The Founder
Eric Berne (1910-1970) MD 1935 Army stint- 1943-46▪ Possibility of group therapy
Worked with Erik Erikson 1956- Applied and rejected by
Psychoanalytic Institute 1957- Published first paper on TA
TA was born when I listened to my clients and not my teachers
What is Transactional Analysis
When two people interact with each other , they are doing a social transaction
TA is the analysis of these transactions
Post Freudian as it does not looks at individual in isolation but transactions between them
Ego states- PAC Model
Parent (extero-psychic) Adult (neopsychic) Child (archaeopsychic Later on Parent and child
stages have been subdivided into two subgroups
Parent Nurturing or Controling
Child Free or Adaptive

Crossed Transactions

Rules of communication
A complementary transaction has a quality of expectedness about it
When a transaction is crossed, chances are that the person receiving the cross will shift into the ego-state that the crosser has invited
The behavioral outcome of an ulterior transaction is determined at the psychological and not at the social level
Types of Transactions

Ain’t it Awful
He person just want to show their problem, not to solve them.
See what you have made me Do
Do a wrong thing in the presence of other and then blame the mistake on the other person
If it weren’t for You
I would have been great if not because of You
May be even company policy, the environment
Let’s You and Him Fight
Involves three people Let two person fight
Blemish
Just find one mistake even if it is trivial
Now I’ve got You, You S.O.B.
Costs the organization a lot Instead of being preventive, just
want to give the person a chance and then catch him/her
