EngineA combination of innovations working at the point of combustion, ACERT Technology optimizes engine performance while meeting emission regulations for off-road applications.

Cat C9 with ACERT Technology. The Cat C9 is an 8.8 L displacement, six cylinder, in-line configured enginewith hydraulically actuated electronicfuel injection or HEUI™. It usesACERT Technology, a series ofCaterpillar engineered innovations thatprovide advanced electronic control, precision fuel delivery and refined airmanagement, resulting in outstandingperformance and lower emissions. The C9 with ACERT Technologymeets European Union Stage IIIAemissions standards.

Cylinder Block. Increased block andhead material strength minimizesthe effect of high cylinder pressure.A strengthened flywheel housing jointreduces leaks. The sculpted heavy-dutydesign reduces sound and vibrationlevels. The mid-supported liner hasfewer sealing joints for a reduced riskof leaks. The integral oil cooler reducesengine width, weight and potential leakswhile improving coolant and oil flow.

Cylinder Head. A new cross-flow airdesign with four valves per cylinderand updated port geometry dramaticallyimprove airflow and enginebreathability. The cylinder head blockfeatures a robust six-bolt design for animproved seal between the head andblock at the fire ring which preventscombustion gas leaks. It also minimizesbore/liner distortion. The improvedintake port geometry provides asmoother transition and less flowrestrictions.

Fractured-Split Connecting Rods. The new fractured-split connecting rodsare designed to create near-perfect jointalignment, maximizing rod bearing life. This, in combination with a highefficiency oil filter, ensures longengine life.

ADEM A4™ Engine Controller. The air-cooled ADEM A4 controller is the brainof the engine and contains the engine’scontrol software. It regulates fueldelivery, airflow and other enginefunctions. In addition, it directs theHEUI injectors to deliver multipleinjections of fuel during the engine’scompression stroke.

Fuel Delivery. Multiple injection fueldelivery involves a high degree ofprecision. Precisely controlling thecombustion cycle lowers combustionchamber temperatures, which lowersemissions and optimizes fuel economy. This translates into more work outputper unit of fuel.

7

HEUI Fuel System. The HEUI fuelsystem is highly evolved, with a provenrecord of reliability. HEUI uses thetechnical advancement of an electroniccontrol system with the flexibilityof hydraulically controlled unit fuelinjection. The system excels in itsability to control injection pressure overthe entire engine operating speed range. These features allow the C9 to havecomplete control over injection timing, duration, and pressure.

Air-to-Air Aftercooler. The air-to-airaftercooler (ATAAC) brings cool airto the engine which increases life andlowers emissions. In addition, theATAAC, together with the tighttolerance combustion chambercomponents, maximizes fuel efficiency.

Wastegate Turbocharger. Thewastegate allows high-volume exhaustto be routed around the turbocharger tothe exhaust piping to prevent wheel spinoverspeed at high rpm but low loadconditions.

Service. The new C9 engine offerseasier maintenance and repair throughmonitoring key functions and loggingcritical indicators. Electronic diagnosticaccess is possible with a single tool, the Cat Electronic Technician.

Advanced Modular Cooling System(AMOCS). Using a two pass system, the AMOCS radiator provides moreefficient heat exchange and improvedcooling capacity over the D6T Series II.The coolant is routed from a sectionedbottom tank up the front side, over thetop of the core and down the engineside of the core to the bottom tank. This flow pattern allows the coolantto pass through the radiator twice forbetter cooling.

Serviceability. This modular coredesign permits removal of a single corewithout removing the entire radiator sorepair costs and downtime are reduced. The top tank, side channels and onesealing surface makes AMOCS morereliable and easier to service. A sitegauge allows for quick service checks.

Leak Protection. To reduce the potentialfor coolant leaks, brass tubes are weldedto a large, thick header to improve thestrength of the tube-to-header joint. In conditions where abrasive materialscan be airborne, the attachment sandblast grid should be used to preventcore damage.

Sand Blast Grid. In an applicationwhere airborne debris is prevalent, radiator core protection is a concern. To extend radiator life in harshapplications, a sand blast grid isavailable as an option to deflect thedamaging debris the engine fan propelsat the radiator.

On-Demand Fan Option. Basedprimarily on ambient air temperature, the optional demand fan can improveproductivity up to three percent andreduce fuel consumption up to fourpercent since the demand fan will onlyrun at a speed needed to meet thecooling requirements of the machine. As cooling requirements increase above24° C, the demand fan performanceconverges towards that of the standardfan so lesser benefit is achieved.

8

Power TrainThe power shift transmission and differential steering work in tandem with the new C9 engine to deliver the outstanding power and reliability expected from Caterpillar.

Multi Velocity Program (MVP).The Multi Velocity Program (MVP) is aninnovative machine control system thatallows the operator to choose from fivedifferent speed ranges in Forward andReverse, providing the operator withthe flexibility to match machine speedto a variety of applications and groundconditions. This exclusive solution allowsthe operator to maximize production, minimize fuel consumption, and loweroverall machine operating costs.

MVP provides the operator withfive speed ranges in both Forward andReverse. The engine speed in each speedrange has been optimized to provide thebest performance, fuel economy, anddrawbar pull. The operator retains theability to operate the machine in eitherthe 3 speed or 5 speed mode.

Operating Efficiency and DrivelineReliability. The D6T torque dividerattains the best combinationof operating efficiency and drivelinereliability. It acts as a hydrodynamiccomponent between the engine andtransmission to reduce dozing shockloads to the transmission and finaldrives.

Planetary Power Shift Transmission. The D6T planetary power shifttransmission includes three speedsforward and three speeds reverse andutilizes large diameter, high capacity,oil-cooled clutches. These clutchesprovide higher torque capacity andincreased service life. The planetarypower shift transmission offers severalkey features and benefits, including:• Electronically controlled modulation

system that allows fast, smooth speedand direction changes

• Modular transmission and differentialslide into rear case for servicing ease, even when a ripper is installed

Differential Steering System.Differential steering maintains powerto both tracks while turning. The tractorturns when one track speeds up and theother slows down an equal amount. The operator can steer and control thetransmission simultaneously, which canreduce cycle times in some applications. The differential steering tiller bar hastouch shift buttons for upshifts anddownshifts. The tiller bar itself is easilyrotated forward or reverse to change therespective tractor direction. It is moved

forward to steer the tractor to the leftand pulled back to move right. Lowtiller bar efforts assure operator comfortduring long shifts. Large blade loadscan be maneuvered around buildings, bridge abutments, trees or otherobstacles. Steering modulation is alsooptimized for precise control in theseapplications. Greater load capacity, power and speed control are possible insoft underfoot conditions on steepslopes because both tracks are poweredduring turns.

Elevated Final Drive. Elevated finaldrives are isolated from ground andwork tool-induced impact loads forextended power train life. The modulardesign ensures quick and easy servicewhen required.

Load Compensating Shifting. With load compensating shifting, clutch engagement timing automaticallyadjusts according to the load factor. Thisallows improved tractor performanceand operator comfort during speedchanges and reduces the amount ofenergy dissipated through the clutches tohelp extend transmission component life.
