Barriers

Wind loading requirements for Unattended (Class B) is 17.6m/s (40mph) Attended works (Class C) is 8.7m/s (19.6mph)

Page 93

Unattended Works

From (date) either the individual barrier or the group of barriers as erected should be capable of withstanding the wind force resulting from winds of Class B (17.6m/s) blowing from any direction.

Barriers must be joined in a way that resists tampering; if through visits or in any other way, you fi nd that barriers are being tampered with and separated, then you must take additional measures to secure the barriers for example, the use of clamps or ties that require a tool for removal.

Attended Works

From (date) either the individual barrier or the group of barriers as erected should be capable of withstanding the wind force resulting from winds of Class C (8.7m/s) blowing from any direction.

Page 24

Where a work site may be approached by pedestrians crossing the road from the opposite side, you should place barriers all around the excavation, even when pedestrians are not diverted into the carriageway.

Most barriers are designed to be put up as part of a system; if they are not properly erected, they will not be suffi ciently stable and could be blown or knocked over. You must follow the manufacturer’s instructions when erecting barriers.

Page 25

If an unattended site contains an open excavation that is within 2 metres of a temporary or permanent footway, then you should either:

Put temporary covers over the excavation or provide an enhanced barrier around the excavation (Strongfence/ Endurafence) (Safecover/Low Pro)

Footway Boards

Page 26

Footway Boards should only be used on footways to maintain foot and light vehicle access during excavation works.

Footway Boards used for bridging excavations:

– Must provide at least 1.2 metres width for pedestrians, but preferably 1.5 metres;

– Must be strong enough to support pedestrians and light vehicles;

– Must be made from material which is unlikely to become distorted;

– Where used for light vehicles the boards must be capable of supporting the added load;

– Where used on a vehicle crossover the whole width of the crossover must be boarded with a minimum width of 2.5m;

– The edges of the footway boards must be chamfered to prevent tripping;

– Should have a slip resistant surface;

– The sides of the excavation should be stable or suitably supported under the board;

– The board should be rigidly fi xed with suffi cient length beyond the excavation to provide the necessary support

– The edges of the footway boards adjacent to the excavation should be fenced to prevent falls
