Operating fromnumerous locations across the UK and Europe, APS is building a strong presencethrough the development of on-site services, account management and fully-equipped creative studios.APS is committed to the identification and application of emerging manufacturingtechnologies and processes, in order to add value to its clients and maintaining itsenvironmental responsibilities.ChallengesAs part of its commitment to responsible business, APS is embarking on a LEANManufacturing journey and sought a solution to measure and improve the efficiencyof its existing manufacturing equipment .Goals Effectively managing the LEAN Manufacturing program . Establishing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) as the key productivityimprovement metric for the printing presses. Measuring and managing productivity in real-time. Establish accurate, real-time reporting in order to drive continuous improvementefforts forward, and to have maximum impact on the business. 3. TrakSYS Solution Approach Cimlogic conducted a trial using Parsecs mobile productivity solution LEANTrak, to demonstrate the capability of the TrakSYS operations and performance management software. The system was set up and recording data in under 4 hours, providing instant meaningful data on a 10-color printing press. Following the trial, Cimlogic deployed TrakSYS on two ManRoland 10 color printing presses. Operators had the ability to factually measure downtime through using the innovative EVENTTrak (web-based operator interaction nodes). Operators were presented with real-time information on the shop floor, giving them the tools to make an instant impact on production and efficiency. A Lean Manufacturing team was formed as part of a Six Sigma program, which included the development of a new office dedicated to the recording and visual management of performance, creating an instant view of production. KPI reports presenting metrics such as OEE, TEEP and MTBF were instantly accessible to the Lean Manufacturing team, providing the visibility to make good business decisions such as using available machinery time in the best possible way and reducing non-value added steps and waste. Use of built-in capability in TrakSYS to exchange information with various APS business systems to leverage functionality already in place. FIGURE 1 System Architecture 4. ResultsThere were several functional benefits that were realized quickly after deployment ofTrakSYS. Achieved 22% improvement in OEE in first 4 months. Identified the root causes of productivity losses accurately and consistently. Established visual management for operational productivity. Met the established Lean Manufacturing goals. Quality and performance issues can now be interrogated and reviewed againstindividual suppliers of raw materials. Reduced the non chargeable, wasteful activities down to just 8.4%, freeing upadditional production time. Ultimate buy-in from equipment operators in improving efficiencies wasachieved, from top down (the directors office to the shop floor).
