Be aware of the difference between AID and INVESTMENT
Aid is a gift or more commonly a repayable loan provided by a country, group of countries or organisation such as the World Bank
INVESTMENT is a loan used to develop a country BUT with a share of the profits, and is normally provided by TNCs
Some projects can be a combination of the two, and sometimes it is not always clear as to the distinction
Now refer to pages 207-214 about seven examples of aid and/or investment designed to help narrow the development gap ....

What to doWhat to doWhat to doWhat to doChoose FOUR of these projects and briefly summarise
the relative success of them. Try to understand why each was a relative success or failure. Your choices should provide a balance of top-down and bottom-up projects as well as examples of both aid and investment. Try to assess the extent to which the aid projects represent examples of SMART aid (see mind map).
If you choose our school’s project (start by looking at the link on the CCCS official website) then don’t choose the Kingship project. Also don’t do both the Akosombo dam and the aluminium smelter.
These will provide mini case studies providing evidence for attempts made to narrow the development gap. You should be aware of the other projects but do not spend a lot of time drawing up a detailed analysis.
