Department of Radiation Oncology Residency Program

The Department of Radiation Oncology offers a dynamic and comprehensive residency program. As ahospital-based service with a major academic role within the medical college, our department considersresident training its most important academic function. Resident physicians complete our training program as highly capable medical professionals, prepared fortheir American Board of Radiology (Radiation Oncology) certification examinations and are more thanready to competently practice radiation oncology without supervision. They achieve this status under theguidance of staff radiation oncologists and medical physicists. Every day attending physicians and residents engage in one-to-one teaching and learning throughcarefully structured academics and hands-on experience with a high volume of patients from apopulation experiencing a broad range of cancers. Our department's radiation program for cancer is one of the largest in the Delaware Valley, treating morethan one hundred patients daily at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and up to 60 at our largestaffiliated facility, Aria Health, Torresdale Campus, and giving up to 60,000 radiation therapy treatments atthose facilities annually. The multi-disciplinary programs coordinated through the Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center, andpredominantly housed at the Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment, continue to expand. Currently, we runmultidisciplinary clinics in genitourinary, thoracic, sarcomas, liver tumors, as well as central nervoussystem tumors. In addition, several multidisciplinary conferences take place each week. To further expand the exposure of our residents, the department has in place rotations in pediatricradiation oncology rotation at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and aCyberknife/gynecologic rotation at Christiana Care in Newark, Delaware. The residents who havecompleted these rotations have had outstanding clinical experiences. Today, technological upgrades are significantly changing our treatment planning and delivery. Jeffersonstaff and residents selectively analyze the relative benefits of these new tools so that we can advise ourcolleagues and community. Our department is also rich in research experience and activity. Residents interested in research are sureto gain involvement in clinical, translational, or basic science research projects. Together with the faculty, our residents have a long tradition of presentations at national meetings and peer-reviewed publications.Learning also comes from experienced oncology nurses, technical staff, and scientists in our departmentand throughout the university.
