Traffic Safety Bulletin October 2018 Over the last five years (2013-2017), 13,263 crashes involving pedestrians have occurred on Ohio roadways, an average of 2,653 per year. Pedestrian-involved crashes increased every year during this period. In fact, 18% more crashes were reported in 2017 than were reported in 2013. Over the 5 years, pedestrian-involved crashes resulted in the deaths of 584 pedestrians. In addition, 12,333 pedestrians were injured in these crashes. An action on the part of the pedestrian was a contributing factor in 46% of crashes. Specifically, improper crossing was the cause of 19% of all pedestrian-involved crashes. Two-thirds (67%) of fatal crashes were caused by the pedestrian. Again, improper crossing was the leading reason with 26%. Pedestrian-Involved Crashes Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic as far away from traffic as possible. Be predictable by obeying signs and signals. Keep alert at all times. Don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off of the road. Further, avoid alcohol and drugs which impair your abilities and judgement. Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night. Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact as they approach to be sure you are seen.
