QUICK START PAGE 2
This Quick Start guide to using Trailing Shield® is not intended to replace
the User Instruction Manual, which we request that you read in its entirety
at some time, however where it is important to use the system immediately,
these quick steps can be used.
1. Unpack the Trailing Shield® and check it is the correct size and style
as ordered. There should be 1 or 2 blue hoses attached depending on style
ordered and fitted with white silicone side skirts. If any of these are
missing, please contact us immediately.
2. Attach the shield to your welding torch by tightening the jubilee clip to
the gas cup on the torch.
3. Attach the argon supply to the blue hose on the Trailing Shield®.
4. Make sure welding torch is in correct position and place shield on or
around piece to be welded.
It is advisable to make a test weld on a scrap piece of material before
welding the critical material.

INTRODUCTION PAGE 4
Thank you for purchasing one of our Trailing Shield® for the welding of
titanium, zirconium, stainless steels, duplexes and other reactive metals
and alloys.
The affinity of hot metals and alloys for gases such as oxygen, nitrogen
and hydrogen means that inert gas shielding is essential during welding.
When welding titanium, zirconium, stainless and duplex steels the use of
Trailing Shield® will protect the hot metal by leaving it covered with an
inert gas shield for some time after the weld torch has moved forward onto
new metal. Careful use and following these instructions could help you to
produce zero colour welds.
Stainless and duplex steels etc will oxidise in the presence of oxygen,
leaving slag at worst and heavy oxide to be cleaned off at best. Avoid this
lengthy and expensive work by using a Trailing Shield®.
Inert gas protection is needed for not only the molten pool, but also for the
hot solid metal behind the weld torch. This is why you have purchased a
Trailing Shield®.
The Trailing Shield® come ready for use and merely need to be attached
to the welding
torch which is to
be used and to
have the purge
gas supply
connected.

FITTING YOUR TRAILING SHIELD PAGE 5
Each radiused (OD/ID) Trailing Shield® is made for the exact diameter
of pipe or vessel being welded, with the contours being matched to outside
or inside welding.
Flat (FL) versions are also available for the welding of flat sheet products.
You will have ordered the Trailing Shield® to suit either a MIG/TIG torch
nozzle or a plasma torch nozzle for either manual or automatic welding, so
the jubilee clip attached to the Trailing Shield® should match your
specified requirements.
If the jubilee clip is the wrong size, then you can either return it to us to
have another one fitted or you can fit your own fairly easily by undoing the
old one and putting a new one on.

CONNECTING THE PURGE GAS SUPPLY PAGE 6
As you will see, the Trailing Shield® have their own purge gas line and
connection and you will need to join the fitting provided, to a suitable
argon gas supply. The only connection provided is a male fitting and the
female matching fitting is to ensure your argon gas line has a shut-off
capability. If you do not have access to these fittings, see the spares list
attached.
Should you wish, you may remove the male fitting which we provide and
use your own connectors.
After connecting the Trailing Shield® to the respective gas cup, tape over
the gap left on the top of the Trailing Shield® between the shield and the
nozzle, this is to cover the small air gap between the torch and the shield
to prevent air from entering.
The gaskets are made of silicone rubber and are
resistant to a temperature of up to 230˚C. These
gaskets will eventually become burnt, damaged and
worn and you can purchase replacement gaskets or
lengths of gasket material through TiTech
Production AS who will provide details of your
nearest distributor.
The gasket material is available in both hard and soft options which can be
selected depending upon the method of use and the wear rate. The soft
material is semi-translucent whereas the harder material is white and
opaque.
The hard, white silicone gaskets are suitable for higher heat input
applications, than the clear, translucent gaskets. If the gaskets become
burned, they can be removed and replaced the other way around with the
undamaged side inwards.

PURGE GAS PAGE 7
Always ensure that your source of inert purge gas is a quality controlled
source providing you with the right degree of purity for the welding job in
hand.
For example, titanium should be welded with argon, which is 99.9995%
pure, that is 5 ppm of impurities.
For stainless steels, it is possible to relax the specification by one order of
magnitude, i.e. 99.995% pure or 50 ppm impurities.
If your welding code allows, an argon/ hydrogen mixed gas can be used
for stainless steel (not titanium or zirconium). The hydrogen helps to ‘mop
up’ any residual oxygen atoms that might be left buzzing about in the weld
space.
If you use a lower grade argon, the Trailing Shield® may not provide the
benefit for which they were intended.

GAS FLOW RATES PAGE 8
You can set your gas flow rates from 5- 10 l/m (10 - 20 cfh). This will
depend upon the material, its thickness, the gas type and the speed of the
welder. It is possible to have the flow rate higher as well because of the
three layers of stainless steel mesh inside the shield, which gives a smooth,
laminar, non-turbulent flow.
Fit a gas lens into the welding torch to distribute the shield gas evenly from
there as well. Be careful not to use a phenolic or a plastic nozzle, to avoid
contaminating the weld with Carbon.
If you have purchased a Trailing Shield® for automated welding you may
wish to use a greater flow of purge of gas. As a rule of thumb, if the welding
speed is between 15 - 25 inches/ min (380 - 630) mm/min and the welding
current between 325 - 360 amps, the gas flow rate would be 60 cfh (28
l/m).

TROUBLE SHOOTING PAGE 9
Should the Trailing Shield® still be giving oxidised welds, even though
the quality of the weld gas has been assured, you should check the
connections and the hoses. If possible, measure the quality of the argon gas
being emitted from the Trailing Shield®.
If you have no means of measuring the quality of the purge gas, place the
welding torch with its Trailing Shield® onto a piece of material and make
a small linear weld, typically ½ inch long, ensuring a pre-purge time of at
least 20 seconds and a post purge time of about 30 seconds.
If the weld is not bright and shiny after this proceedure then it is correct to
assume that there will be a leak in the hose connections or that the gas is
not of the quality expected.
It is unlikely that the Trailing Shield® in itself would contribute to
oxidised welds, unless it has been abused, such as being left out in a wet
environment.
If there is any doubt about the cleanliness of the Trailing Shield®, remove
the gaskets and any other rubber or plastic fittings and bake the Trailing
Shield® in an oven up to about 100˚C (212˚F) for 1 hour and that will
ensure that any volatile products inside the Trailing Shield® boil off
leaving the inside clean and dry.
In the event that all such tests have been carried out and oxidised welds are
still occuring then return the product and we will test it in our welding
laboratory for you.
In the event that our Trailing Shield® does not perform and is undamaged,
it will be replaced free of charge within the first 12 months of purchase.
