WINTER 2013
Big savings from small changesJersey Electricity are successfullyreducing energy usage at ThePowerhouse (above) on Queen’s Road, with new regimes for air conditioningand lighting.
They have also begun a programme of installingenergy-saving LED lighting.
Early results indicate that making relatively smallchanges has resulted in significant savings.
Jersey Electricity Building Services (JEBS) recentlytook over responsibility for maintaining thebuilding, which includes a large retail spaceand two floors of office accommodation.
As part of this service JEBS Maintenance and
Service Manager Damion Harrison (right), anelectrical engineer with 20 years’ experience inthe building trade, has carried out an energyaudit and reports monthly to senior managerssuggesting energy savings.
Damion explained: ‘We have identified a rangeof energy-saving initiatives and several havealready been implemented, including revisingtime schedules and improving controls forheating, air conditioning and internal andexternal lighting.
‘The main office lighting has been restricted to50 per cent before 8am and after 5.30pm,’ hesaid. ‘Outside of those times staff have theoption of using additional task lighting in theform of desk lamps.’E

Revised forms to be available onlineJE have redesigned the applicationforms in respect of electricity supplies, meter connections and temporaryisolation, making them easier forcustomers to complete.
The forms will shortly be available for downloadin the Trade Allies section of the Company’swebsite (jec.co.uk).
The Electricity Supply Enquiry – known as ESE –covers the request for new services (permanentor temporary), services move and the applicationfor additional load/tariff change. Thisapplication leads to a service quotation (whenworks are required) or an acceptance/rejectionletter for additional load, service upgrade andtariff change.
The Connection of Meter is the second step afteran ESE when the connection or change of meteris required. It confirms the type of service, themeter tariff, the earth rod values (for temporary
supply) and indicate the requested date ofconnection.
The Temporary Isolation of Supply is a new form.It needs to be completed when works areundertaken on the consumer’s equipment andrequire the service to be dead.
The forms have been given a new look by JEPlanning Engineer Erwann Peu. ‘We wanted toensure consistency between the forms and alsoto make them more user-friendly,’ he explained.
Contact details for the Service PlanningEngineers and the New Installation Supervisorare also given on the forms, should applicantsrequire further assistance.
Electrical contractors and consultants arereminded to submit enquiry forms as soon aspossible, especially for new supplies, to discussthe scope of the works and the timescalerequired.
As well as a mass of useful information thereare now online forms that are easier to fill in,good-quality drawings to download and a callback can be requested at just the touch of abutton.
‘The new site, delivered by Webreality, hasbeen well received by our staff but it is verymuch a ”work in progress” and we would nowlike to hear feedback from members of thetrade,’ said Business Development ManagerNigel Ricou. ‘With 50% of people nowaccessing websites via a mobile device such as
a phone or a tablet it is vital that our site keepsapace of changing demand and we hope thattrade users will let us know if there is anythingthey would like to see changed or added.
‘We understand that we are one of the firstmajor Jersey websites to be “mobile responsive”so we are keen to learn if we have got it right orif we can make further improvements.’
If you would like to comment on the revampedwebsite – www.jec.co.uk/trade/ – you canreach Nigel at [email protected].

He emphasised that robust systems were inplace to ensure that this was a secure meansof payment, underpinned by a set of strictguarantees.

Jersey Electricity’s Derek Wood is thenew contact for members of the traderequesting the installation of newelectricity meters.
He has been appointed Metering and NewInstallations Supervisor and brings a wealth ofexperience to the role, as during his long careerwith JE he has worked both as an electrician andon the metering side of the business.
‘I’m the first point of contact for electricalcontractors who want metering fitted once supplyinquiries have been processed,’ he explained.‘I’m also the contact for supply interruption, where they want us to isolate the supply to aproperty for a period of time.’
It’s a role that Derek is familiar with, as hefulfilled it for around a decade when it was partof his responsibilities several years ago. ‘I usedto know most of the contractors quite well at thattime,’ he said.
Derek joined the Company in 1975 as anelectrician with the wiring department. The worktook him all over the Island to private houses andbusinesses. He then worked with JE’s BroadStreet showroom, installing appliances incustomers’ premises.
In 1990 he moved to the Metering side of thebusiness as an electrical inspector, which at thattime also included responsibility for accounts. Now Metering is part of the DistributionDepartment at La Collette and, as a supervisor,Derek organises the daily work schedule for JE’steam of metering technicians.
In recent years Derek has worked as JE’sRevenue Protection Officer, identifying electricitysupply problems from meter readings andensuring that customers are being billedcorrectly. This involves checking computeriseddata.
‘We are looking to see if there are problemswith meters or supplies,’ said Derek. As anexample he said that there would be concern ifa supply was to drop off quickly.
The job has given him an interesting insight intothe electricity usage of JE’s customers. ‘It’samazing how varied people’s lifestyles are whenit comes to economies and use of electricity,’ hesaid, adding that it was not unusual for identicalneighbouring houses to have quite differentelectricity bills depending on their approach tousage.
Through his work as an electrician and with themetering team he has got to know the Islandvery well, including remote areas, and he canpinpoint the location of more than 600 electricitysub-stations.
Outside of work Derek is a keen golfer and heand his wife, Helen, recently enjoyed amemorable holiday in South Africa, celebratinga friend’s 60th birthday, following the famedGarden Route. Wildlife spotting at a gamereserve proved to be one of the highlights of thetrip.
‘On the last day my friend, whose birthday itwas, and I went out despite the rain, and verysoon we had elephants on both side of the openjeep,’ said Derek, adding that it was anexperience he will never forget.

Tenders have just been evaluated forthe two cables – one on land, the otherundersea – and the reactors that willcomprise Jersey Electricity’s sections ofNormandie 3, the Island’s newinterconnector with France.
Contracts for the £66m project – already eightyears in the planning – are due to be signedshortly and it should be completed no later than2015 and possibly even next year.
Work on the 7km Jersey land cable, which willrun from Grouville Bay to South Hill, should startsoon and last for 15 months. In addition, work onthe 19km French land cable should also start thisyear – it is the responsibility of RTE, which as theoperator of Europe's biggest power grid, manages the connections between France and itsneighbours.
Senior Project Engineer Jeremy Willis (above) saidthat the contracts will go to the companies thatdemonstrate that they will provide the bestproducts and the best prices.
A team of senior engineers and managersevaluated the submissions, provided by a numberof multi-national companies.
Cost is a hugely determining factor on a projectof this size. Cable prices have increaseddramatically in recent years, with demand for
metals from the burgeoning Chinese marketboosting prices across the globe. Copper, forexample, $1,500 per tonne a few years ago,now fetches around $8,000 a tonne.
Jeremy also reported that French planningpermission for the cable has now been received.‘This is excellent news,’ he added, saying that theconsultants appointed to liaise with the Frenchauthorities had been very helpful.
Work on Normandie 3 to start shortly

New Energy Plan seeks to incentiviseswitch to low emission vehiclesAs more electric vehicles filter onto Jerseyforecourts, the States leads the way as alarge organisation when it comes toembracing low carbon transportation withthe acquisition of 10 all-electric PeugeotiOns.
A new consultation document ‘Pathway 2050: AnEnergy Plan For Jersey’ proposes a target of 80%reduction in overall CO2 emissions by 2050 andsuggests ‘more punitive’ charging bands of VehicleEmissions Duty are likely to further incentivise amove to low emission vehicles.
In addition, the plan proposes that by 2020 onlynew cars complying with EU standard of 95g/CO2
per kilometre and new commercial vans withaverage emissions of 147g/CO2 will be able toregister with the Driver and Vehicles Standards(DVS) for use in the Island.
The aim is 10% of new registered cars to be ultralow emission vehicles (ULEVs) by 2020 and 90%ULEVs by 2050. So fleet owners and smallcommercial vehicle owners would be well advisedto have an eye of the future and follow the exampleof the States and JE (whose EV fleet numbers eight).
One man who needs no persuading of the benefitsto business and the environment of electric vehicles(EVs) is Kevin Sharpe (above). The founder of LowCarbon World was in Jersey last month discussingtransport policy and the future of EVs in Jersey.
He arrived for an illustrated talk at the SociétéJersiaise in the most advanced electric car on themarket today, the Tesla Roadster, which goes from0-60mph in 3.7 secs, reaches 125mph and has arange of 245 miles on one charge.
Low Carbon World has donated hundreds of EVcharging points to businesses in the UK and Kevinhighlighted the benefits, particularly in touristdestinations, of tapping the growing market of theenvironmentally-conscious consumer.
With Europe well ahead of Jersey, he illustrated adrive across the Continent solely using free publicelectric charge points. He said Norway leads theway, with EVs now topping over 5% of the new carmarket thanks to a highly-developed charginginfrastructure and massive Government incentives, including no import taxes, free parking andallowing EVs to use bus lanes.
Here in Jersey things are moving in the rightdirection with the Nissan Leaf now available, theprice of the iOn reduced, Renault providing fourofferings, the long-awaited smart fortwo electricdrive (ED) launched this year and the plug-in hybridsVauxhall Ampera and Toyota Prius on show.
Public EV charging will be imminently available inten designated parking bays across five Town multi-storey car parks following agreement betweenJersey Electricity and TTS. JE is currently working oneasy home charging solutions.

WINTER 2013
Industry innovation for more than threequarters of a centuryThe invention of the first electrically-operated window ventilator in 1936was just the beginning of the Vent-Axiastory.
Since then, Vent-Axia innovation has been at theheart of many of the breakthroughs that haveshaped the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning industry we know today.
In 1961, for example, the company launchedthe Standard Range extractor fan, a designclassic still operating perfectly across the world. Then, in 1992, Vent-Axia introduced the world'sfirst SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) fan, creatingthe safety benchmark for ventilation in domesticshower and bathroom environments.
This story of firsts continued with the LuminAir in1994 – the original patented combination fanand light product, the LoWatt energy efficient,DC motored domestic range in 1997 and, in2003, the Air-Minder – a cutting edge whole-house ventilation system with an integral heatexchanger.
Nowadays Vent-Axia’s range of products coversnot just air movement, air handling andventilation technologies but heat recovery, electric heating, cooling and clean-air systemsfor residential, commercial, public sector andindustrial applications.
The first to introduce a low carbon range ofproducts, Vent-Axia’s aim is to make Lo-Carbon™ventilation mainstream in order to reduce
building energy consumption and carbonemissions.
The company’s innovative continuous ventilationrange and heat recovery technology is hugelyimportant to achieving this. Vent-Axia’s Centra,Quadra and the single room heat recoveryTempra are all designed to work with natural airinfiltration, controlling the air path from thebuilding and thus preventing migration ofdamaging humidity and pollutants.
By providing ventilation in this way theextract system can run at a muchlower rate all the time rather than ahigh rate for one or two hours aday. As a result there is no overventilation, so reducingunnecessary heat loss.
The company has also extendedits heating range which nowincludes electric underfloorheating, a comprehensive rangeof heated towel rails, a selectionof indoor and outdoor radiantheaters and the next generationof aluminium radiators (such asthe Opal, right).
This extended range allows Vent-Axia to deliver a complete heatingand ventilation solution, regardlessof the size or type of project.
COMPANY PROFILE: VENT-AXIA
Local biking enthusiasts who also carefor the environment can now achieveboth those aims thanks to theintroduction of electric motorcycles inthe Island.
CAF Engineering in Trinity are stocking the rangemanufactured by Californian company ZeroMotorcycles and CAF’s Tony Gadd and CharlesFossey were very impressed when they checkedout the electric motorcycles for themselves.
‘We flew off to Cambridge to test the bikes and, wow, what a revelation!’ said Tony, who rides a1,000cc Aprillia TRSV Mille and admits to beinga bit of a ‘petrolhead’. After inspecting threedifferent models he was more than impressed.
‘The Dual Sport and Sport are good-lookingbikes, with beautifully-crafted aircraft gradealuminium frames and nicely-proportionedbodywork, bearing in mind there is no engine toshow off and Kevlar-toothed drive belts replacethe normal chain and sprockets,’ he said.
They each took a bike for a test drive and rodeinto Cambridge town centre, quickly gettingused to the silence and absence of gears.
‘The bikes behaved impeccably,’ said Tony, ‘withsmooth acceleration and torque thanks to Zero’scomputer mapping of the power delivery, reallygood brakes and a very safe feeling from theframe and suspension giving perfect feedbackabout what the road surface was doingunderneath the tyres.’
He then swapped to the Sport model with roadtyres and a slightly lower seat height. ‘This bike
is a little gem,’ he said. ‘You can scrub off thespeed, crank it into a bend with no gears andloads of torque on tap and just wind on thepower. There's no feeling of the bike wanting tofall into corners due to over-quick steering – itholds its line, giving a confidence inspiring ride.’
They also tried the X model. ‘This is basically thesame as their motorcross bike but with road legalgear and slightly different gearing through thechain and sprockets,’ explained Tony, who hascompeted in enduros and motorcross. ‘I had theswitch on full power 50 metres up the road andwas doing stoppies and power wheelies.Awesome. How can an electric bike behave likethis? I loved it and would dearly liked to havegone and got it dirty, but circumstances didn’tallow. What a bike, truly inspiring.’
Tony told Trade Talk that Zero have nowintroduced their 2013 range with a 99 per centpower increase. Like the 2012 range the newmodels have an onboard charger, allowingriders to unroll the lead and plug it into a normalsocket when they have finished for the day. There’s a fast charge as an option, with acharge time of around an hour.
Having tested the bikes Tony is convinced thatthey are a good option for Jersey and suggestedthat anyone taking one out for a test drive should‘be prepared to be amazed’.
There will also be an opportunity to see one inaction at the JMCLCC Sprint at Le Braye on 23March. CAF have entered a 2012 Zero X, sospectators will be able to see just how well thisbike performs, and other Zero models will be ondisplay.

TRADE TALK
The Jersey Electrical Contractors Association wasformed back in 1947 when a number of like-minded contractors, keen to meet and discussthe challenges they faced, got together toestablish a unified approach to matters affectingthe industry.
It also provides reassurance to the public thatwork undertaken by its 36 members will becarried out safely by qualified people.
'Many new regulations and laws are cominginto effect in our own trade,' said JECAChairman Darren Bougourd. 'This is where theAssociation looks to step in and keep businessesinformed on whatever may be relevant.
'For example, the Jersey Competition RegulatoryAuthority decreed that associations should not beable to set financial rates for their members andtheir employees, and ours was among the first tobe affected.
'This, however, should not stop associationscarrying on with other duties and activities, norshould it stop the membership from workingtogether towards harmonising other aspects oftheir trade.'
Recent topics that have been discussed by theJECA include negotiation with the apprentice
authorities so as to allow employers andapprentices to gain full advantage of the systemnow that the apprentice grant has beenremoved.
The association has also been looking at waysof setting up a scheme whereby members withmore than their usual amount of work can'borrow' tradespersons from other members whomay have a short-term lack of work.
'This would be advantageous to all concernedas Jersey can be a bit of a "feast or famine" inthe building trade,' said Darren.
The JECA has also approached the States ofJersey about employing local companies forsome of the larger construction works, rather thanemploying people from outside the Island, andtaken a more pro-active approach towardsputting pressure on the Regulator of Undertakingsabout temporary licensing for overseas workers.

DIMPLEX is changing the way wethink about electric heating with thelaunch of the Quantum EnergySystem, a complete ‘smart' space andwater heating energy managementsystem offering low cost, low carbonelectric heating and hot water.
The system has been purpose-designed toenable low cost zero carbon energy fromrenewable sources to be stored as heat, readyfor when it's needed in the form of highlycontrollable electric space and water heating.
There are three elements – the Quantum ultra-efficient electric heater (below) – a unique, fullyelectronic highly controllable ‘smart' energystorage appliance; the Quantum hot watercylinder – a class-leading self-learningadaptive smart energy storage water vessel;and the Quantum Hub – an intelligent andcompletely automatic system manager, whichfacilitates the bi-directional communicationbetween the Quantum appliances and theenergy supply utility.
Key elements of the system are:–• Ultra efficient heating system with low
running costs delivered by utilising off-peaktariffs;
• Dynamic storage capacity –automatically adjusts to user needs;
• Designed to retain over 50% of heat 24hours after the initial charge;
• Infinitely controllable electronic heatoutput to precisely match user lifestyle;
• Fan assisted heat output when required;• Attractive state-of-the-art design, no
deeper than a double wet radiator;• Chassis covers previous ‘fixing marks’ of
all comparably sized traditional storageheaters and comes with adjustable feetposition;
• Optional communications link provides
Demand Side Management capability;• Electronic user interface with LCD
display for room temperature setting, seven-dayprogrammer for fan operation and installersettings.

Consumers can now get terrific dryingperformance and fantastic energyefficiency with the new heat pumptumble dryer from INDESIT.
The Advance 7.5kg dryer is the company’s firstever A-rated tumble dryer and it goes straightfor an A-30% energy rating.
The dryer uses heat pump technology toreduce its energy usage and also its impact onthe environment. Instead of a heater, there aretwo closed circuits – a normal condenser unitand an evaporator unit – which work togetherto get clothes dry without any heat loss. Theevaporator takes out the excess heat from thecondensed water, pumps it back into themachine as hot air and then repeats theprocess.
The dryer (below) also uses humidity sensors, which work out when the load is dried to oneof three selected levels, and Indesit’s patentedHeat Profile, which controls the cooling downphase to reduce the drying time.
People with active lifestyles will love the sportsand outerwear drying programmes. Sportwearis great for kit like tracksuits and shorts thatdon’t need to be dried fully, Outwear driesspecialist fabrics like Gore-Tex and reactivatesthe water repellent treatment, while SportsShoes uses a special rack to dry your trainersevenly without rubbing or tumbling.
