Moving towards a circular economy
The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme(FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 289603
Since the industrial revolution, waste has constantly grown. This is because oureconomies have used a “take-make-consume and dispose” pattern of growth- a linear model which assumes that resources are abundant, available and cheapto dispose of.
What we need is a more circular economy.
This means re-using, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materialsand products. What used to be regarded as ‘waste’ can beturned into a resource. The aim is to look beyond wasteand to close the loop of the circular economy. All resources need to be managed more efficientlythroughout their life cycle.
(European Commission, 2015)

Why – circular economy ?

IEA (2014) Key World Energy Statistics
The annual rate of reduction of carbon emissions per unit of GDP needed to limitglobal warming to 2oC, has passed a critical threshold according to new analysis fromPwC. … It demonstrates that at current rates of emissions growth at least 6oCdegrees of warming could be possible by the end of the century. (PwC, 2012)
Global non-linear effect of temperature on economic production (Burke et al, 2015)

OBJECTIVE
The main aim of TRANSBIO is the implementation of aninnovative cascading concept for the valorisation of sub-products from the fruit and vegetable processingindustry using environmentally friendly biotechnologicalsolutions like fermentation and enzyme-conversionstrategies to obtain valuable bioproducts like plastics (PHB),nutraceuticals / platform chemical succinic acid andenzymes for detergent applications.
