Teach your children well
From the principal Hi everyone – what a year !
Business as Usual
Exams have finished and we are writing reports, but we have certainly NOT finished working. All the teachers will be
teaching right until the end of the year. Every moment is precious and we will not miss a single minute. I have noticed
that some students are beginning to miss school and they need to realise that they are missing valuable learning time,
with skills and content being taught in preparation for next year.
I teach Year 10 Mathematics for example, and I intend to revise Trigonometry for the next couple of weeks and end
the year with a bang with compound interest! I love Trigonometry, as I am sure everyone does!
We get a very good holiday break and so don’t waste the rest of the term – make the most of it.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
If you are thinking about presents for Christmas, why not buy your child a laptop, especially if he/she is going into
senior school. We do have some laptops to share but it is so much better for them to have their own. If you think you
have found a device that looks promising, why not visit your friendly Technology Support team here at school free of
charge and get some advice about the best machine to buy.
Tell Them From Me Surveys
The students completed these surveys again at the end of last term and once again the results were very pleasing. The
data from these surveys is used to evaluate the success of the strategies outlined on our School Plan. We believe that
students who have a good relationship with their teachers and have a wide and varied range of opportunities to succeed
will be happier at school and will have the confidence to take risks and achieve at whatever they do. The graphs below
are a strong indication of how great our little school is.

The surveys, done on line and anonymously give the students a voice about how they feel about their school. We need
to know student opinion because student voice is essential if we are to build on what we have achieved and continue
to grow.
We take from the surveys the knowledge that we have a happy school with engaged and confident students. We also
take on board that there is work to be done with Year 7, who come from a variety of feeder schools and who will take
a little while to settle in to the culture of our school. This culture is very strong and well defined and is built on mutual
respect and trust and sometimes it takes a little while for the newcomers to assimilate. BUT, assimilate they do and by
Year 9 and upwards they have well and truly taken on our values and expectations. I was only having a conversation
with a Year 9 boy the other day – Do you remember what you were like in Year 7 and 8 …..? It is funny now!
I see the success stories that make me know why we do this job. Maybe we think of one student who shall remain
nameless who left in Year 8, tried other places and then came back home and has turned himself around. I have never
seen such an improvement – so well done. You know who you are!
Finally ........
My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing
something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single
day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us – to our face. FaceBook is the coward’s way out!
All the best

The Amazing Race - SRC
Mrs Rush and the SRC will be running ‘The
Amazing Race’ next Thursday 24th
November for all Secondary students. The
students will be organised into mixed teams
from a range of years. These teams will
participate in many interesting and fun
challenges throughout the day (from 11.30am
-3.00pm) that are designed to promote
teamwork and develop an awareness of other
countries and cultures throughout the world.
This is also a fund raising activity for the
SRC and a gold coin donation is appreciated.
The students are encouraged to wear suitable
clothes that link to the theme of the day.
REMINDER: Years 9-11 Urban Challenge Excursion
Arrangements are being finalised for the excursion to Sydney for the Years 9,10 & 11 students in Week 9. I would
like to remind all parents and carers to please make any final payments towards the cost of this excursion to the school
office.
University of Newcastle Visit
Some of our Year 9 girls will be travelling to Newcastle to spend a week at the university where they will be
participating in a program designed to develop an awareness of university life and encourage them to consider
attending Newcastle University after the completion of their HSC.
Years 7-10 Cyber Safety
Unfortunately, the Cyber Safety program planned for last Monday had to be postponed as the police were called to a
major incident in the local area. Arrangements have been made to reschedule this program for tomorrow. Our thoughts
and sympathies are extended to the family and friends of the pilot and others affected by the tragic accident.

Victor Chang Awards
Congratulations to Malcolm Hanley for receiving the prestigious Victor Chang Science Award on Wednesday 16th
November. Mal attended this prestigious award ceremony at Dubbo Senior Campus, together with other students from
schools in the Central West. He received a gold-embossed certificate and has been invited to attend an open day at the
Victor Chang Institute for Cardiac Research in December.
The ceremony was very formal, with a number of important speakers including Professor Jamie Vandenberg (Deputy
Director, Head of Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory) who gave an inspiring speech. Professor Vanderberg
acknowledged the efforts of our students, as well as the valuable contributions both parents and Science teachers make
in supporting our students to achieve to their potential. He also made the point that MOST of the Australian Nobel
prize winners have come from regional Australia. He stated that our regional students grow up with the qualities,
values and motivation that help make them successful, more so than their city counterparts.
The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute established the awards
more than a decade ago, to foster and encourage an interest in Science
and a career in Science. It was Victor Chang’s enquiring mind and
enormous talent that led to his pioneering work in the field of heart
transplantation. These awards are a timely reminder that Science is
vitally important to our nation, in terms of both health and economic
prosperity.

Year 12 Biology - Maintaining a Balance
This week our Year 12 Biology WAP students visited the Education Centre at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
As part of their Maintaining a Balance course module, they had a hands-on experience as they learned about the
adaptations that have evolved to enable some of our most unique animals to survive in Australia’s harsh and varied
environments.
First we met a skin-breathing frog with a cataract, then a corn snake, a shingleback lizard and a blue-tongue lizard. The
Education Centre teacher, Ashley, gave everyone some fantastic facts about these animals, including that the
shingleback is one of the only lizards NOT to lay eggs, but to give birth to live young! We learned that snakes do not
urinate- they excrete a white solid waste called uric acid (so do birds and insects). We also discovered that male
bearded dragons have to be VERY careful when finding a mate - the results could be catastrophic if they get their
timing wrong!
After the information session, we then took off and looked at the other
zoo animals in a whole new way. Every animal has adapted to its
environment over many millions of years and we discussed some of the
features they have and the challenges they face in the wild. For example,
giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks as you do, but
they must move their front legs wide apart in order to reach water on the
ground. Crocodiles open their mouths wide (gaping) to cool their bodies
and kangaroos lick their forearms, where they have extensive networks
of blood vessels in their arms to help keep them cool. We watched the
otters being fed one of their six meals a day and saw how streamlined
and capable they are at finding food in murky water using their sense of
smell.
It was a great day to visit the zoo! Our students are so lucky to have this
amazing resource so close!

Grandparent’s Day
We had a lovely day last Friday, with a record number
of honoured guests coming along to celebrate the
special relationship between grandparents and their
grandchildren. Remy and Mia Gleeson were so very excited that
their Gran was a surprise visitor and actually, we had a number of
grandparents who’d travelled a great distance to share some time in
school with the children. Vincent and Jack Coventry’s nan and pop
had travelled over 4 ½ hours to attend!
The students were all so excited to show their school work and
their classrooms…. We hope that the grandparents enjoyed the
morning and will be keen to return next year.
Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more lovely photos!

Jacky Murtagh PRIMARY Academic Success
At TCS the staff work diligently to provide interesting, educational opportunities each day.
As the whole community knows, we excel in the arts and sporting fields. Alongside these
creative endeavours we also offer a thorough and
comprehensive academic program. Each week children work
on spelling, grammar, writing, reading, mathematics, history,
geography and science. Many children excel in these areas
and we have begun to publicly celebrate these successes on
our Facebook page. At TCS we always try to meet the needs
of the individual by modifying our programs; providing
support for children who are struggling in a particular area as well as offering
extension for our gifted and talented students.
Year 5/6 Canberra Excursion
Students are having the time of their lives in Canberra. The accommodation is fantastic and so far the students have
visited some great sites in our Nation’s Capital including Questacon, the National Dinosaur Museum, Government
House, The Royal Australian Mint and the National Museum. Stay tuned next week for some student reports and
more photos.
School Food Reminder As the weather heats up it is important to stay hydrated. Please pack lots of fresh fruit and vegetables for your children as well as a drink bottle with water. Jacky Murtagh Assistant Principal
