She inspired us all and shared a comprehen- sive look at the current and fu- ture plans for our university. We hosted extremely popular Admitted-Student receptions at the lovely homes of two of our members, Jane Bensussen and Marcia Kreditor. Our Recruit- ment Chair, Shannon Tarnutzer and her two co-chairs, Sally Doll and Jean Krieger enabled every- one attending to enjoy delightful events. Lisa Broderick planned a unique Spring Party event for us at the El Segundo Automobile Driving Mu- seum. We enjoyed a delicious lunch, toured the beautiful mu- seum of pristine antique automo- biles and were even chauffeured around the city of El Segundo in these classic cars. Our very own football great, Anthony Davis ’75, shared his memories of playing on the gridiron at the Coliseum and in the pro’s, his philosophy of a successful life, and the work he is doing to improve the well being of athletes. He graciously signed photographs and posed for pic- tures. He referred to Bird’s description that, “Yes, USC sports ‘fought like Tro- jans’”, but Starr argues that the meaning goes much deeper. Starr confirmed that when the great poet and historian, Vergil, retells the saga of the fall of Troy by the de- vice of the Trojan Horse, he also affirms that it is the spirit of Troy that ultimately regenerates into the majesty of Rome. Thus, the link of Starr’s parallel comparison: USC may have struggled valiantly as a young school and with inexperi- enced teams, but it, too, overcame and became the glory of today. Dr. Starr reminded us that our early presidents, as today’s lead- ership, pursue learning and re- search. We reach for higher val- ues in education with pride but no boasting. We must overtake our failures and rebuild with hu- mility, never forgetting the past, taking nothing for granted and stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before us. We should honor the past, cherish the present and rejoice in the future. Dear Friends,

On February 24, 1912, USC Ath-

letic Director Warren Bovard

turned to then Los Angeles Times

sportswriter Owen R. Bird, asking

him to coin a nickname for our

athletic teams. Bird deciding on

‘Trojans’, provided this explanation:

“Owing to the terrific handicaps,

under which the athletes, coaches

and managers of the university

were laboring at this time—

appreciating their splendid fighting

spirit and ability of the teams to go

down under overwhelming odds of

bigger and better equipped

teams—it seemed to me that the

name ‘Trojan’ fitted their case.”

Widely read Los Angeles Times

Sports columnist Bill Plaschke, re-

told this story earlier this year on

the 100th anniversary of that mo-

mentous conversation, adding, “It

was one word that eventually de-

fined an institution, created a cul-

ture and fostered an attitude that

has endured for a century.”

During a presentation at a Trojan

Guild of Los Angeles general meet-

ing, Kevin Starr, PhD, noted USC

Professor of History and California

State Historian Emeritus, enlight-

ened us on the general topic of

naming and ultimately the branding

of colleges and universities. He

referred to Bird’s description that,

“Yes, USC sports ‘fought like Tro-

jans’”, but Starr argues that the

meaning goes much deeper. Starr

confirmed that when the great poet

and historian, Vergil, retells the

saga of the fall of Troy by the de-

vice of the Trojan Horse, he also

affirms that it is the spirit of Troy

that ultimately regenerates into the

majesty of Rome. Thus, the link of

Starr’s parallel comparison: USC

may have struggled valiantly as a

young school and with inexperi-

enced teams, but it, too, overcame

and became the glory of today.

Dr. Starr reminded us that our

early presidents, as today’s lead-

ership, pursue learning and re-

search. We reach for higher val-

ues in education with pride but

no boasting. We must overtake

our failures and rebuild with hu-

mility, never forgetting the past, taking nothing for granted and

stand on the shoulders of the

giants who came before us. We

should honor the past, cherish

the present and rejoice in the

future. It is so fitting that our

motto is “Fight On!” Our pas-

sion is to preserve what is the

best, reform to the better and

become the most that we can be.

What an amazing spring it has

been in TLLA! What an amazing

two years it has been in TLLA! I

have been so privileged and hon-

ored to serve as president of

such an acclaimed and devoted

group of women that comprise

our beloved Trojan League of Los

Angeles. Thank you, thank you.

Our magical day of “Milestones in

Medicine” was informative, enter-

taining and fun. Our chairs, Fran

Ciulla and Marcia Kreditor, along

with their hard-working commit-

tee, created an unbelievable event

on the Keck School of Medicine

campus. The School itself was

extremely generous with the

time, talent and enthusiasm of its

administration, faculty and re-

sources to make the day signifi-

cant and elegant. It was beautiful

and bountiful. We are able to

donate to all of our philanthropic

projects including the Keck

School, scholarships, and various

sponsorships, amongst others.

Kudos to the planners, partici-

“MILESTONES IN MEDICINE”

BENEFIT 2012 A HUGE SUCCESS! On Saturday, March 24th, Trojan League of Los Angeles held our annual benefit spotlighting the Keck School

of Medicine. The day included a series of lectures by esteemed Keck School professors and an opportunity to bid on an exciting array of auction items. The day was capped-off with a delicious luncheon featuring keynote

speaker Jonathan M. Samet, M.D., M.S. Chair, Department of Preventive Medicine, Keck School of Medicine and Director, USC Institute for Global Health. The benefit grossed over

$101,000 and raised over $55,000 for TLLA!

KECK KORNER

Dues notices for 2012-2013 will be mailed soon. Membership fees are due July 1st and are considered late after Au-

gust 1st, subject to a $20 late fee.

After much consideration, the TLLA board and general membership approved a new fee for membership in May. The

rising costs of meals and doing business in general was sited as the reason as well as the fact that dues hadn't

been raised in 12 years. Please respond promptly so that the 2012/2013 year starts off strong.

Thank you,

Charlene Ebright, TLLA Treasurer

2011/2012.

TLLA News

Patty Harwood is happy to say that her son, Tom, got engaged in January to Kat Lee and

daughter, Karin, just got engaged in June to Billy Strickland. The Harwoods will be in wedding mode

next year.

Charlene Ebright became a brand new grandmother

with the arrival of Audrey Gibson Uhlenkamp in November. Little Audrey is a 3rd generation

Scion. Proud parents are Erin Ebright Uhlenkamp ('00) and Mike Uhlenkamp ('97).

Fran and Phil Ciulla had a wonderful time in Ireland

with their sons. Just what a "post-benefit" gal needed! Now, she's enjoying her time on Cape Cod with the family. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the sun

will be out and shining...finally!

Kathleen Campos passed the Certified Financial Planner exam and will be receiving her CFP

designation. The designation is a professional

certification mark for financial planners conferred by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. This was on her bucket list so she is quite happy!

Francine and Vito Cafarchia will be cruising the

Mediterranean this summer with their sons, Michael (’10) and Anthony. They’ll be visiting ports in Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. The trip winds down with

a few days in Venice to take in the wonder of the

city, enjoy a gondola ride and visit with family.

Lisa Broderick

There is a special lady who runs TLLA…

She’s devoted to SC and gives her time each day.

She leads with grace, a happy heart, always striving for the best.

Giving so much of herself, she never seems to rest.

She listens to your ideas and important things you say;

The wisdom of her years helps you to find your way.

To my son, you’re “Betty White”, to us, a funny gal.

Your repartee just makes us laugh---you’re our own precious pal.

How lucky Trojan League has been to have you there, my friend.

But as we know, that famous quote: “All good things come to end.”

This medallion in my hand, a special gift for you.

A graceful leader, loving mom and friend to all, it’s true.

Thanks Marilyn! In honor of Marilyn by Fran Ciulla
