Boroughbridge

In coaching times, Boroughbridge was animportant staging post on the Great NorthRoad, being half way between London andEdinburgh.

Nowadays, this pretty North Yorkshire townon the banks of the River Ure features anintriguing mix of Regency, Georgian andVictorian architecture, with an elaboratefountain dominating St. James Square.

Among the northernmosturban centres in the RomanEmpire, Aldborough was the'capital' of the RomanisedBrigantes, the largest tribe inBritain.

One corner of the defences is laid out amid a Victorian arboretum,and two mosaic pavements can be viewed in their original positions.

Filey

Filey has a magnificent 5-milestretch of golden sandstretching away from the townto the south.

To the north, Filey Bay isprotected by the ruggedoutcrop of Filey Brigg, a spit

of land jutting out into the sea and one of the Yorkshire Coast’smost enduring features.

Filey is the perfect place for hardy souls who wish to take a briskwalk along the shoreline, yet is just as ideal for those who wantto just sit, relax and recharge their batteries in peacefulsurroundings.

The town centre is small and friendly, ideal for browsing in thesunshine, with many small and unusual shops.

Flamingo Land

At Flamingo Land there’s an action packedday out for all the family.  Whilst the moreadventurous can enjoy some of the mostx-treme coasters and rides in the country,there’s still a great selection of rides forall the family.The zoo is home to over 1,000 animals,including Siberian Tigers, Grants Zebras,Bactrian Camels, Monkeys, Sea Lions,Reptiles, Humboldt Penguins andMeerkets, as well as Giraffes, WhiteRhinoceros and Hippopotamus.

Grassington

Grassington lies within theYorkshire Dales National Parkand retains all its traditionalcharm.

The cobbled square of thispopular Upper Wharfedalevillage has been preserved,

around which can be found a selection of family-owned shopsoffering quality food, clothing and gifts, together with cosy cafésand restaurants.

Haworth

Situated above the Worth Valley amid theatmospheric Pennine hills, the picturesquevillage of Haworth is internationally famousfor its connection with the Brontës, whowrote most of their famous works whileliving at the Haworth Parsonage while theirfather was Parson at Haworth church.

The village has a wonderful selection of giftshops, antiquarian bookshops, traditionaltea rooms, restaurants, pubs and hotels -including the Black Bull, where BranwellBrontë's demise into alcoholism and opium-

addiction allegedly began…

At the top of Main Street is the church where the Reverend PatrickBrontë was the parson and behind this is The Brontë Parsonage;once the home of the Brontë Family, this is now an excellentmuseum the famous literary family.

This homely Georgian house still retainsthe atmosphere of the Brontës’ time. Therooms they once used are filled with theirfurni ture, c lo thes and personalpossessions.

Here you can marvel at the tiny manuscriptbooks which the Brontë children made,admire Charlotte’s wedding bonnet,imaging meeting Emily’s pets from herwonderfully lifelike drawings, and gain aninsight into the place and objects thatinspired their work.

The displays are changed annually so you can always be sure ofseeing something new.

In addition to the main house, there is a permanent exhibitionabout the whole of this remarkable creative family, and in thetemporary exhibition gallery there are changing displays of itemsfrom the Brontë Society collections.

Hebden Bridge

Hebden Bridge was named in2005 as the funkiest place tolive in Europe by BritishAirways’ in-flight magazine,“High Life”, and also featuredin the national media for beingthe best town in Britain forindependent shops.

Taking its name from the packhorse bridge over Hebden Water,Hebden Bridge has seen great change in recent years. It enjoysa national reputation as a liberal, artistic and creative communitywith a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere more associated withlarger towns. Buildings have been stone-cleaned and revitalised,the Rochdale Canal has been extensively restored, and the localityhas become a desirable place to live and visit

Ilkley

Ilkley is an elegant spa townon the southern edge of theYorkshire Dales. It offers greatshopping together with somefantastic places to eat – fromfriendly cafés to a Michelin-starred restaurant!

Why not take a walk on Ilkley Moor, famous as the setting of theYorkshire folk song "On Ilkla Moor Baht'at"; or for the moreadventurous, climb the Cow & Calf Rocks.

Ilkley also has a fascinating Toy Museum, which is open onweekends.

Keighley

Located at the head of the Worth Valley,Keighley is a town with a lot to offer visitors.

For shoppers there is so much to choosefrom -The excellent Airedale Centre bringstogether high street names andindependent shops under one roof, whilstKeighley Market is a colourful and livelyshopping destination with quality food,jewellery and homeware retailers. Thelong terrace of Cavendish Street, with its200M ornamental canopy, is a fine exampleof Victorian commercial architecture.

Other superb examples of architecture are nearby East RiddlesdenHall and Keighley’s Central Library. Recently extensivelyrefurbished, the Library was the first ‘Carnegie Library’ in England,opened in 1904 with a grant of £10,000 from benefactor AndrewCarnegie.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is one of the most visitedtourist attractions in the Keighley area. This excellent restoredsteam railway, famous for its appearance in the film ‘The RailwayChildren’, runs at weekends all year and every day through thesummer between Keighley and Oxenhope.

East Riddlesden Hall

East Riddlesden Hall was home to a familyof local entrepreneurs, and the exquisiteembroideries, plasterwork, pewter andoak breathe life into their stories.

Outside, the wild garden is host to armiesof daffodils in spring, whilst the scents ofthe formal garden flourish in high summeramidst the blackened ruin of the StarkieWing.

The whole family can choose to roam thegrass maze, clamber around the play area

or just laze around the ground feeding the ducks.

Barley Hall is a stunningmedieval townhouse. Until the1980s the house was hiddenunder the façade of a derelictoffice block.  Only when thebuilding was going to bedestroyed was the amazingmedieval building discovered.

The building has now been restored to its original splendour withstunning ceilings, beautiful exposed timber, and possibly the onlyhorn window in England.  Decorated to replicate the Snawsell homearound 1483, it boasts a magnificent Great Hall.  Visitors can makethemselves at home and sit on the chairs and handle the objectsand experience what life may have been like in Medieval England…

Clifford’s Tower was once thestronghold of York Castle, butit has much older and moreturbulent origins.  WhenWilliam the Conqueror seizedthe throne in 1066, he waseager to subdue the North, sohe used York Castle to

establish a dominant military force in the North of England.

Clifford’s Tower has also been the site of many horrific incidentsthroughout history, not least in 1190 when the City’s Jewishcommunity took shelter when faced with an angry mob.  Many tooktheir own lives rather than be murdered…

Today, visitors can enjoy the best historic views of the City from thetower’s battlements.
