SILVER CITY DAYS 2016

Lights, camera, action were Friday night buzz words in down-town Trail.

First up was the Miss Trail pag-eant, an evening of speeches and performances at The Bailey, cul-minating in the crowning of new Silver City royalty and inaugural waves to the crowd from a well lit centre stage.

Miss Colombo Lodge Hannah Flick took home the Miss Trail title and a 14-pound crown to match the heavy duty of acting as city ambassador for the next year. Alongside, Miss Kiwanis Trynity Turnbull will proudly represent the City of Trail as Miss Trail Princess and Miss Shoppers Drug Mart Nicole Johnson was named Miss

Congeniality from her five fellow candidates.

Going into the evening the six candidates which included Miss Firefighters Keandra Billingsley, Miss Knights of Pythias Caïa Gagnon, and Miss Legion Naomi Savage, already received 85 marks based on personal interview, train-ing, speech and knowledge. Another 15 marks based on talent and an im-promptu question were determined by pageant judges (and former Miss Trail title holders) Tammy Shiewe, Lindsay Klingbile and LeeAnn Neaves as well as Nelson-based performer, Mackenzie Hope.

After laughter, tears, and sashes awarded, some of the crowd moved toward the Esplanade and joined an estimated 1,000-plus people who gathered for the inaugural bridge lighting ceremony.

“Let the show begin - let’s light the lights!”

With those words from Trail Mayor Mike Martin, the Victoria Street Bridge officially lit up with musical flair and accompanying dance moves by Steps Dance Studio and The Bailey’s Nadine Tremblay with Rupert Keiller.

“We are absolutely delighted

with the end product and now have the opportunity to really showcase the downtown through recognizing and celebrating the presence of the Columbia River,” Martin added.

The lights will typically operate from sunset to midnight each day.

This week the city is carrying over a green theme in recognition of Mental Health Week.

It was a Saturday that Silver City Days organiz-ers could only dream about.

Blue skies, perfect weath-er and enthusiastic crowds were out in droves for a day that featured a sparkling pa-rade, a fun-filled and hearty sidewalk café and an unfor-gettable good time during the Grapestomp.

“The crowd at the rink was fantastic,” said Counc. Sandy Santori. “We want people to remember this weekend and I think they

will.”Saturday kicked off with

the hour-long parade that featured people lining the streets from one end of the route to the other.

As the parade ended, the crowd spilled into the midway and the Cominco Arena. The rink not only featured a plethora of tasty treats but entertainment ranging from a one-man band to the Crowe jazz band to the crooning of Norm Worsfold to performances by the Steps Dancers.

Of course the high-light for all was the Utterly

Unflappable Grape Stomp.With representatives

from Area A, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale, Rossland, the RCMP and the host Trail team, the con-testants got into the spirit of

things with a variety of cos-tumes including matching red satin boxers for Trail’s Mayor Mike Martin and Coun. Sandy Santori.

In the end, the crown went to the RCMP tandem

of Sgt. Darren Oelke and Cpl. Darryl Orr.

“I think they saved a lot of rotten grapes for us and made it easy,” said Oelke. “A Grape time was had by all.”

The adults weren’t done playing as a soldout crowd enjoyed an evening of music and dancing to the beat of Gary and Flashbacks, which capped off a fun-filled day in the Cominco Arena.

Not to be out-done, the night lit up as the Trail Firefighters’ Fireworks Show, with the illuminated Victoria St. bridge serving as a backdrop, brought a vibrant and climactic end to a day that had something for everyone.

Hundreds of Silver City Days rev-ellers wound up the five-day event by flocking to Gyro Park on Sunday for a fun-filled day of festivities.

The Gericks Sports Fun Run started the day bright and early with close to 300 participants running or walking the five and 10-km course through Sunningdale, East Trail, and downtown before finishing at Gyro.

Family Day festivites followed up the Fun Run with live music and re-freshments that included a barbecue put on by School District 20 PAC and Cops for Kids dishing up ice cream cones. The Boys Cubs and Scouts

built a log bridge for youngster to climb on, the Greater Trail cadets gave youngsters access to their flight simulator, young riders enjoyed a free mountain bike clinic, and much more.

The West Coat Lumberjacks topped the day off with three full shows of entertainment courtesy of Scott Weatherford and ATCO Wood Products. Darren Dean, his emcee, and fearless crew of loggers combined daring skill with hokey fun. Each of the competitive lumberjack events, from axe throwing and tree climb-ing, chainsaw carving, log rolling, and jousting over a pool of water, was rife with witty banter that left the audience happily entertained.

With B.C. fire season off to an early start, the Southeast Fire Centre is reminding communities and indi-viduals to do their part to help protect homes, resources and infrastructure from wildfire threats.

People with properties adjacent to forest or grassland need to be aware that they are at risk from damage by wildfire, according the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

The BCWS recommends property owners start with a general yard cleanup, such as removing needles, branches and underbrush that could fuel a fire. Long grass should be cut, low-level branches pruned and bark mulch with gravel or decorative rock, replaced.

For those choosing to burn yard waste, rules do apply but vary de-pending upon the community.

“First, we encourage people to phone their municipality to find out if they can burn,” says regional fire chief Terry Martin. “And if you are able to burn, do so following the rules and regulations set forth in your local municipality.”

Before lighting the match, Martin

asks people to check in with the fire department on its non-emergency line.

“We’ve had people burning slash piles locally but they’ve done so through the Southeast Fire Centre and have a registration number,” he explained. “We ask they do contact us with that registration number so we know what’s going on and do not send out our firefighters,” he added. “Because people are very concerned when they see smoke and they will call and report.”

So far, the year’s been quiet within local municipalities and open fires, campfires and forest use is unrestricted in the outlying areas governed by the centre.

However, a look at the five-year southeast trend shows an ever increas-ing number of wildfires beginning in 2011. That year, 132 fires burned 62 hectares in the district, and cost about $2.7 million to extinguish. The following year, almost double the fires impacted 1,500 hectares and cost over $8.5 million to battle.

Statistics only become more dire, with 2015 having the highest num-ber of wildfires, 577, burning over 14,000 hectares costing almost $32 million to fight.

Of those fires, over half were

people-caused.Fire Information Fanny Bernard

reminds the public that flames can escape quickly so it’s crucial to always be in arms reach of the campfire.

“I think it’s really important for people to know that when they have a campfire, unattended means you are leaving the area for any amount of time,” she said in a previous Trail Times interview. “That means turn-ing in for the night, fishing for a few hours or going on a quick hike. If you are leaving for any amount of time, the fire has to be put out.”

Ashes have to be cool to the touch, which means at least eight litres of water need to be on hand along with a hand tool such as a shovel, to stir the cinders and ensure water soaks deep enough to completely extin-guish the fire.

“People are surprised how quickly a fire can spark and how quickly the wind can carry it to combustible material,” said Bernard. “That’s why site selection is important and also, if it’s windy enough to carry embers or sparks, then it’s not a good day for a campfire.”

She encourages anyone who sees smoke to report it, and don’t assume someone else has called.

Cannings tables first pieces of legislationSUBMITTED

Black Press

OTTAWA – Richard Cannings, MP for South Okanagan-West Kootenay, announced last week that he has tabled his first three pieces of Private Members Legislation in the House of Commons.

Cannings tabled Motion M-50, which calls on the Federal government to establish a Department of Peace; Motion M-51, which calls on the Federal government to apologize to Canada’s British Home Children, along with their

families and descendants; and Motion M-52, which calls on the government to introduce mandatory labeling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified. Motions M-50 and M-51 were introduced in previous Parliaments by Cannings’ predecessor Alex Atamanenko.

“I am happy to intro-duce both of these im-portant motions,” said Cannings.

Motion M-50 calls on the Federal government to establish a Department of Peace as part of the struc-

ture of the federal govern-ment and Cabinet with a mandate to advocate for the non-violent resolu-tion of conflict at home and abroad.

Motion M-51 calls on the Federal government to apologize to Canada’s British Home Children.

From the late 1860s to 1939, approximately 100,000 children were sent from the United Kingdom to Canada to be used as indentured farm workers and domestics. Believed by Canadians to be orphans, approximately only two percent actually were.

Growing trees a good strategy for climate change

Disagreements persist on the extent of humanity’s role in the current changes to B.C.’s climate, and our ability to in-fluence it, as many readers have told

me in the past week. But almost everyone seems to agree that grow-

ing more and healthier forests is a good strategy. I would add that harvesting and building with wood preserves its captured carbon, a fact not much discussed in emotional appeals against logging.

The B.C. government is finally spending some money on community fuel load removal proj-ects this year, after an initial flurry following the Kelowna fires of 2003 faded in hard times. But the effects of decades of fire suppression in a fire-dependent forest system remain, as northern B.C. and Alberta are showing us again.

There is some positive news here. A Victoria-based government research team has published a study that calculates B.C.’s pine beetle-damaged for-ests are regenerating more quickly than expected.

Warmer temperatures, increased precipitation and the “fertilizer effect” of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are factors.

“By 2020, the enhanced growth due to climate change and increased CO2 more than compen-sates for the carbon loss from dead, rotting trees,” said lead researcher Vivek Arora of the Canadian Centre for Modeling and Analysis.

This recovery even overcomes the projected increase in forest fire loss that comes with gradu-ally increasing temperatures and drier periods.

The federal government is still working on its plan to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets agreed to in Paris last year. But the forest industry has stepped up with its own goal.

I spoke last week with Derek Nighbor, president of the Forest Products Association of Canada, after he announced his industry’s “30 by 30 Climate Change Challenge.”

That’s a goal to reduce the industry’s net carbon emissions by 30 megatonnes a year by 2030. That would be 13 per cent of the Canadian government emission target.

One of the main strategies is salvage harvesting and developing more products that use wood.

“It’s basically trying to use every part of the tree,” Nighbor said. “In forest operations right now, this is where we see a big part of the opportunity. Instead

of the residual branches and whatnot just being left aside and slashing and burning, bring more of that out and turn it into something.”

That something might be a console in a luxury car constructed with wood fibre, or an 18-storey wood student residence building planned for the University of B.C.

The other is improving forest growth. Logging operations have long been required to replant areas they cut, not just in B.C. but across Canada.

Another way to improve forest carbon capture is with more productive species, with genetic tech-niques that increase resiliency as well as wood mass.

A background paper from the B.C. forests ministry responds to common misconceptions about forest carbon, including the idea that logging should be stopped to maximize storage.

“Maximizing carbon storage in the ecosystem would make sense only if society stopped building new homes, acquiring new furniture and consum-ing in general,” it says.

“If the flow of forest products stops, society will turn to other products with higher greenhouse gas footprints, e.g. plastics, metal or concrete. In addition, if harvesting stopped and we continued to suppress natural disturbances, there is increased potential for larger catastrophic disturbances in the future.”

If Canada wants to make a bigger contribution to reducing greenhouse gases, forests are a good area to focus on. At 348 million hectares from the B.C. coast to Newfoundland, they represent nine per cent of the world’s forests.

Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

NEW YORK — If Phil Dunphy’s insistence that he’s a Realtor and not a real estate agent on “Modern Family” this week seemed a little odd, be aware that ABC was paid to make that distinction.

The plot twist was part of a new advertising cam-paign by the National Association of Realtors. At a time of fear among advertisers that their messages are getting lost, it represents a tactic beyond the casual product placement of a soda can or car in the back-ground of a television scene.

In the episode that aired Wednesday, the Dunphy character twice makes the point that he’s a Realtor. Dunphy wins a battle with Gloria Pritchett’s nemesis by confronting her with insider knowledge gleaned from his profession: that there’s been illegal construc-tion on the woman’s property, and her grandson is attending an out-of-district school.

At the show’s end, Dunphy straightens an “R” in-signia pinned to his suit jacket.

The Realtors are touting their services over licensed agents who are not members of their association, and trying to counter a trend where more consumers are doing their own real estate research to avoid paying fees, said Elizabeth Mendenhall, incoming president of the association.

With Dunphy, portrayed by actor Ty Burrell, the group sensed an opportunity: a main character on one of television’s most popular comedies who sells real estate.

Neither Mendenhall nor ABC would say how much the association paid ABC for the placement. The campaign also includes more traditional ads featuring Burrell’s character that premiered during two other ABC sitcoms Wednesday.

Burrell said there’s always some nervousness when advertising intrudes on the creative process. But he said he trusted the “Modern Family” executive producers, who signed off on the use and wrote the scenes. “Their sense of caretaking for the show is very high,” he said.

The Realtors were given the chance to review what was written before the show aired, ABC said.

Mendenhall said the Realtors were not nervous about having their message carried by a character who, while likable, is often portrayed as bumbling and clueless. The Realtors want to convey that their members are just like anyone else in a community.

The other Clinton presidency

Shortly before John Kasich dropped out of the race for the Republican presiden-tial nomination, leaving

Donald Trump as the only can-didate, the Ohio governor put up a spoof video on the internet. Modeled on the old-fashioned intro that scrolls up the screen at the start of each Star Wars movie, it envisioned a future in which Trump won the candidacy, lost the presidential election, and left Hillary Clinton triumphant.

Titled “Our Only Hope”, Kasich’s video began: “Upon defeating Donald Trump in the largest landslide since Reagan in 1984, President Hillary Clinton is preparing to name her newest Supreme Court justice, Elizabeth Warren. (House) Speaker Nancy Pelosi is planning new tax hikes, hoping that Senate President Chuck Schumer and his new Democratic majority can swiftly get it to the President’s desk for her signature.”

“New executive orders restrict-ing the Second Amendment are being drafted while increased federal spending on Obamacare is readied. Meanwhile, our allies across the world are swiftly losing faith in America’s role as a global leader, empowering our enemies and leaving America in a more dangerous position. But we have hope it can be different…”

It was a roll-call of all the night-marish things that Republicans fear a Clinton presidency would do: create a “liberal” majority on the Supreme Court, raise taxes, bring in gun control, and spend more money on health care for poor Americans. Kasich, of course, was the “Only Hope” to prevent this disaster. (It was his video, after all.)

If Kasich didn’t get the Republican nomination, accord-ing to the video, then Trump would win it, but then lose the national election and put Hillary Clinton into the presidency. That would be followed shortly by drag-ons, plagues and strange portents

in the sky, leading to the full-on End Times during her second year in office.

Well, Kasich is out of the race, Trump will get the Republican nomination, and Clinton will win the presidency by a landslide, just like the video says. Not only that, but the Democrats really may win control of both houses of Congress.

Hillary Clinton probably will create a liberal majority on the Supreme Court, tax the rich a bit more, and expand the Affordable Care Act (what Republicans call “Obamacare”). She probably will tackle gun control, too, although you should not hold your breath while awaiting a positive result.

She will certainly push on with Obama’s intiatives on climate change and add to them. (She talks about wanting “half a billion more solar panels deployed in the first four years.”) But will she do anything genuinely surprising? It would be astounding if she did. Hillary Clinton is “a safe pair of hands,” not a radical.

On foreign policy, she belongs to the “Washington consensus”, so she is suspicious of Russia and Iran, reflexively pro-Israel, and uncertain what to do about China. She resents the fact that people still bring up her vote in support of George W Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003, but it does highlight her inability to think outside the

box that the rest of the consensus is trapped in at any given time.

She takes the standard liberal positions on practically every do-mestic issue from gay marriage and abortion (cautiously pro) to immigration (no mass deporta-tion of illegals). She has talked about the need to reform the rules on political campaign finances, but would have trouble in getting that through even a Democratic-controlled Congress (“the best Congress that money can buy”), and might just decide not to waste her political capital that way.

If all this makes Hillary Clinton sound like a profoundly unexcit-ing president, that would not bother her a bit. Nearly three decades of experience with the political game at the highest level has reinforced her natural ten-dency to think only in terms of in-cremental change, and her whole approach to politics is managerial, not transformational. She will not rock the boat.

This is perhaps not such a bad thing in a peacetime national lead-er – and the United States really is at peace, despite the small overseas military commtments that entail an occasional military casualty.

It is perhaps especially not a bad thing in the First Female President in American history, just as it was not a bad thing for her predecessor, the First Black President in US history. When you are setting a new precedent for who can hold the office, steady competence is a better advertise-ment for the new rules than high excitement.

It’s also the best way to assure a second term in office – which could also be within Hillary Clinton’s grasp if the Republican Party splits before either before or after the electoral debacle that, with Trump as its candidate, now seems almost certain. Although that would make her 77 at the end of her second term.

Nelson’s Dryden Hunt has been named the WHL’s player of the year.

Hunt is the first Moose Jaw Warriors player to be awarded the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy after a breakout season in which he led both the WHL and the CHL in goals with 58. He also finished second overall in WHL points with 116.

The 20-year-old led the Warriors with 36 multi-point games and scored six hat tricks, four of which came during a five-game span.

Hunt, who went undrafted in the NHL, was signed to an entry-level deal by the Florida Panthers in March. Hunt is the first native Kootenaian to be named WHL player of the year since the league was founded in 1967, al-though Sam Reinhart

won the award in 2014 while playing for the Kootenay Ice.

Hunt played the 2010-11 season with the Kootenay Ice Major Midget team and four games as an affiliate player for the Trail Smoke Eaters, before going on to playing almost four seasons with the Regina Pats. In 269 WHL games, Hunt scored 117 goals and collected 249 points and 190 minutes in penalties.

The West Kelowna Warriors won their first Western Canada Cup tro-phy with a 6-0 drubbing of Alberta’s Brooks Bandits on Saturday night in Estevan, Sask.

Warriors captain Kyle Marino fired a shot off the pad of Hughson in the first three minutes which kicked out to Bryan Basilico and the former Trail Smoke Eater banged it by Bandits goaltender Garrett Hughson for the eventual winner.

The title sends the Warriors on to the RBC Cup which begins next weekend in Lloydminster, AB.

The BCHL champs will play the host Bobcats Saturday in the tour-nament opener.

The Warriors went 3-1 in the round robin format in Estevan, then dominated Brooks from the opening face off to advance to the team’s first ever national junior A championship tournament.

Marino said it was important for his club to get the job done as quickly as possible and lock up the first berth to Lloydminster.

“I think it was huge,” Marino told the Kelowna Capital News. “It’s a lot of momentum, it gives that group a lot of confidence that we can beat a Brooks, we can show up against anybody. I think obviously a much-deserved break for us…just gotta keep going and playing hard.”

West Kelowna scored three times in the first period to lead the charge.

Just four minutes after Basilico’s

marker, a seeing eye point shot from Nick Rutigliano snaked its way past the goaltender Hughson for the 2-0 lead.

At 15:22, Garrett Forster redi-rected a puck off his skate and into the goal for the 3-0 edge as West Kelowna out-shot the Bandits by a 18-11 margin.

It wasn’t until the final five min-utes of the second period that the Warriors would score again, staving off a pushback from the Bandits on the shot clock. With the Warriors on one of their 14 power plays, Marino buried one to make it 4-0.

In the third, Kylar Hope tucked home a wrap-around goal, his spe-cialty to make it 5-0, before Jared Marino scored on a late power play to make it 6-0.

Brooks went undefeated in the round robin, but would take 60 minutes in penalties in the game, including the final eight times short handed.

Keelan Williams picked up the shutout and had a sparkling tournament since coming in for the injured Matthew Greenfield. Williams made 32 saves, raising his WCC save percentage to .963, and lowering his GAA to 0.96.

Brooks beat the defending RBC Cup champion Portage Terriers 2-1 on Sunday to advance to Lloydminster along with the Warriors.

On Thursday, Warriors forward Brett Mennear was named to the tournament’s all-star team while also earning a share of the top scorer honours.

Montrose runner Mike Zahn captured his eighth straight five-kilometre win at the Fun Run.

Close to 300 run-ners participated in the Silver City Days Fun Run on Sunday, a record number of reg-istrants for the annual event.

Record turnout for Fun RunJIM BAILEY

Trail Times

The Silver City Days Gericks Sports Fun Run welcomed a record number of participants to the start-ing line at Gyro Park on Sunday.

Under sunny skies, 299 runners and walkers registered for the race that wound through Sunningdale and back to Gyro for the five-kilo-metre run and continued into East Trail and downtown Trail and back to the park for the 10-km race.

“That’s a record for registra-tions,” said organizer Dan Horan. “It was a good turnout, and a good day too.”

In the end, a familiar list of runners topped the podium. Mike Zahn won the men’s five-km race in a time of 19 minutes and 32 seconds, while teenager Abbegale Teasdale claimed top spot in the women’s five-km race in 21:40. Heather Johnson of Fruitvale cap-

tured the women’s 10-km race in 42:47, and Rossland’s Dallas Cain took almost a full minute off last year’s winning time by captur-ing the men’s 10-k in 36:42. His brother, Ryan, deferred to Dallas in the last few metres, as both were running side-by-side coming to the finish line.

“We had a gentleman’s agree-ment, we always do,” said Dallas following the race. “If there’s an opportunity then it’s open game. If someone gets out in front, then the other guy is more than welcome to go. But if we both end up right around the same area for the last kilometre or two, then we usually finish together.”

The win was a repeat-victory for Cain, and Johnson returned to the race to reclaim her 2014 title. Zahn, meanwhile, won his eighth straight race an unprecedented run for the Teck employee whose workout regimen started in March

where he’d run from Walmart up the cutoff to his home in Montrose.

“My goal is just to try to main-tain a good time,” said the 32-year-old Zahn, whose only race of the season he usually reserves for the Fun Run, although this year he par-ticipated in the Dam Run in April.

Cain and Johnson are both high-level athletes. Cain has competed in Iron-man triathlons for a num-ber of years and will return this year to compete in the Penticton Ironman Triathlon, while Johnson is an ultra-marathoner and Trans-Rockies Run competitor - a six-day marathon that covers 120 miles. Teasdale from Rossland is a 12-15 age-group runner who qualified to compete in the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford in July.

Marcella Zahn won the $200 gift certificate from Gericks in the special draw for early registration.

Joe Biagini always envisioned himself pitching at San Francisco’s AT&T Park while wearing a Giants uniform.

He’ll get the chance to fulfil at least half of that dream over the next few days.

Biagini, a former San Francisco draft pick and cur-rent Blue Jays rookie reliever, grew up less than 70 kilometres from the Giants’ home ballpark, where his new team starts a three-game interleague series on Monday.

Sitting in the tunnel between the Blue Jays dugout and clubhouse at Rogers Centre last week, Biagini, who’s quickly becoming known for his quirky personal-ity, turned serious when asked about going back home.

“My whole idea of baseball was very much con-structed by the Giants and AT&T Park,” Biagini said. “Getting drafted by the Giants, the hope was I’d play there one day.

“Ironically I’m now about as far away from there as you can get, but I’ll hopefully get to pitch (in the series) and I’m excited about that.”

Toronto snatched the 25-year-old right-hander from San Francisco in December’s Rule 5 draft and put him on the big league roster out of spring training even though he’d never pitched above double-A.

In the Rule 5, the drafting team pays $50,000 for each selected player. If that player is taken off his new team’s 25-man roster at any point in the season, the old team can buy him back at half that price.

While Biagini stressed how happy he is to be with Toronto now - “the Rule 5 thing worked out pretty well for me” - he admits his time with the Giants was sentimental.

Biagini’s father, Rob, played two seasons in the San Francisco organization in the 1980’s before settling in the area to raise his family with his wife, Michele.

Both will be at AT&T Park this week, just as they were in Dunedin, Fla., to see Joe’s first spring training games as a Blue Jay, and at Rogers Centre on April 8 for his major league debut.

“My dad’s a huge Giants fan so he might not be rooting for me,” Biagini joked. “But no, I’m really close with him and that’s another facet to this whole experience, having him see me play at the park he used to take me to when I was younger.

“I hope he’s not too distracted. Hopefully there aren’t too many seagulls flying around so he can focus.”

Asked how many friends will make the short trip from the Sunnyvale, Calif., area to the ballpark, Biagini couldn’t give a straight answer.

“I’ve burned a lot of bridges in my time so I don’t know how many will show up,” he snarked. “But yeah, I’ve gotten a few messages from friends, people from church, people from high school and college, homeless people I’ve made friends with over the years.”

Scott Efting, Biagini’s Grade 8 gym teacher, will be

there for Wednesday’s game while Stephanie Kellner, the scorekeeper for his high school team, is hoping to make the trip.

Joe Maemone, the athletic director at Biagini’s high school, isn’t going but said it’s been “an absolute thrill” to watch the former King’s Academy student on TV.

“In high school, Joey would have been considered a long shot to make it to the major leagues,” Maemone said. “He was tall, lanky, not very strong, and quite hon-estly just an above average high school player. Shows you what faith, hard work, and perseverance can do.”

“It’s very cool that he worked so hard and followed his dreams to make it,” added Efting.

Kellner remembers Biagini’s oddball personality more than anything.

“He was then as he is now: quirky, quick-witted and self-deprecating,” she said. “He kept things light with his timely humour.”

Biagini held back his jokes while reminiscing about AT&T Park.

He doesn’t have a favourite memory of the stadium - not yet at least - but he does remember the crisp, cool air, the view of the bay, and the people.

“When that stadium first opened I was really excited about going there because I thought it was a really cool place to watch a game,” he said.

“Hopefully it is to play a game as well.”

Canada shuts out BelarusASSOCIATED

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Canada won its third straight game at the hockey world champion-ship on Monday, routing Belarus 8-0 with seven dif-ferent players scoring.

Canada leads Group B with nine points and has scored 20 goals in its three games, including a 5-1 win over the United States.

With patriotic Soviet songs playing in the arena to mark the anniversary of beating the Nazis in World War II, Canada got two goals from Ryan O’Reilly, one of them while short-handed.

“It was a competitive game, especially early on,” Canada coach Bill Peters said. “That short-handed goal was a bit of a game-

changer. They were very competitive and in the end, I think our depth is what wore them down.”

Cam Talbot faced only 13 shots for Canada’s first shut-out of the championship.

In Moscow, host team Russia beat Latvia 4-0 on two goals and two assists from Chicago Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin, who bounced back after he was pulled from Sunday’s

game against Kazakhstan following a hard collision into the boards.

Montreal Canadiens de-fenceman Alexei Yemelin faces a minimum one-game suspension after he was ejected for a knee on Miks Indrasis.

Russia is 2-1 after an opening 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic and the tricky 6-4 win over Kazakhstan.

EDMONTON - He saved precious hockey memo-rabilia from the flames, but one of Canada’s biggest sports collectors says the Fort McMurray fire may have cost him his hobby.

“I don’t know that collecting means as much to me anymore,” said Shawn Chaulk, who was once referred to as the Wayne Gretzky of Wayne Gretzky collectors.

Chaulk’s collection is prodigious. It includes dozens of game-worn jerseys and sticks,

some worth up to $20,000. He has more than 100 Gretzky sticks from one used in the 1978 world junior tournament to one used in Gretzky’s last game with the New York Rangers in 1999.

The list includes gloves and helmets worn during Stanley Cup victories and regular-season games, skates replete with scuffs and repairs and replica Stanley Cups once owned by former Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, who is still reviled by some Oilers fans for trading Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988.

The situation put a whole new meaning on the question: What would you take if your home were on fire?

As his wife and children threw clothes and toys into suitcases last Tuesday during Fort McMurray’s evacuation, Chaulk was downstairs with an associate trying to figure that one out.

The choices were tough.“The No. 1 collectible I took out of there was

Gretzky’s ‘84 Canada Cup jersey worn in the cup-winning game. And his stick.”

Chaulk decided to focus on jerseys, including three Mark Messier Team Canada jerseys.

“They’re liquid and we could need the money to rebuild.”

Eventually, the family left with about 50 jerseys and four Gretzky sticks Chaulk has willed to his children. They drained fuel from their lawnmower to get as much gas in the car as possible and fled north.

Chaulk said their home appears to have escaped the flames. His family is fine, as far as he can tell.

The family will rebuild and move on, but Chaulk’s not so sure about the hobby he once loved.

“I’m not sure if I’m in the same frame of mind. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I’m just emotional. I don’t know if I need to even focus on that anymore.

“Every hour that I put into collecting I take away from my family.”

‘Captain America: Civil War’ nabs fifth best-opening ever

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES — What superhero fatigue? Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has strong-armed its way to becoming the fifth-highest domestic opening ever according to comScore estimates Sunday.

The film grossed a massive $181.8 million this weekend, bumping “Iron Man 3” out of the top five all time debuts. “Civil War” now ranks right below “Marvel’s The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which hold the third and fourth place spots.

It’s nearly double the opening of the previous “Captain America” film, “The Winter Soldier,” which opened to $95 million in April 2014, but that is at least partially attributable to the fact that “Civil War” is basically an Avengers movie in disguise.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Civil War” sees an ideological showdown between Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) and is packed to the brim with Avengers old and new. It’s been very well-received by critics and, now, audiences, who gave the film a promising “A” CinemaScore, which should bode well for the film’s longevity. Audiences were 59 per cent male and mostly adults. Teens made up only 11 per cent of the audience.

After a $75 million first day, the opening was right in line with expectations, and according to comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, is well on its way to becoming a $1 billion movie.

“We’ve become so accustomed to these massive numbers, now we’re putting up single day numbers that would be very noteworthy opening weekends on their own,” Dergarabedian said.

“Civil War” cost a hefty $250 million to produce but has already far-surpassed that thanks to a healthy international debut last weekend and a big bump from China this weekend. In sum, the superhero showdown has earned $678.4 million globally to date.

Great reviews and word of mouth will surely dis-tinguish “Civil War” from “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which, by comparison, opened to $166 million in late March but fell sharply over the subsequent weekends.

As is to be expected when there’s only one new wide release, the rest of films on the box office charts looked paltry in comparison. The only big change was that “Civil War” effectively ended the three week first-place run of Disney’s “The Jungle Book” which came in second with $21.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $285 million.

Alex Trebek says Canadians may again be eligible to apply to be on Jeopardy

THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Game show host Alex Trebek says it looks as if Canadians will soon be able to apply to compete on Jeopardy again.

Trebek, who has presided over the quiz show for more than 30 years, is in Ottawa to receive the key to the city and met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau briefly.

The prime minister has praised Trebek’s financial contributions to the University of Ottawa.

The two also discussed a return of Canadians to Trebek’s popular show.

Changes in Canada’s digital privacy laws last year caused problems over Internet applications, but Trebek says they are being ironed out.

Trudeau suggested the host had worked out a fix for the problem.

“I’m sure you’ve been grilled on that,” Trudeau said.“Well yes, because everyone blames us and I keep

turning it around and saying ….”Trudeau interrupted: “You’re blaming me instead.”“Well not quite,” Trebek said, adding that he has

been told a solution is in the works. The show’s website says it cannot accept registration

information from Canadians but “we are currently evaluating this matter.”

Trebek was born in Sudbury, but attended uni-versity in Ottawa.

Early in his career, he hosted a number of CBC television programs, including the high school quiz show Reach for the Top.

He moved to the United States in the 1970s and became an American citizen in 1998.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who presented the key to the city to Trebek, said he was being honoured for his “philanthropy and activism, his unrelenting commitment to higher education and his steadfast loyalty to his alma mater, the University of Ottawa.”

TODAY’S CROSSWORD

LEISURE

Dear Annie: What is the polite thing to do with a guest who carries a gun?

I do not like guns in my house, but I have a friend who adamantly refuses to leave his gun at home when he comes here. Do people who carry a concealed weapon have an obliga-tion to notify the host before enter-ing their residence? -- Pennsylvania

Dear Pennsylvania: Yes. More importantly, it’s your house. You get to set the rules, and if you don’t want guns, say so. You can’t force him to be honest about having a concealed weapon, but you certainly can inform him of your preferences.

If your friend won’t leave home without his gun, you can ask him to put it in a drawer, cabinet or closet that you can lock. If he insists on wearing it in your house when you have asked him not to, we’d politely tell him to leave. If he says he won’t visit anymore unless he can bring his gun, regretfully say that you’ll miss him. People who are guests in your home should be respectful of their

hosts.Dear Annie: I would like to share

some additional thoughts in regard to the letter from “Befuddled Grandma,” whose grandchild has a food allergy, and who was unable to buy treats for her other, allergy-free, grandchild.

We have a young grandchild with a life threatening milk allergy. According to Food Allergy Research and Education, 1 in 13 children has a food allergy. Unfortunately, many people do not know about or under-stand the seriousness of an allergic reaction. It can be more than itchy hives or an upset stomach. In our case, my grandchild can go into anaphylactic shock, which can lead to death.

It is stressful for families. Reading food labels is a must, as allergens can crop up in unexpected places. There is often cross-contamination in pro-cessed foods, and in food prepara-tion in homes and restaurants. It is not required by law for food com-

panies to disclose if multiple foods are processed on shared equipment.

Sensit ivity and understanding are tre-mendously appreciated by those dealing with a serious food allergy. Inclusion is important so that children are not

made to feel left out when so many activities involve food. Perhaps schools (and others) will consider eliminating food treats altogether and choose some other “reward.” You often don’t know that a child has a food allergy until there is a first-time reaction, which can result in an unexpected life-threatening situation.

For more information, please tell your readers to look at foodallergy.org. The website covers such topics as food culprits, treatment of reac-tions, how to manage allergies, foods and their ingredients, and alerts. We can all help. -- Concerned Food Allergy Advocate

Dear Concerned: People often

think food allergies are minor, or worse, optional. They think it’s silly to have to cater to all of these food issues, and we hope your letter will open their eyes. We especially like your idea of nonfood prizes and treats, not only because it eliminates the danger of anaphylaxis, but also

because it helps re-program kids to stop rewarding themselves with unhealthy, high-calorie edibles.

SILVER CITY DAYS

From the parade, to the midway to the crowds that packed the Cominco Arena for the Sidewalk Cafe, the Greater Trail community came out in droves to celebrate Silver City Days.
