Rip Currents (pp. 18–19) 1. This module is not intended to train lifeguards to work in a ___________ environment. 2. Information about rip currents is included so waterfront lifeguards can

______________________ the public. 3. A rip current is a strong ______________________ of water that moves offshore and

beyond breaking waves at a speed that can be in excess of _______ feet per second. 4. Common indicators of a rip current include a channel of ____________________,

_______________________ water; an area of difference water _________________ or a line of ______________________ moving away from shore; or a __________________ in the incoming wave pattern.

5. The USLA estimates that more than ________ people drown in rip currents in the United States each year. Rip currents account for approximately ________% of the rescues performed by surf lifeguards. This makes rip currents one of nature’s most ___________________ natural forces.

6. Many beaches post __________________ to indicate when rip currents and other dangerous conditions are present.

7. If caught in a rip current, do not _________________. Never attempt to _____________ against the current, but rather allow it to take you ________________ from shore. When the current ______________________, swim __________________________ to the beach in the direction of least resistance and then back to shore.

8. What should you do if you are too exhausted to return to shore after being in a rip current?

9. If you are lifeguarding a waterfront where rip currents are a possibility, what training is critical for you to receive?

Cold Water (p. 101) 1. Cold water is defined as less than ________°F (_______°C). 2. Sudden entry into cold water can become a more serious problem when any of

following negative reactions occur: a. A ____________________ ___________________ can cause an involuntary

breath while the victim is underwater. b. ___________________________ induced by cold water may cause the victim to

become unconscious. c. The increased heart rate and blood pressure caused by the sudden cold may

cause a ________________________ _________________. d. If the victim remains in cold water, he or she can develop

________________________________, which can cause unconsciousness. 3. Sometimes drowned victim can be resuscitated after an extended time submerged in

cold water because of the body’s natural reaction that slows __________________ ___________________________ to a standstill (thus minimizing the demand for ______________________) while diverting blood flow to the ___________________ and _____________________ to maintain the functioning of these vital organs.

4. When rescuing a victim in cold water, it is important to remove the ________________________ from the water as soon as possible. Because the cold water can affect you as well, you should attempt the rescue without getting into the _________________________ yourself.

5. If you must enter the water, take a _______________________ ______________ with a _____________________________ and wear ________________ ___________________________, if possible.

6. A victim submerged in cold water may be alive even though he or she has no detectable __________________ ______________ and _________________________, __________________ skin, and __________________________ rigidity.

7. When the victim is out of the water, begin giving ____________________________ or _________________, as needed, and provide first aid for _________________________ as soon as possible. The sooner the victim receives ____________________________ _____________________________ ____________________ the better his or her chance for survival.

Patron Surveillance (pp. 33–51, 74–75, 95–96) Patron surveillance at waterfronts can be challenging due to the facility dimensions, physical structures, and water conditions that affect visibility and extend the distance required to make a rescue.

1. What are common waterfront activities (not from reading)?

2. How should a swimming area be designated at waterfronts where boating, jet skiing, and similar activities are also present (not from reading)?

3. What conditions and structures affect visibility at a waterfront (not from reading)?

7. For a submerged victim or a victim reported missing near the water, a _________________________ may be necessary (pp. 74–75).

8. At some waterfronts, lifeguards may be stationed at the outer edge of the swimming area on a _______________________ __________________ or in a ___________________________________ (p. 48).

9. If stationed in a watercraft in water with a current, you may have to ____________ or _________________________ to maintain position. Some boats have an ____________ _____________ with a quick release or, in larger craft, a second lifeguard maintains ______________________ while the first watches the water.

10. Before being assigned an in-water station, you need specialized ___________________ in the operation of the watercraft used at your waterfront facility.

11. (Extra credit) How would you handle rotation of an in-water station?

5. Strategies for a safe group visit at your facility include _______________________ procedure, safety ______________________________, Classification of participants by ___________________________, designation of __________________________ areas, identification of _______________________ __________________________, and supplemental group strategies, like the _______________ __________________.

6. Which page has instructions for conducting a safety orientation? 7. When conducting a swimming test, list ways to ensure safety.

8. A swim test should include _________________ into the water, _______________-off at the surface of the water, swimming a distance equal to the maximum __________________ of the __________________ _________________, and demonstrating _________________________ control.

9. When guarding at a youth camp with a waterfront, patron load and your area of responsibility may be _________________________ because the participants are usually limited to the ____________________________ and other staff can assist you as ____________________________ (although they cannot _______________________ the lifeguards).

10. The ______________________ _______________________ is a pairing of participants of similar abilities who become responsible for each other.

11. A ________________________ _________________________ is a permanent structure at the entrance of the waterfront with colored tags representing each participant. When participants enter or exit the waterfront, they move their tag to the appropriate side of the board.

12. A _________________________ _______________________ is a method for accounting for all participants in the water.

13. When conducting a buddy check, how do you determine that a pair is not missing?

14. The buddy system, buddy board, and buddy checks are supplemental group strategies; they cannot take the place of ______________________ _______________________.

Emergency Action Plans 1. What communications systems might be used at a waterfront?

2. How can you make sure that communication systems are always ready to go and will be

operated correctly in an emergency?

3. Why should EAPs for waterfronts include additional steps?

4. Who else is in the safety team at a camp or similar waterfront?
