Entry Requirements:
• Applicants who have reached 21 years of age onJanuary 1st of the calendar year of entry may enterwithout prior academic qualifications.
• Applicants under 21 years of age must satisfy theMatriculation requirements of the National Universityof Ireland, Galway.
• All applicants should have appropriate experiencein a training or educational organisation and must bein a position to undertake assignments and work-based projects relating to practical aspects oftraining or education.
• Participants are expected to be computer proficientand to be able to access and use the internet.
Enrolment and RegistrationApplication for enrolment and registration is made bycompleting an application form. Forms are available fromthe website at www.nuigalway.ie/openlearningcentre orby contacting the centre at 091 494055.
Course DeliveryCourse delivery is facilitated through module relatedworkshops. Participants are required to attend allworkshops. Workshop locations are selected to begeographically accessible for students. Course deliveryis also supported through the Blackboard LearningManagement system.
AssessmentParticipants are assessed through written assignments,practical assignments, online discussion contributions andlearning journal reflections.
Student SupportNUI Galway personnel, tutors and course administratorsprovide a high level of support to students throughoutthe programme. This is facilitated through telephonesupport and the Blackboard Learning Managementsystem. Students are encouraged to create informalsupport groups and networks.

Recognition of Prior LearningNUI Galway has adopted the process of Recognitionof Prior Learning (RPL). This may allow students to gainexemptions/credit on a programme of study based ondemonstrated learning achieved prior to admission.

IntroductionThe Open Learning Centre at the National University ofIreland, Galway provides accredited courses in trainingand education. Our approach promotes an accessiblelearning environment, allowing course participants todevelop independent learning skills while undertakingrecognised university programmes using a distancelearning model.
Who can apply?Courses are designed for
• vocational trainers, tutors, instructors• educational consultants • human resource specialists• those practising or planning a career as trainers in
the educational, industrial, commercial, voluntaryand community sectors.
The open learning programmes aim to develop theknowledge and skills of training professionals in linewith National and European competences and standards.
Distance LearningDistance Learning programmes combine open learningand face-to-face methods of delivery. This allowsparticipants to study at a time, place and pace whichsuit their individual circumstances.
ProgrammesAll programmes are designed on a modular, credit-basedmodel. Each module has a specific number of ECTS*. Astudent can attain 45 credits in a year. The Open LearningCentre offers programmes at levels 7, 8 and 9 on theNational Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). Such awardsare categorised as major or minor based on learningoutcomes and credits.
