PARCC Assessment
The Third and Fourth Grade students have been actively preparing for the upcoming PARCC
assessment using the tablets. They have been exploring the many different tools that will be
available to complete the test items. We need your help and support during the testing weeks of
March 9th and March 16th. This will be a stressful time for not only our teachers, but for the students,
as well. In an effort to make the testing go smoothly, we are asking that you help assist by doing the
following:
Ensuring your child is getting a good night sleep
Make sure your child eats a healthy well balanced breakfast
Encourage them to attend school each day and arrive on time
Wish your child good luck each day and remind them to listen carefully to instructions
Remind your child the test is important and to do their very best
Explain to your child the importance of using their time wisely
Encourage your child to stay focused on the test even if others have finished
If you would like to learn more about the upcoming PARCC assessment, please visit http://parcc.pearson.com/. Cell Phones in School Zones Please remember talking on your cell phone while driving in a school zone is PROHIBITED. It is very disheartening to see a parent on their cell phone when we have children trying to safely get in and out of vehicles. It only takes a second for something very serious to occur. You are risking the safety of our students, staff, parents and guardians by engaging in such behavior. Please refrain from your handheld device during pick-up, drop-off, and at any point when entering our school zone. Thank you for your continued support! If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs. Wright
First Graders at Indian Trail School want
100…
Mrs. Wright (Principal at Indian Trail School)
read aloud I can teach my dog 100 words to all
of the first grade students on their 100th day
of school.
First Grade
First Graders at Indian Trail School are ready to begin their third quarter. It is hard to believe that the year is
already half over! Children have been busy this month learning about the lives and important contributions of two of
our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Students also celebrated being 100 days smarter
on the 100th day of school. They listened to a story read by Mrs. Wright and did extension activities to mark the
special day. Way to go First Grade!
Second Grade
The word of the month is “hundred,” as in one hundred days of school! Second grade students used great creative skills
when designing and modeling “100th Day of School” shirts. We saw one hundred stars, one hundred cheerios, one
hundred stickers, and hundreds of other designs as well. What a great way to celebrate a milestone! Students really
enjoyed showing off their handiwork, and some teachers got into the spirit as well!
Also, second graders learned all about the Potawatomi Indians during their second “in school” field trip. Our guest
speaker compared life as a young native 500 years ago to that of our students in the present. He showed games the
natives played, discussed how they used animals for many of their needs, and how they learned to survive even in the
harshest weather. Some students even got to try on a shirt, moccasins and boots made from real animal skins. There
were hundreds of smiles in the second grade wing!
Wearing their “100 Day of
School” shirts are students

second grade class. From left

THIRD GRADE NEWS
Third grade students bundled up and ventured out at Naper Settlement on February 25th to discover life in the 1800’s.
This unique field trip allowed students to see history come to life. During the year students have been learning about
colonial life, chores, jobs, and types of living. Each class got to visit the Blacksmith Shop where we helped make iron
pins, the Print Shop where we learned about letters, print machines, and cost of making newspapers back then. We also
explored the Log House where students saw first-hand how people use to live in one room and the chores that were
done to keep the room neat and tidy. In the one-room Copenhagen Schoolhouse, children experienced what school was
like before technology (WITH A LOT OF RULES). The lifestyle of the 1800s came alive through sights, sounds and
smells as students participated in hands-on activities, guided by educators in period clothing, to introduce concepts
related to chores and common trades of the time period. Everyone had a blast!!!!
Look who wore the same design for the 100th
Day of School! It’s Mrs. Deniz Aslan and her
student, Malic Breish
Here are Maddie Giampaolo and Mrs. Lucy
Rios modeling their handiwork. So pretty in
pink!

Patricia Pfeiffer’s class as they try on
authentic items of Potawatomi clothing
and footwear. From left to right, they

Thank You to All of Our Heart Heroes!
During the week of Feb 9-13th, Indian Trail students and staff participated in Heart Hero Week. Together, we raised
$7368.00 to support the American Heart Association’s efforts to save lives in our community through the annual
“Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser
Check out our newest 2014-15 Jump Rope for Heart banner proudly hanging in the gym. Physical Education teachers,
Mr. Jacobi and Miss Shea have been busy teaching a month long unit on Jump Rope! Our students are quickly catching
on and mastering new and challenging jump roping skills and games.
Congratulations Indian Trail School’s 2015 Heart Ambassadors for their TOP fundraising efforts!
1st Place- Breanne Lott –$640.00
2nd Place- Noah Adams – $575.00
3rd Place- Mason Meskimen- $370.00
4th Place- Braedon Kunz - $310.00
Congratulations to Mrs. Rios 2nd grade class; they are the winners of the annual popcorn and movie party with 81 % of
the students participating in the fundraiser. In addition, special kudos to Mrs. Plese’s 3rd grade class, they alone raised
a whopping $1175.00 in donations to support The American Heart Association.
Thank you to all of our Indian Trail students, families and staff for your outstanding efforts to make this year’s Jump
Rope for Heart our most successful year ever!
Fourth Grade News
On February 17, the fourth grade students from Indian Trail School had their in school field trip. Visitors from
Pilcher Park Nature Center performed “Tales of the Underground.” Students were able to gain a little first hand
knowledge of what life was like as a slave in the 1800’s. Each student became a passenger on the “Underground
Railroad”, receiving a name of an actual escaped slave.
They learned secret codes to use to protect them on their journey, listened to stories of actual slaves from the
Underground Railroad, and learned how to create an escape code through the creation of a quilt square.
At the conclusion, each student found out what happened to their slave on their journey. Many questions were
answered. For example: Who was he/she purchased from to become a slave? Was he/she captured? Did the runaway
slave make it to freedom? and What family members were left behind?
Science Club Newsworthy
The Science Club has been very curious this month! WE have been learning about absorption. Students did a variety of
experiments to learn more about how absorption works. The little scientist even created their own snow that they
could enjoy indoors, and even better, it doesn’t melt. Students also looked at absorption using paper towels. The
scientist added food coloring to our experiment to better see their results.

WINTER CARNIVAL 2015
Staff vs. student basketball game
On February 13, we had a blast with our Staff vs. Student
Basketball Game. The students were eager to take on our
teachers and score big during the game. There were many
surprises handed out to some participating students,
which made it more exciting for the students. Our Summit
Hill Team had to take on their first of many tasks as you
continued to support SHEF and donate money for the
foundation. Students got a chance to spray our team with
silly string. You will see below, the students had a lot of
fun with this activity.
SHEF Fundraising Activities Continue…
On Friday, February 27, we had another
round of funny activities that our Summit
Hill Team had to participate in given your
continued efforts to raise money for our
foundation. Mr. Jacobi, Mr. Renardo, Mrs.
Jurasits, Ms. Horan, and Mrs. McGrath had
to face either being duct tape to a wall or
wrapped in toilet paper. This activity
created a lot of laughter and excitement
through our cafeteria. Students were
excited to get picked to join in on the fun.
All of our teachers were very good sports.
