Be aware if someone else gets into your lane...awareness is a great life skill, can even be lifesaving! If you get hit by others in the lane treat it like an accident, not a deliberate act against you. Remember the people you share the lane with are human, don't abuse them because they happen to swim in "your" lane. Welcome a new swimmer, they might become a friend! Above all....keep to the left, pull over for someone faster, and keep smiling. Anonymous Good little tip from Glenda one morning at the pool…. In her bag she carries a tiny bottle of washing up detergent. Rubs it on her googles, rinses and Bingo, they become as clear as new…. ONLY FOR OLD LOVED GOGGLES!!!

Our social committee once again organized a fun luncheon

get- together. Combining a massage treat from our visiting masseuses. Plus an

exercise session led by one enthusiastic lady who still was a fan of the much popular 70’s pop song ‘YMCA’. If we cooperated and

performed this amazing dance routine one was rewarded with an excellent luncheon provided collectively by the guests. Who would

have missed such a fun day? Thank you once again to our social committee.

As you can tell from our photos, a picture tells a thousand words.

Barry took a little persuading but encouraged by our professional gal and the rest of the guests gave in at last.

Sheila Tweedy A family holiday in Tasmania with son John & family was a bonus after swimming in Hobart. There were 95 clubs & 592 competitors swimming over 4 days. As I was the only Q S C I became part of John’s club Q River City. Much to my surprise I won 2 bronze medals- 200 breast & 100 free. John won 5 individual medals & QRC won 2 silver in relays. I was glad I had been to Rockhampton last year & knew what to expect. It was very crowded in Hobart with more swimmers so some days ran very late. Our holiday highlights were Port Arthur, Cradle Mt (8 wombats in wild) Bay of Fires & sea horses at Beauty Point. Family dinner at West Point revolving restaurant for my 75th birthday was very special as I had my 35th there. John remembered what fun it was (he was 7) so his 3 girls loved it! Sheila

Jan Barnes has been out and about. Seen having coffee in the beautiful City of Mackay.

When sisters get together there is a lot of chatting to be done!!!!

One of our competitors, Shirley, scooted away from Brisbane before

receiving her medal earned at River City at Somerville House on 18th

Jan 2015.

THEATRE OUTING

Another enjoyable time was had by

all who attended ‘Wartime Melodies’ at the Wurtulla

Theatre. Many fine voices could be heard

during the sing-a-long.

I have booked in advance (as seats are sold very fast) for the

next production ‘BLITZ’ the musical.

Written by ‘Oliver’ author, Lionel Bart and directed by the CCTC’S

Jennifer Rousset. ‘BLITZ’ the musical captures the

indomitable spirit of Londoners at the height of the London Blitz.

So…did you ever see your parents swim??? I never, ever witnessed my mother in the water. She was, unfortunately, a severe claustrophobic and would not EVER allow water past the base of her neck!! I’m sure my father must have swum many times in his life before I came along to destroy his peaceful existence, but I only saw him in the water once in my ( and his) life time. He chose the tranquil, but quite dangerous, foreshore of Middle Harbour in Sydney to, in a rather inebriated state, demonstrate his aquatic prowess. Fortunately (I think), he left his experiences in verse for the rest of us to enjoy or, at the same time to suffer at. His only witnesses were his host (the Critic) at a Sunday luncheon, the host’s she – goat and, contrary to the implications of his verse, his, by then, very, very wide - eyed, 11 year-old son. The following extract is taken from his book “The Ballad of Bloodthirsty Bessie and Other Poems” By Ronald McCuaig, published in 1961 by Angus and Robinson Ltd. Called “A Visit to a Friend”, the poem is much longer and deals with some other issues. For a first – time swimming observer, however, this is the salient part.

Reader’s story continues……

So that was it!!! Never before and never after, did I see him swim. Just that once – but it was well and truly worth it. If for no other reason than to have heaps to talk about with my mates at school and to ruminate over for some time to come. This also included how he tripped a little later on, fell down and broke his ankle to add to his blood – filled swim memories. All recorded in the poem. Somehow we all made it, eventually, back to the top of the block and were driven home across Sydney in our friends’ car. Though I can still see it all in my now ageing mind, it was not to be the image I would cherish ever after. The Critic’s lovely wife was crazy for gardenia plants. There, on what was a delightful, unspoiled, enticing block of native vegetation, running from hill top to rocky, oyster – ridden, shark – infested Middle Harbour, she propagated and then grew – on, literally hundreds of gardenia plants and made a fragrant heaven out of a majestic, vegetative haven.. Michael
