This two day course will cover aspects of UCG including site selection criteria, site appraisal, coal geology and hydrogeology, gasification, CCS, environmental impact assessments, economics. It will introduce the basic principles of underground coal gasification, and what is required of the coal and overburden to establish a satisfactory commercial process.

Course content will be delivered by UCG Association Personnel and external expert speakers.

As the course will be held just ahead of our annual UCG Conference and Workshop, this affords us the opportunity of being able to secure lectures from those leading the field in UCG. It will also enable course attendees to gain valuable insight into UCG techniques and enhance participation in the 6th UCG Conference and Workshop.

Though the course is formal in structure we aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere and one that will encourage discussion and exchanges of ideas. We urge all attendees to take full advantage of the assembled speakers and to feel free to ask questions.

Course fee includes: Tuition fees, training equipment, course materials, lunch, refreshments and the course dinner on the Tuesday evening. All attendees receive hard copies of all presentations and course materials, plus full course CD.

Julie is the lead contact person in UCGA for all and has a reputation in the UCG industry for her knowledge and tireless promotion of the technology globally.

With over twenty years experience at mid and senior management levels in business development, marketing and events across a wide range of industries Julie’s experience makes her extremely adept at carrying out the variety of roles and areas of responsibility she has in the organisation.

In her current role at the UCGA, as well as overseeing all the day to day running of the Association she leads the Membership, Marketing, and Promotion, Media relations, Conferences, Workshops and outside relationships. Julie regularly presents at leading global energy conferences on the Opportunities of UCG, Public Perceptions of Coal and UCG and the work of the UCGA. She is the UCGA representative for the EU Coal Working Groups for SA, India, and China. Julie also leads and participates in the UCGA Training Courses.She is the main contact for all members and for any seeking information on UCG, including governments, energy associations, regulatory departments, the media and environmental groups, all at an international level.

Julie has been active in promoting underground coal gasification since 2003 and has worked with the UCG Association full time since 2007. She has given numerous UCG presentations all over the world, including workshops for the EU and works with many outside energy organizations formulating UCG Workshops; she is an integral part of the UCG Training Courses. She has authored several leading UCG articles and papers all with a focus of promoting the global growth and potential of UCG.

Kenneth has had a long and illustrious career in the energy sector and is an experienced engineer with over 50 years of commercial involvement within the energy sector.

Since graduating from Imperial College with 1st Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering Ken worked for ICI Agricultural Division; gaining first-hand knowledge of many processes then at the “sharp end” of technology, and now relevant to gasification, such as steam reforming, shift conversion, CO2 removal and handling, and energy recovery

He spent 17 years at RTZ ( now Rio Tinto) in project management and evaluation of mining, smelting and energy undertakings worldwide, latterly at Chief Executive level. Appointed Chief Executive of the Coal Authority in 1997, fortuitously coinciding with the European multinational UCG test project at Teruel in Spain, and was then responsible for the initiative which set up the UCG programme in UK, under the auspices of the Coal Authority, commencing in 1999.

Ken contributed to energy policy work in DTI, in preparation for the 2002 Energy White Paper. President of the Combustion Engineering Association 2002 - 2006, with various lectures and publications on energy matters, and attendance at gasification, environmental and other energy conferences, continually seeking to raise the profile of the potential for UCG as a major domestic, cost-effective and clean source of energy for the UK.

Shaun has several years experience in the UCG industry and has a wide ranging interest in UCG, a fact reflected by his varied role at Clean Coal Ltd. (CCL) and by his numerous presentations at leading international UCG conferences.

Shaun Lavis is a geoscientist by background, with professional experience in geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geophysics and site investigation, which he gained during working for Europe’s leading environmental consultancy as an Environmental Scientist and during working for a geophysics contractor. Shaun Lavis role at CCL includes site selection and evaluation (geological and hydrogeological), environmental risk assessment, regulatory assessment, project planning and budgeting and developing CCL’s process-financial model. Shaun Lavis contributed to CCL’s detailed site selection criteria and formal project evaluation methods and has applied these to numerous projects around the world, including: a large coal field in Xingjiang, NW China; coal fields in Nova Scotia, Canada; potential projects in Eastern Europe; a large coal field in Colombia and our UCG project in Turkey.

Shaun Lavis was also involved in determining the regulatory environment for our Turkey project, helped manage the budgeting and strategy for the project, undertook a site visit and worked with local experts to obtain hydrogeological and environmental information about the site. Additionally, Shaun Lavis helped determine the requirements for formal UK UCG licence applications and was involved in the successful application for five UK UCG licences.

Professor Peter Styles

In 1977, he took up the post of Lecturer in Geophysics in the Department of Geology atUniversity College, Swansea where he became interested in using mining-inducedearthquakes to predict catastrophic failures in coal mines. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Geophysics in 1987 and moved to the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Liverpool in 1988 as part of the UGC review of Earth Science during which time he carried out extensive collaborative microseismological research with CSIRO Division of Geomechanicsin Brisbane Australia on coal mine stability and methane out burst prediction, and onmicrogravity for the detection of abandoned gold workings at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

He also has interests in low-frequency noise (Infrasound) and its effects on population and has recently resolved the issues of the effects of Wind Turbine Vibration on the UK Capability to discriminate Nuclear Weapons Tests at the CTBTO station at Eskdalemuir for the MOD/DTI/BWEA.

In 1998 he was promoted to Reader in Geophysics in 1998 and has published more than 90 papers and professional reports and has obtained external research funding of many millions of pounds. His continuing research interests are in the use of high resolution geophysical imaging techniques for monitoring the underground geomechanical and hydrogeophysical processes associated with Clean Coal technologies including UCG, ECBM and associated Carbon Capture and Storage in Coal.

In 2000 Peter moved to Keele University as Professor of Applied and Environmental Geophysics where he was Head of the School of Earth Sciences and Geography from 2001 to 2003. He is currently Head of Energy and Sustainability Strategy at Keele University where he intends to use the energy stored in the extensive coal underlying the campus to provide methane to power the campus. During his career Peter had held the following posts, Honorary Secretary of the Geological Society of London from 1996 to 2000 Member of the Editorial Board of the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology.

Prof. Peter Styles has had a long and illustrious career. He graduated from Oxford, where he read physics in 1972 (BA (Hons.) and then studied for a PhD in Geophysics at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the Plate Tectonics of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

He is a Chartered Geologist and European Geologist. Fellow of the Royal Astronomical SocietyFellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Member of the American Geophysical Union and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers. Peter James Jackson

Following studies in physics, oceanography and geophysics at Liverpool University, Peter Jackson went on to teach Environmental Physics at the University of Kent at Canterbury.

Peter joined the R & D division of British Coal Corporation in 1978 to undertake research in coalfield exploration techniques. He went on to lead the corporation’s underground exploration division deploying specialist geophysical and drilling technology in deep mines throughout the UK and internationally. His team was granted the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1988.

In 1994 Peter was a founding director of IMC Geophysics Ltd, now the international arm of Tesla-IMC. While maintaining a specialism in coalfield exploration, the company rapidly developed new business in hydrocarbons projects in Europe and Africa, resulting in the Queen’s Award for Exports in 2000.

Throughout his 30-years experience within the coal industry Peter has been continuously involved in research activities connected with coalbed methane (CBM) and underground coal gasification (UCG). He has been a member of EU expert’s committees, the Mineral Industry Research Organisation’s research council and the DTI’s steering group on UCG.

Tesla-IMC International provides a comprehensive range of geophysical services to a wide and growing client base. The company owns and operates I/O AHV 4, specialist exploration equipment, including ARAM 24 recording equipment and Vibroseis Units with Pelton vibrator electronics, delivering 2D and 3D seismic surveys supported by a full seismic processing and interpretation service. In recognition of the overseas operations, the company received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2000. It also has on its staff the world’s most experienced practitioners of underground seismic for in-mine exploration, having applied the technique on four continents and received the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement during its development. Robert Godbolt holds the position of Business Development for Scientific Drilling and covers the UK, Africa and Caspian Region. He has 11 years with SDC primarily involved with Directional Drilling, MWD/LWD Operations, and Rate Gyro Surveying. He studied at Robert Gordon’s University in Aberdeen and gained a Diploma in Engineering. Robert is currently involved in establishing Scientific Drilling as the leading company involved in Directional Drilling in Coal Seams.

Training Course Summary

Horizontal directional drilling has two very significant benefits; it reduces environmental impact and greatly improves recovery. New enabling technologies, learned techniques and unconventional well planning have revolutionized coal bed methane and unconventional shale & tight sand gas horizontal drilling. Horizontally drilled laterals or multi-laterals can be successfully drilled in both thick and very thin seams, as narrow as 2 feet.

This training presentation will outline the latest drilling technology used to drill these horizontal laterals and discuss emerging navigation technology designed specifically for lateral wellbore placement.

Dr Green is a Founding Director of UCG Partnership and Managing Director of UCG Engineering Ltd, a UK engineering company which provides specialist technical and management services to companies on underground coal gasification.

He is Board Director for Technology of the Australian ASX listed company, Clean Global Energy Ltd, which is focused on developing commercial UCG projects in Australia, Asia and North America. Recent UCG projects to be announced by CGE’s include one to supply syngas to an AES power station on the Oklahoma/Arkansas and CGE have joined up with Essar Energy to bid for UCG blocks by Coal of India.

Recent involvement in EU supported projects have included the €3.5M HUGE (2007-2010) as Chairman of the Steering Committee (UCGA Representative), and the ongoing (2010-2012) Bulgarian led €3.0m project to investigate CO2 storage in very deep coal seams, exploited y UCG. He is also UCG Policy advisor to a UCG project in Hungary.

He has authored many papers on UCG and has made presentations at most of the major coal and energy conferences, including several to the annual UCGA Conference in London. He was previously Director of the European trial of UCG in coal of intermediated depth which took place in Spain (1996-1999) and later became chief advisor to the UK Government initiative for UCG (1999-2004). He has 36 years experience in energy related engineering research, and is a Liveryman of the City of London.

Marc Mostade has over 20 years experience in UCG ranging from fundamental research to managing UCG pilot plants. He currently heads the technical team at Clean Coal Ltd. (CCL) and oversees all project management and production & technical management of UCG projects, including engineering, quality management, environmental management, safety management, deep coal engineering, characterisation of underground reservoirs, managing gases at high pressure, chemistry and physics of energy processes and process control.

Recently, Marc has produced detailed cost calculations of CRIP module-based UCG (applicable to pre-commercial & commercial phases), completed the basic design of CRIP module-based UCG (6 project cases studied) including mass & energy balances and equipment specifications and been involved in the pre-selection of 6 projects from around the world. Previous experience includes: 1980 -1982: Researcher, Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Liège Belgium.

Applied chemical engineering methods to models and simulations of surface and underground coal gasification. 1983-1991, Institution pour le Développement de la Gazéification Souterraine (IDGS), Liège and Thulin, Belgium. Co-ordinated a Research and Development programme, organised between IDGS and six European universities (Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands). Responsible for the design, commissioning and, finally, operation, of all engineering works, including: instrumentation; data acquisition systems; process control systems; and UCG monitoring tools (mass & energy balances, tracer tests and modelling).

During this time, Marc also participated in international UCG Symposiums, was a visiting engineer to active UCG trials in the US (e.g. Centralia-Tono 1, Hanna-Rocky Mountain 1 and Rawlins) and became a member of the European Working Group on Underground Coal Gasification.1988-1989: Member of the European Working Group on Underground Coal Gasification- Marc Mostade was an author of a Comprehensive Report on UCG to CEC, Brussels.

1991-1998: Deputy Director-Technical, Underground Gasification Europe (UGE), Alcorisa, Teruel Province, Spain- Marc Mostade worked on the famous Underground Gasification Europe (UGE), pilot project at El Tremadal, Spain, a 17M Euros project with 15 technical staff, 15 engineers and 15 technicians.

As the Deputy Director-Technical, Marc Mostade supervised the specifications, request for quotations, purchase orders, commissioning and start-up of: all surface plant equipment including: (i) oxygen and nitrogen cryogenic plants; (ii) process & sparging water plants; (iii) control and data acquisition systems; (iv) gas analysis unit; (v) product gas flow metering and letdown station; (vi) flare & incinerator; and (vii) utilities (electricity, eater, nitrogen, propane and steam).

1999-2008: Part time independent consultant- during this period, Marc advised on deep coal engineering (for UCG, Coal Bed Methane and CO2 sequestration in coal beds) and well completion technologies.

He also participated in the RECOPOL (CO2-Enhanced Coal Bed Methane) project and acted as a Product Manager for Geopro S.A. Mons (Belgium), for whom he developed and marketed new products based on inflatable packer technology (riserless pump installation, well repairing by the “swaging technique,” deviation whipstock for great depth applications) in the field of drilling & cementing, well completion and civil works.

Expertise SummaryProf. Colin Snape (FRSE) has been involved in fuel science and related disciplines for over 30 years having worked at the Coal Research Establishment of British Coal before moving to the University of Strathclyde in 1987 and then to the University of Nottingham in 2000. His current research programme encompasses applied geochemistry focussing on novel pyrolysis methods to aid oil exploration, heavy oil production from alternative feedstocks, including coal and biomass, fundamental aspects of combustion and carbonisation, together with developing adsorbents for CO2 capture both in combustion and gasification and for the control of other pollutants, including mercury. Rohan Courtney was in banking for 27 years, where he specialised in energy and media, and held the position of General Manager for Europe of State Bank of New South Wales for eight years until 1990. From 1990 to 1992 and at the request of the Bank of England, he was appointed Group Chief Executive of the merchant bank, Robert Fraser. He was Executive Chairman of West 175 Media Group from 1996 to 2001. He has held a number of directorships in a variety of industries. He was Non Executive Director (Senior Independent Director from 2000) of Tullow Oil plc from 1993 to 2007 and was Chairman of the Audit Committee. He is a Non Executive Director of Corac Group plc. In 2005 he co-founded the UCG Partnership (now UCG Association). He has been involved in the development of UCG since 2003 and is Chairman of Clean Coal Limited which he founded in 2007.

Dr. Stefan Krause

Dr Krause is a lecturer for Environmental Geo-science at the Earth Science and Geography Department, Keele University, UK. He graduated from Potsdam University, Germany in 2000 in Geo-ecology and did a PhD in Hydrology in 2005.

From 2005-2007 he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Sustainable Water Management at the Lancaster Environment Centre. Stefan Krause is an expert in experimental and model-based investigations of hydrological and hydro-chemical processes at the groundwater-surface water interface. His work on riparian hydrological and biogeochemical process dynamics and groundwater–river connectivity is essential for understanding the influences of groundwater-surface water interactions on floodplain hydrology, redox conditions and nutrient cycling, water management and risk assessment.

He developed an upscaling approach to identify river-groundwater connectivity zones and the IWAN model (Integrated Water Balance and Nutrient Dynamics), which have been successfully applied to quantify the implications of groundwater–surface water influences on the riparian groundwater dynamics, nitrate transport and retention. In collaboration with the Environment Agency he developed a risk framework for assessing the pollution risk of groundwater dependent terrestrial ecosystems that is now used for the UK wide implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. His research on hydrological and biogeochemical processes at groundwater-surface water interfaces including investigations of limitations and uncertainties of coupled model approaches are of great importance for river basin management and environmental risk assessment.

He is co-leading the Hydro-ecology and Biogeochemistry working group of the NERC-funded international “Knowledge Transfer Network on groundwater-surface water interactions, and hyporheic zone processes” (NE/E002714/1) and a committee member of the Eurpoean Geoscience Union (EGU) Sub-Division on “Estuaries, Wetlands & Eco-Hydrology”.

Cliff is responsible for the ongoing development of Carbon Energy’s world-leading technology. Additionally, Cliff undertakes assessment of potential coal deposits that may be suitable for the Company’s expanding portfolio of Australian and international projects. He is also heavily involved with the evaluation of emerging carbon capture and storage opportunities. Cliff has been associated with advancing the development of UCG process technology for more than 15 years and has degrees in Geology from the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne. He has almost 30 years experience in mining research at CSIRO culminating in him acting as Chief of CSIRO Exploration and Mining Division, interim Director of the Centre for Low Emission Technology, and Executive Manager, Queensland Centre of Advanced Technologies. Dr. Mallett serves as a Trustee of the UCG Association.

The UCG Association is the representative body for the global Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) industry and exists to provide impartial, unbiased information and training on all aspects of UCG including Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
