INTRODUCTION TO TRADE UNIONS

A trade union is an organization of workers that have banded together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions.

The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers.

The inability of the parties to reach an agreement may lead to industrial action, ending in either strike or  lockout, or binding arbitration.

Then collective bargaining is done so as to reach an agreement between the management and the employees .Strikes may be called if management is adamant , but the trade union would rather report it to the State Labour Commissioner at Mangalore for conciliation .
