BEIJING, 19 Feb — It’s been 40 million years sinceAntarctic waters were warm enough for sharks to lurkaround and feed on polar prey, but rising oceantemperatures from global warming could eventuallybring the toothy predators back, media reportedTuesday quoting scientists as saying.

If sharks reenter Antarctic waters, the entire polarecosystem will be severely altered, with the ferociouspredators easily preying on a wide assortment ofslow-moving, soft-bodied organisms that dominatethe sea floor of the cold-water environment, saidCheryl Wilga, an associate professor of biomechanicsat the evolution at University of Rhode Island.

“Sharks and crabs are the biggest predators ofbenthic [bottom dwelling] invertebrates and the entireenvironment will change,” Wilga said.

Sharks generally thrive in warm, tropical watersand have a high metabolic rate because they mustswim constantly to aerate their gills. —Internet

Set up Myanmar Green hotelsChit Swe Myint

Tourism and hotels are interrelated with each

other. Tourism reflects a combination of hotels and

accommodations, restaurants, vehicles, culture of

human beings, and environmental conservation, and

their sustainable progress. Hotels and

accommodations provide services for tourists.

Economic processes, which contribute

towards the economy and incomes of a region,

country, place and people, gain benefits in

proportion to services provided for tourists. Due to

the interrelation, man sometimes views tourism

and hotels separately, combines them, and is

confused about them, depending on the sector

concerned, individual opinion, and services because

it seems that man considers travel agents’ service to

be tourism. Tourism is, in fact, just tourism, not a

hotel, travel agent, restaurant, vehicle, or

entertainment with culture of the region concerned

and modern culture.

Anyhow, accommodation is indispensable for

tourism. It should provide enough accommodation

for more than 700 million tourists travelling around

the world yearly. We sometimes give an offer to our

guests to put up at home in accordance with Myanmar

traditions. However, there may be some difficulties on

both sides, so people think of staying in a hotel or a

lodging house if they can afford.

India has a large area and is rich in fine traditions,

culture and natural resources. When it laid down a

strategy to promote its tourism, it noticed that it could

not provide enough accommodation for expected

number of tourists. Moreover, it was not in a position

to provide more accommodation due to its dense

population.

So, it is required to build various forms of hotels

and accommodations for various sorts of tourist

destinations and tourists, such as hotel, motel, inn,

resort, hostel, transient hotel, lodge, guest house, B &

B, time share, and home stay.

ASEAN countries are in the list of famous

tourist destinations, attracting about 10 per cent of the

total number of tourists from around the world. Leaders

of the ASEAN countries are now seeking better ways

to lure a greater number of tourists to their countries,

and coordinating among themselves to shape the whole

ASEAN region into an ASEAN Single Destination. In

addition, an agreement has been reached to establish

an ASEAN Economic Community. Based on the

programmes, leaders of the ASEAN Tourism

Industry sought means to standardize norms in

tourism. In that regard, they set up ASEAN Tourism

Standards. The process mainly includes status and

standards of hotels.

The standard of hotels that is necessary for

tourism standard is designated as green hotel. In a

bid to establish a Single Destination to attract a

growing number of tourists to ASEAN, the term

“Green Hotel” was laid down not only to improve

the standards of hotels in the region but also to make

them attractive. The best ones of the hotels and

resorts in various countries that won +ve in previous

years were presented Green Hotel Award at the 11th

ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting in Bangkok,

Thailand, on 22 January 2008. The Ministry of

Hotels and Tourism of Myanmar nominated ten of

the hotels and resorts in Yangon, Ngapali, Kalaw,

Inlay, Bagan and Ngwehsaung regions.

Tourism industry will be thriving for long. In

the 21st Century, the world started to see shortage of

fuel including oil, so the countries are thinking of

possible problems. So, the tourism world places

emphasis on environmental conservation for

sustainable tourism. Tourism will be thriving for

ever. Even if the world sees significant development

of science, people will make space trips.

Rich natural resources alone are not enough

for development of the tourism industry. It is also

needed to fulfil the requirements of people with

various forms of services innovated by man.

I would like to urge hoteliers to upgrade their

hotels, motels and resorts to ones that meet the

standards of a green hotel.

Torres defends Benitez’srotation policy

LONDON, 20 Feb — Liverpool strikerFernando Torres has defended managerRafael Benitez's squad rotation systemdespite the policy being blamed for theclub's poor season. The Premier Leagueclub's last chance of silverware this seasonrests with the Champions League, wherethey host Inter Milan on Tuesday in the firstleg of their last 16 clash.

"We have a manager with a philosophythat people knew before he came and onethat has succeeded," Torres, who has scored18 goals so far in his first season, told theTimes on Tuesday.

"It is very opportunistic to blame rota-tion for everything that goes wrong. It is nota problem for us. Liverpool have won aChampions League, FA Cup and so onwith rotation.

"It is normal to rest. We players neverwant to but if the manager says so, you haveto. If everybody accepts that is the wayforward the atmosphere doesn't suffer."

Benitez has come under increasing pres-sure this season with any title challengehaving disappeared long ago and a humili-ating FA Cup defeat at home to Barnsley onSaturday. —MNA/Reuters

Tourism industry will be thriving for long.

In the 21st Century, the world started to see

shortage of fuel including oil, so the countries

are thinking of possible problems. So, the

tourism world places emphasis on environ-

mental conservation for sustainable tourism.

Tourism will be thriving for ever. Even if the

world sees significant development of sci-

ence, people will make space trips.
