1. Introduction
AT-SGIRES project proposal and the project’s capacity building plan defined training sessions for the teaching staff members, researchers, students of AT-SGIRES partner universities. For more details about the target group, please read the capacity building plan of AT-SGIRES project.
The training sessions to be conducted at Newcastle University aim at developing the knowledge of trainees in a wide range of topics in recent smart grid development as detailed below. The goal is to give the trainees familiarity with such topics and competence in handling them, in the context of present and future distribution and transmission networks (Smart distribution and transmission grids).
The covered topics covered will be:
Smart Grids: drivers, challenges and regulatory issues
Renewable energy and distributed generation and its effect on the grid
Low carbon loads and their effects on the grid
Smart metering
Demand side response
Electrical energy storage: Grid applications
Active network management and automation
Advanced power flow management
Advanced voltage control in network
Decentralized control and Microgrid
The training sessions will introduce to the researchers and teaching staff members the teaching methods for trainees with industrial backgrounds and how to build a sustainable relationship with the energy industry.
2. Training Sessions’ Goals
The training sessions of AT-SGIRES project to be held at Newcastle University have the following main goals:
Introduce the challenges to be faced by transmission and distribution networks across the globe in the period 2015-2045, and the reasons why traditional solutions are unlikely to be sufficient to meet these challenges.
Teach a wide range of different possible smart grid interventions. Each would be fully described, including a realistic evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. Trainees would be able to perform appropriate calculations of different applications.
Introduce the teaching methods for trainees from energy industry.

3. Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this training sessions, the trainees will be able to:
Describe and evaluate the purposes, costs and benefits of a wide range of smart
interventions on the network;
compare different interventions in the context of particular future challenges on particular
regions of network, and make justified recommendations as to which should be considered
for adoption;
Critically compare such interventions with more traditional solutions such as network
reinforcement.
4. Prerequisites
It is also expected that trainees have Power Engineering as their background or/and have taken the Introduction to Power Systems course and are familiar with its content.
5. Learning Activities
For each topic, formal lectures would be complemented by class discussion;
Problem sheets to work on in groups and separately, in class and afterwards;
Supporting laboratory sessions;
Journal paper review and task-based learning;
Attending keynote of industrial leaders.
6. Capacity building in industry
One of this training aspects is to provide training Sessions for researchers and teaching staff for
capacity building in industry. For this purpose, UNEW will give access to the trainees (teaching staff,
researchers, and students) to the keynote sessions of UK Energy Storage (UKES 2019) conference
and the poster sessions. The conference has an overarching theme of Energy Storage and
Digitalisation. The conference aims to bring together researchers from academia, industry and
policy makers across the whole field of energy storage and relevant themes such as Smart Grids,
offering a unique opportunity for dissemination and collaboration through presentations, expert
talks, and poster sessions to inspire future research.
The speaker of the keynote sessions will give the audience, including the trainees of AT-SGIRES
project, the current and future orientation of the projects funding organization, and their
experience in building successful relationships between the academia and the industry. The poster

sessions will give the trainees an overview about the current research topics in the topics covered
by the conference such as:
Energy Storage and the Internet of Things
Energy Storage and Data
Energy Storage and the Smart Grid
Electrochemical Energy Storage
Energy Storage for Future Mobility
Demonstration & Commercial Deployment of Energy Storage
Energy Storage in Whole Energy Systems
Design, Planning, Integration, and Control of Energy Storage
Energy Storage in the Built Environment
Policy & Economics of Energy Storage
Thermal, Mechanical & Thermochemical Energy Storage
Energy Storage in the Human Context
Global Challenges for Energy Storage
Life Cycle Analysis and Recycling of Energy Storage
Bearing in mind that AT-SGIRES project is not a research project, however the topics covered by the
keynote and the poster sessions can help the teachers and researchers from the beneficiary
universities in better explaining AT-SGIRES modules, by explaining to their future students and
trainees some real-world case studies. In addition, the conference will help the trainees to better
understanding the future needs of industry, hence they can focus more during the teaching of AT-
SGIRES modules on these needs. Finally, understanding the method of approaching the funding
organization and industry will help AT-SGIRES members to build successful relationship between AT-
SGIRES training centre and the industry in the future. This, in its turn, will help in sustaining the
outcomes of AT-SGIRES project.
7. Assessment
The assessment will be through an assignment which would give the opportunity to apply any or all
of the topics covered to a practical case study. The assessment will be through 2 hours examination.
8. Duration of the training
The training will be held in two sessions, during the following period: 02/09/2019 to 13/09/2019
- The training sessions of the teaching staff members will be held during: 02/09/2019 to
06/09/2019.
