Thank you to everyone that helped facilitate our February dance (See new Square Dance call, Relay The Caller, page 6, this newsletter.). Our February dance was another successful dance event — fun, and of course a challenging weekend with Bill Haynes. If you haven’t, please check-out the TRAILBLAZER February 2015 supplement. In this newsletter edition many photos of our members and guests at our prior weekend dance are shown. Maybe, that’s why Social is part our club’s name. Thank you to our photographers, Rod Anderson and David Moorhouse, and Hal Anker, our TRAILBLAZER Editor, for this supplement.

There are many members behind the scenes that don’t get mentioned, for example, our Webmaster Karl Springer. Karl not only takes care of our website, but also sends out the email notifications to Trailblazers members, callers and friends. THANK YOU KARL. Volunteers, like Karl, are what make our club the outstanding organization that it is. Our Trailblazers Board is another part of the club that makes decisions and ensures the club weekends run smoothly. We couldn’t do our job and hold these weekends without them. Please see the slate for the upcoming Board candidates on page 4 of this issue. Thanks all of you, willing to stay on the board, and a new volunteer Barbara Jones, who will share the Treasurer slot with Sam Mehlman. Thanks Barbara for getting Sam to stay on the Board. (I wonder what Barbara did to help us keep Sam on the board? Whatever you did it worked.) We are still looking for a 3rd Vice President so Barbara Marshall doesn’t have to take care of this office for us. This is a great opportunity to get involved and help with decisions the Board makes. We don’t have many Board meetings so don’t let that stop you and you will get plenty of help. If you can help Barbara Marshall out, please let her or us know this weekend. Vic started dancing in 1973 with a teen square dance club where he met his wife-to-be Debbie. They started dancing the advanced level in 1977 while in high school. A year later they started learning challenge and Vic developed an interest in calling. Vic occasionally walked their tape group through some material that he had written. Later he tried 'calling' the material accompanied by taped music. After that, he purchased a Hilton sound system and microphone and jumped into learning how to call. Vic started calling the challenge level in November 1981 and currently

calls Basic through C4. He has taught classes at all levels from Basic through C3B. Vic, a self-taught caller, has never attended a caller's school as a student (whether this is good or bad is debatable). However, he has taken about six months of weekly voice lessons, and has learned calling skills from observing other callers and listening to criticism and comments made by callers and dancers. Vic's mentors are Johnny Preston, Dave Hodson, and Lee Kopman. He has called in 31 states, 8 countries (other than the USA), and at the National Square Dance Convention in Birmingham (1985), Houston (1987), Anaheim (1988), and Long Beach (2009). Vic is currently a permanent staff caller with AACE (Academy for Advanced and Challenge Enthusiasts) and has been a CALLERLAB member since 1989. Debbie and Vic are the authors of "A Ceder Chest of C3 Square Dance Definitions" (first published in November 1990), "A Ceder Chest of C1 and C2 Square Dance Definitions," and "A Ceder Chest of A1 & A2 Square Dance Definitions." He has written several square dance related programs for the IBM PC compatibles, notably the Couple Rotation Program and the Ceder Square Dance System. When they are not square dancing, Debbie and Vic enjoy East Coast style swing dancing (i.e., Jitterbug) and round dancing. Vic has played the piano since grade school, specializing in Ragtime (Scott Joplin and that crowd). Caitlyn, Debbie and Vic's daughter, is a student at University of California, Santa Barbara, and also square dances at the challenge level.

Donna McCullough has recovered from her little slip at last month’s dance and is also back to Square Dancing. Responding to a previous Trailblazers message, she remarked: “Thank you. All my friends in the Square Dance community are very special to me. We enjoy being members of Trailblazers and danc-ing with all of you.”


Steve Klinger, in late November sustained a head injury that in mid-January developed into some severe, life-altering medical issues. He required hospitalization, surgeries and rehabilitation from January 17 through February 12. Steve is now at home, continues to improve, is doing marvelously well and is back Square Dancing. In fact, he plans on joining us at Sunday Trailblazers. As previously planned, Steve and Mickey will be hosting the Phantom’s C3A workshop next Saturday, March 14. Steve and Mickey thank each and everyone of you for all the outpouring of love and support that they received.

Relay The Caller, a 5-Part Call, by Bruce Rosenblum Part 1. Gina Phearson did a Swing Thru Burbank Airport on Saturday morning followed by an As Couples Circulate with Bill Haynes ending at Mel's Dance Hall. Part 2. Later on Saturday evening, Marvin Fishman and Linda McCracken, accompanied by Bill Haynes, did a 1/2 Circulate from Mel’s Dance Hall to arrive at the Shaw’s home in Manhattan Beach so Bill could call a C3B dance. Part 3. Marvin and Linda then at the appropriate time did another 1/2 Circulate with Bill to arrive at Marvin's house for the rest of the

night. Part 4. Bruce & Nancy Rosenblum, did a Disconnected Circulate to Marvin’s to pick up Bill on the way to Mel's Dance Hall for the Sunday Dance. Part 5. Bruce & Nancy, after the Sunday dance did a Finished a Swing Thru Ontario Airport to return Bill back for his flight home. Thanks to the Trailblazers who participated in this tip and so efficiently executed the parts of this call. Without all of them doing their part, oh yes, you to Bill, this weekend would not have been as successful and enjoyable for rest of the Trailblazers and guests.
