Key functions

New document

When launching Missler Software’s products, a window with thumbnails (on the left side) provides access to the different modules.

For Sheetmetal products (TopSolid’Cut), click the thumbnail .

This window provides access either to:

- the Part document (*.pch); - or the Nest document (*.meg).

New part

The first step consists in importing the contours that define the part shape.

For this operation, click the New part icon.

Note: The Explorer button on the screen allows you to browse for the .Top (2D) design file, which includes the part geometry. This method should be used if the file is not open on the screen. If the .Top file is open, click an element of the part to be imported in the document.

When importing the part in the .Pch document, a transformation can be applied to the imported contour. In this case, for example, a symmetry of the original folder is possible.

Click the Choose transformation button, or otherwise choose No transformation.

TopSolid complex curves (ellipses, B-spline curves, Bézier curves) are automatically simplified into lines and arcs when importing the part. Associativity is kept when modifying complex curves in TopSolid. The curves that define the texts are also imported.

Note: TopSolid allows for use of Windows "True type" fonts, which can be machined, marked… IMPORTANT:

Preparation work for wireframe 3D unbent parts with thickness.

For 3D unbent IGES files with thickness, a specific procedure will be required:

Open the unfolded file (IGES,Top…).

Open a new part document (.pch).

Select the Miscellaneous > Import > Clear 3D wireframe command.

Select an element of the file to clean = the software deletes all Z elements.

Select the bend lines to be deleted.

Validate by pressing the END key.

Use the Curve > Other operations > Sew > Non associative > All curves command.

Finish with Curve > Manage > Rebuild.

Import the geometry in the part document (.Pch) using the icon described above.

For a part created in TopSolid’Fold:

Click the unbending that will be transferred to the part document (.Pch).

Warning: The unbending MUST be in the original XY plane of the drawing. The Project to machine option must be enabled when configuring the unbending. Otherwise, the contour will be deformed (and therefore the dimensions will be invalid).

Precautions to be taken: To ensure that the importation only takes account of the unbending contours, it is recommended that you position the 3D sheet metal part on another level, or that the unbending and the sheet metal part are in two different documents, so that closed contours from the part design are not imported.

General parameters:

Once the part is imported in the part document (.Pch), specify the general parameters via the following dialog box.

Specify the machine, the material and the thickness of the part.

The machine and the material are selected by clicking on their respective names (the element is blue-highlighted). Warning: The thickness value is expressed in tenths of a millimeter, but it can be configured in a different unit of the metric system. When importing from a TopSolid’Fold part, the information about the part’s material and thickness is automatically retrieved. In this case, the thickness field will take the right value and the design material will be selected by default, provided that the software is properly configured (prerequisite: the material must be included in the list of materials of TopSolid’Punch (see paragraph Format management and configuration of TopSolid materials)). During the import stage, you can choose a display color for the selected part. At this stage, it is also possible to choose the degrees of freedom of the part which will influence during nesting. For example, the part rotation or symmetry can be prohibited. Similarly, the part may be provided with a family of degree of freedom, which will be used to calculate the nesting (see Part families).

Note: On an unbending from TopSolid’Fold, the designer can block the rotation and/or symmetry of the part. When importing this part to be machined, some options may already be selected and checked. You can choose whether the drawing importation must include only the closed curves, or also the opened lines or arcs and texts.

Check the corresponding box.

Delete

This function deletes a number of elements related to the cutting technology.

Click the Delete function. The drop-down menu displays the elements to delete.

Select the element to be deleted and validate.

Modify

This function modifies a number of elements related to the cutting technology.

In a part preparation document (.pch), modifications of:

- A limitation point

Enable the Modify function, and then click the limitation point. The following dialog box is displayed.

- The current position of the limitation point and its position expressed in % of the supporting curve length are shown in the first section.

- In the second section, enter a new position either in mm, or in % of the supporting curve length.

- The offset direction on a cutting path

Enable the Modify function, and then click the cutting path. The following dialog box is displayed.

- The upper section is used to assign a stop (trapp door * or device) at the end of the path (* only if your device is equipped with this type of evacuation).

- The lower section refers to the offsets.

- The notion of Range determines whether the change will be applied on the whole path or not.

- The checkbox of the Interpolation field is used to strictly respect the geometry machined at the end of the concerned element when generating the machine code.

- The offset direction on a linking path

Enable the Modify function, and then click the linking path. The following dialog box is displayed.

- Same as previous.

This field allows you to adjust the height of the head on the selected path element.

- Lead ins/lead outs

Enable the Modify function, and then click a lead in or lead out. The following buttons appear in the pop-up toolbar.

The Parameters button provides access to the following dialog box:

- The pattern is the type of lead in/lead out used.

- If the lead in/lead out consists of several geometric elements, the drop-down list provides access to each element.

- You can change these parameters.

- Possibility of fitting on center for circular cuttings. Specify a limit radius and the option will be effective for circles whose radius is less than or equal to the set limit.

- For "combined" machines, it is possible to add a tool punch by selecting its type and dimension.

- Additional elements

Enable the Modify function, and then click the additional element. The following dialog box is displayed.

- The building pattern is the type of lead in/lead out used.

- If the lead in/lead out consists of several geometric elements, the drop-down list provides access to each element.

- You can change these parameters.

In a nesting document (.meg), modifications of the:

- Nesting parameters

Enable the Modify function, and then click on the sheet.

Automatic and manual cutting functions

Automatic cutting and linking

Function use: Option to generate an automatic full path.

The command creates the cuttings of part’s contours and/or links them together using linking paths. If machinings already exist, the function takes them into account and adds them when creating the current path.

All internal contours of a part are performed before the external contour where they are located.

Where parts are found in wastes, the cutting of these parts is performed before performing the waste cutting.

The starting point of each created cutting is calculated to avoid going over this cutting when moving to the next cutting.

When the function is launched, the following command bar is displayed.

The Lead in and Lead out configuration button is common to all cutting functions. It defines the default lead in/lead out type for lines, corners and micro-joints, as well as their default positioning. It is possible to automatically insert lead ins and lead outs, only lead ins, or no lead in or lead out (see paragraph Lead in/Lead out).

The With Automatic drilling button is used to perform a ‘Drilling’ cutting configured according to a size of contours defined by the user.

The Without additional element button allocates an additional cutting by clicking the button.

Activating the function:

Click the With Automatic drilling button.

The following dialog box is displayed.

If desired, modify the value shown in the field.

By enabling this function, and in the example above, all contours smaller than 1.5mm will be drilled.

Warning: The Drilling parameter must be provided in the cutting parameter tables (see Cutting parameters section) with a threshold value.

The Contours button allows you to select the contours to be cut. Option to cut the internal and external contours, or only the internal contours, or only the external contours.

By default, the software performs the cuttings on all elements.

Once activated, the button sets the cutting mode in "head down" position to make the:

- links between the part’s cuttings; - links between parts; - links on micro tabs.

The Kind of machining button allows for scheduling the cutting type.

Objective: Understand the concept of optimizing the cutting path.

Import the part Part_cutting1.top in a Punch document .pch.

Allocate the automatic cuttings and linkings.

Choose the contour in the top left corner of the part; its position is therefore in X-, Y+.

Choose the X+ direction; the path will be calculated according to a "S" heading to X+.

Choose the X- direction; the path will be calculated according to a "S" heading to X-.

Automatic cutting

Function use: Option to cut parts automatically without creating linking paths between elements.

This function allows parts to be cut in automatic mode. The command does not automatically create the linking paths between elements.

Clicking on the command enables the following options:

The Not skiped Allocations option considers the contours that already contain allocations and performs the non-allocated contours. The Skiped Allocations does not consider the contours that already contain allocations.

The other buttons work in the same way as in the previous section (see Automatic cutting and linking section).

Manual cutting

Function use: Option to cut parts in manual mode.

This function allows parts to be cut manually. This command cuts the contours one by one by choosing the starting point and their order each time.


For the starting point of each cutting, the possibilities are the following:

- Automatic The clicked point is only used to define the selected contour. The starting point is chosen by the software.

- At key point The selected point is the key point of the element nearest to the clicked point. Key points of an element = end points and the points which are ¼, one half, ¾.

- At picking point The selected point is the grid point nearest on the element of the clicked point.


The Linkage button defines whether or not the cutting paths are linked by a path when created. If the Linkage option is set to Automatic, the successive cuttings will be automatically linked by a linking path; otherwise, the cuttings will remain isolated (internal contours are always made first).

Purpose of the function: Option to cut a part of contour.


In Complete machining, the part of contour is defined by a first element of the contour, a direction and a last element.

In Limited machining, the part of contour is defined by a type of geometry.

Single element cutting

Function use: Option to define a path or path elements based on geometry elements, element-by-element. This function allows you to define cutting paths by defining very precisely the cutting elements they contain.


The Complete machining option allows you to use the whole geometry element. The Limited machining option allows you to use a part of the geometry element.

Limitation points functions

Insert Remove Move

Function use: Inserting a limitation point allows you to limit a cutting element, break it down into several parts or reorder the path at a specific position.


Click on the path to cut, limit or reorder at the desired location.

To change the default positioning of the point, enable the At key point/At picking point button.

It is possible to reorder the path according to the point.

Lead in/lead out functions

Function use: Insertion of lead ins/lead outs on the part contours AND catalog management. Create/Replace Catalog management

Catalog management

Clicking on the Catalog management command enables the following dialog box:

The catalog allows you to add lead ins/lead outs and/or modify them. A leadin/out pattern is a sequence of cutting elements made up of lines, arcs and/or inverted arcs. Patterns means a lead in or lead out building pattern. Versions means a set of dimensions associated with a pattern. The Current pattern section shows the name and the description of the current pattern. To create a pattern, click the Add button.

The following dialog box is displayed:

Enter the name of the pattern, and then the description by clicking the Add line and/or Add arc and/or Add inverted arc buttons.

Validate with OK.

The Add version dialog box is displayed:

Rename the version.

Validate with OK.

The lead in/lead out has been created with its version(s).

Create/Replace

Clicking on the Create/Replace command enables the following options:

The drop-down menu makes it possible to choose whether the creation of lead ins/outs relates to all the contours or only the micro-joints.

The Lead in and Lead out configuration button allows you to modify the lead in/lead out type by accessing the dialog box seen in the next image:

The Change button provides access to the catalog which defines all the lead ins/lead outs.

The Create/Replace command puts the selected lead ins/lead outs on all the picked paths by replacing those that may already be placed.

The lead ins/lead outs are automatically positioned at the start and end extremities of paths.

Note: If the system creates lead ins/lead outs that fit in the part, these elements will appear in a magenta circle to indicate the problem; an alert will be shown each time the simulation display is started.

To modify a lead in/lead out type, click the wrench icon. The following menu is displayed:

Used to position a retracted lead in/lead out on a profile.

See paragraph Cutting parameter management

The change will be made locally Direct access to the lead in/lead out catalog and will have no impact on to change the type of lead in/lead out the pattern lead in/lead out completed in the catalog.

To change the position of a lead in/lead out, use the Limitation point function. The position of the limitation point will change the position of the lead in/lead out.

Set retracted along profile

In the case of laser-cut parts whose wastes are also finished parts, it is not possible to fit in full matter. The software allows you to perform a lead in alongside the profile to be machined.

Restrictions on use:

- The profile must not contain micro-joints. - No lead out on the profile path. - The retracted priming will be placed at the beginning of the segment where the lead in is located.

To access the function, use the wrench and select the lead in to be modified. The Set retracted along profile button will only appear if the above restrictions are lifted.

Additional elements functions

Function use: An additional element is a part of cutting path which is not directly based on geometry, but which is inserted between two standard cutting elements.

Below are the different types of additional elements:

Catalog management

Create/Replace Catalog management

Clicking on the Catalog management command enables the following options: The catalog is used to add additional elements and/or modify them.

Patterns corresponds to a building pattern of additional elements.

Versions means a set of dimensions associated with a pattern.

The Current pattern section shows the name and the description of the current pattern.

To create a pattern, click the Add button.


Specify the name of the additional element.

Select the type of additional element in the drop-down list.

Validate with OK.

The Add version box is displayed:

Rename the version.

Validate with OK.

The additional element has been created with its version(s).

Create/Replace

Clicking on the Create/Replace command enables the following options:

When the Selection button is set to Single, the additional elements are placed where you click on the geometry.

When the Selection button is set to Complete, the additional elements are placed on all the part’s geometries.

The Change button modifies the type of additional element.

Select a new additional element in the catalog. Click where you want to position the new additional element.


Validate by clicking on Yes.

To delete an additional element, use the Recycle Bin icon .

Choose ADDITIONAL CUTTING.

Click the additional elements to be deleted.

The software allows you to preview the lead ins/lead outs in the catalog and when they are configured.

Settings are required in Tools > Options:

Go to Cut > Priming/Exit.

Check the Preview of leadin/leadout in catalog box.

Automatic burn of matters function

Automatic burn of matters - Types of matters

The software allows you to define a matter with coating to activate the Cuttings to burn function automatically. The user defines the types of matters on which the Cuttings to burn function will be activated automatically.

Settings are required in Tools > Options:

Go to Cutting > Cutting - Marking - Burning.

Check the box corresponding to the selected matter to be burned.

Reorder path

Function use: Modifying the starting point of a closed cutting path = complete cutting.

Select the new starting point (element's end). The lead in will move accordingly.

Invert path

Function use: Modifying the running direction of a path.

Select the path to be inverted to modify the direction of the path.

The result is indicated by a change in direction of the direction arrows.

Add path

Function use: Merging two paths sharing a common end.

Select the two paths to be merged (their ends must be in contact).

The function proposes to continue to select other paths to be merged. Before merging After merging

The ends are represented by two different symbols. This indicates whether or not the path can be connected.

Symbol located at the end of the path: the path can be connected. Symbol located at the end of the path; the path cannot be connected.

Linking path between cutting path

Function use: Linking cutting paths together to schedule their creation.

The path is defined by selecting the cuttings to be linked with each other. Linking paths are blue. The blue solid line shows that links are performed with the head down. The blue dotted line shows that links are performed with the head up. The head position is defined in Management > Machine.

Insert path in a way

Function use: Adding one or more paths to an existing path.

Select a linking path of the way to complete, and then the cutting(s) to be inserted.

Insert waypoints

Function use: Forcing a linking path to go through some points in the case where already performed cuttings are contoured for example.

A waypoint may cause the linking path to deviate either in a straight line, or in a curvilinear way.

Choose the Between two lines or On arc button.

Use the wrench to move the waypoint(s) and add a machine stop, a trapp door or an optic marking.

Check linking path

Function use: Checking for potentially unsafe linking paths, i.e. paths that go over previously cut elements.

Option to see only dangerous paths by enabling the YES button in the menu below.

Function use: Creating micro-joints to keep the parts on the sheet.

Create micro-joints

Micro-joints can be positioned in several ways:

On corner

"Local" positioning by clicking on the desired corner (a). "Global" positioning by activating the Search best corners button (b).

Distribute on element

Positions a number of micro-joints on a line at regular distances.

By default, the number of micro-joints is 1.

You can change the number either:

- by clicking the Number = 1 button, and then entering the desired number. - or by modifying the number using the Number + and Number - buttons.

Used to position the micro-joints manually.

Using the mouse, select the approximate position of the micro-joint by clicking a line.

The Position value button positions the micro-joint relative to the beginning of the line by specifying the distance in millimeters at which the micro-joint should be placed relative to the line beginning.

The At Extremity button is used to position the micro-joint at the end of a line or an arc. The default value of micro-joints is 0.2 if no value is entered in the table in the Management > Micro tabs menu.

If a micro-joint is created on a laser cutting, the selected path will be cut into two parts separated by the micro-joint. If micro-joints are created before machining, the system will fit on the micro-joint.

Delete a micro-joint

To delete a micro-joint, enable the Attachs function in the menu bar.

By enabling the All on contour button, all the micro-joints of the contour will be deleted.

By enabling the All on element button, click the line on which you want to delete the micro-joint(s).

Modify a micro-joint

To modify a micro-joint, enable the Attachs function in the menu bar.

Select the line near the relevant micro-joint. The following dialog bar is displayed:

Possibility of modifying its position on the line, its size, or deleting it.

Automatic allocation of micro-joints during laser allocation

The software allows you to put micro-joints on corners and/or distributed on the part’s external contour during automatic allocation of laser sequences.

It is possible to put a single micro-joint on internal and/or external contours to prevent the waste/part from tipping over (if the contour does not already have micro-joints). The micro-joint is put on the contour if the contour meets the defined size criteria and the positioning of micro-joints can be configured via the Tools > Options menu.

Setting criteria for putting one micro on each contour to prevent swing Internal contours

In the above case, the software will put a micro-joint if the dimension of the internal contour is more than 30mm and less than 200mm (these values can be configured). Circular contour: The micro-joint will be put at the starting point of the circle. Rectangular contour: The micro-joint is put in the middle of the rectangle’s smaller segment. Oblong contour: The micro-joint is put at the center of the arc. Other contour: The micro-joint is first put in the center of an arc, or otherwise in the center of a line.

External contours

In the above case, the software will put a micro-joint if the dimension of the external contour is less than 300mm (these values can be configured).

The micro-joint is first put on a corner between two lines if the angle is 90° and toleranced to 45° (the tolerance value can be configured), only if the length of the lines is greater than or equal to 5mm (this value can be configured). If the micro has not been positioned, the software will put it in the center of the part’s largest arc if the arc length is greater than 4mm and less than 35mm (these values can be configured).

Configuration of micro-joints distributed on the external contour

The line lengths and the numbers of distributed micro-joints (for the automatic allocation) can be set by matter/thickness (via the Management > Micro joints menu).

If no data is entered for a matter/thickness, the default number of micro-joints will be the one that is used for the automatic splitting.

The values are kept during the entire TopSolid session. The distributed micro-joints are only created on a line if there is no distributed micro-joint before the automatic laser machining is launched: the micro-joints that are already on a line will not be replaced. Step 1 – Create micro-joints of 0.4 in all corners of the part.

Step 2 – Change the size of the 0.4 micro-joints to 0.2.

Step 3 – Delete the micro-joints on corners and position a micro-joint.

Step 4 – Allocate a micro-joint at 20mm from the beginning of the line at the top of the part.

Step 5 – Delete the micro-joint and allocate 6 micro-joints distributed on the part contour.
