario; it’s mid August, you battled Friday night highway

traffic for 5 hours to get to the hill for that fresh snow you heard about and you made first chair… it’s the stuff of dreams, right? There is only

one thing that would send you running in for a hot chocolate quicker than anything else and that’s cold hands. After throwing down your hard earned cash for new kit, your gloves are the last item you want to overlook.

Good snowboard gloves need to be strong and durable. Binding ratchets and metal edges aren’t particularly kind so make sure you choose something that’s going to stand the test of time. Like any other gear purchase you get what you pay for so look for gloves with reinforced stitching, leather panels and waterproof membranes. With so many stylish options getting around these days make sure you put some thought into insulating your digits this season.

Remember when you were a grommet and you’d try to sneak out without one of those ugly yellow stack hats? You’re parents would never let you get away,

so out you’d go with your big bobble head on. Luckily snowboarding helmets have progressed a lot in the last few years. Snowboarding is a dangerous past time and it makes sense to protect yourself when you’re pushing your limits. Helmets now come in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours so have a read, try one on and protect your best asset – you’ve only got one!

W ith the amount of tech that’s packed inside POV cameras on the market today you could almost film a complete snowboard part with one alone! WiFi remote triggers, 1080p HD, GPS tracking, laser targeting; the

list goes on. As we become more and more addicted to data, camera companies continue to lead the way in innovation and design. POV cameras are now ubiquitous on the hill so don’t get left with nothing to show, pick one up this season. Just one tip, don’t forget to ask your buddy, “is the red light on?”

Accessories are one of life’s simple joys. They are like sauce on a pie or friends on a powder day, little additions that make things all that much better.

Here is a selection of this year’s finest offerings.

The wild and colourful creatures that spill from the mind and paintbrush of artist Jeff Soto are the stuff of dreams. His work blurs the lines between pop surrealism and graffi ti creating an otherworldly aura that is truly unique. As an internationally renowned and respected artist, partnering with Soto to create original art for our Ply series was an incredible opportunity.

Take a look; we think you’ll agree that Jeff Soto killed it for DC Snowboarding.

For more on DC Snowboarding Visit: facebook.com/dcsnowboarding

Snappy, skate-like response and a stable park-tuned fl ex are two of the many attributes that make the Plys. Featuring Lock & Load camber—our most popular and positively poppy boards.
