TRACING YOUR FAMILY TREE

1 – Make a Start As you will be entering a lot of similar information it will be necessary to set some standards. By this I mean how you show each piece of information. For your name I suggest you enter your name as all your names, then any nickname in brackets, then your surname in capitals. Only enter a nickname if it is very different to your name: do not enter Bob if your name is Robert. Your date of birth should be date month, year perhaps with the month abbreviated. For example, 24 December 1964 or 24 Dec 1964. Always include the century, as your family tree will certainly extend back to the 1800’s and maybe the 1700’s. Your place of birth should be as detailed as possible. Include the hospital name and address, if known, the place where your birth was registered, the suburb, city and state. It is generally not necessary to show the country. So let’s start with you. Start a new page in your notebook and enter your full name. Then enter your date of birth and place of birth as well as your parent’s names, using maiden name for your mother. You now have one person with some basic information, on your family tree. Later you will add your spouse and children.

2 – Another Generation – Spouse and Children Before moving on to the next generation, it will be necessary to think about how you are going to organise things. Initially, I suggest each person be shown in a box with his or her name and date of birth only. These boxes are be arranged on the page and connected by lines, which we will explain as we go. Also each box should be given a consequtive number which you will write in the bottom right hand corner. This number (which we will call Ref No) will refer to a page in your notebook where you can add further details of that person. Each generation will be shown on the same row of your family tree. Your and your siblings (and your cousins) will be on one line. Your parents and their brothers & sisters will be on the line above you, your children on the line below you. Allowing for children and perhaps grand children, draw your box, enter your name and date of birth, and put number 1 in the bottom right corner of the box. Go to your notebook and add the number 1 to top right corner of the page you entered your details.

The next people to be added to your family tree will be your spouse and children. Traditionally, husbands are shown to the left of their wife, so draw a box in the appropriate position, enter your spouse’s name, and date of birth with Ref No (2). These two boxes are to be joined by a double line. The date your marriage can be entered immediately below this line.

Go to the second page of your notebook, put the Ref No (2) in the top right corner and enter their full details of name, date of birth, place of birth. You can also add the following details, name of spouse and their Ref No (This is you so the number will be “1”), date married, place married. Now return to your own page and add details of your spouse and their Ref No (2), date married

and place married. Children are best shown connected to their mother on thefamily tree but listed on both their father and mother’s pages of your notebook. Draw a small vertical line down from her box, and a horizontal line, use a small vertical line to connect a box for every child below this horizontal line. Start in the left box; add the name, date of birth and Ref No of the eldest child. Continue across adding other children in decreasing age order. Give each box a Ref No and add their full details on the relevant pages of the notebook. Finally, return to your page and your spouse’s page and add the name, sex, date of birth and Ref No for each child just below the spouse. In addition, start a new page of the notebook for each child.

3 – A Third Generation – Siblings and Parents Having added your own children you can now work up your tree to you parents. From your box add a small vertical line and a horizontal line. Your brothers & sisters will be shown below this line on the same level as yourself. Draw sufficient boxes, allowing room for spouses to be added later. Enter details of your siblings (name, date of birth and Ref No) in the boxes. Then add full details of name, date of birth, place of birth, on the next pages of your notebook. Don’t forget to put the Ref No at the top of each page. Your parents will be added above this last line similarly to yourself and your spouse. Draw a small vertical line up from the horizontal line, add the box for your mother and to her left a box for your father. Join them with a double line and add the date of their marriage below. Add your father’s name, date of birth and Ref No., them add your mother’s name, date of birth and Ref No. Go to the next page in your notebook put your fathers Ref No at the top and add his details: (Full name, date of birth, place of birth, name of spouse, date of wedding, place of wedding, children). Them complete your mother’s page in the same way. You can now return to your page and the page of your siblings and add

your parents’ details. You can add your father and mother’s parents to both the family tree and their pages of your notepad. In the coming pages we are going to use free information on the internet to find more details of these 4 people.

4 – Your Tree is starting to grow Your tree now has 3 generations and shows your parents, your brothers & sisters, yourself, your spouse and your children. Using the Ref No in each box you can find that person in your notebook and see more detailed information. This has been written down from your own knowledge and / or memory but as your tree grows upwards to earlier generations and outwards to more distant relations you will need to gather this information from other people and places.

5 – Sources of information The best source of information of the recent past, say the last 100 years is family members. With each generation being 25 to 30 years your grandparents will provide a lot of information on your direct ancestors. Great aunts, uncles, and distant cousins, are the best sources of outlying branches of your family tree. Apart from people there are lots of information hidden away in birthday books, photo albums, Christmas card lists, and, of course, the family bible. Another source well worth looking out for is newspaper clippings. Offen these can just be a favourite recipe but sometimes they are about a family member. In particular birth, wedding, anniversary and death notices can yield a lot of information.

6 – What to include in your notebook This is your family tree so it is up to you to decide what to include. Here is a list of some of the information you can include:

We will discuss each of these in more detail later. But perhaps the best items to include are the family stories and verbal history.

7 – Family Photos These are very valuable in adding to your family tree. Often they give an insight into the life that your ancestors lived. While portraits will show you what your relatives looked like, it is the candid shots that show how and where they lived. Don’t forget to turn the photo over and check the back for names & dates.

8 – Using the Internet Free geneological information is available at many places on the Internet. These will provide basic information but if you want to obtain more detail you will have to pay for it or subscribe to a group. We will give details of the various Birth Death & Marriages information available for NSW, and later, Queensland.

9 – BDM – New South Wales

Introduction The Registry's historical records are referred to as Online Historical Indexes. These show limited information about birth, death and marriage records in the following years:

• Births 1788 to 1908 • Deaths 1788 to 1978

• Marriages 1788 to 1958

Making a Search Step 1: Enter the last name and/or given name of the person you wish to search. (When entering the given name, type in only the first given name and second initial. If you provide too much information the record may not be found.) Step 2: For Marriages, enter the bride and/or groom's last name and/or given name. (When entering the given name, type in only the first given name and second initial. If you provide too much information the record may not be found.) Step 3: Select the type of event you wish to search by clicking the appropriate radio button (Births or Deaths). To access the Marriage search screen from the Births and Deaths screen, select the “Go to Marriages Search” button to the right of the screen. Step 4: Enter the range of years when the event may have occurred. The date must be entered in four (4) digits and you must enter a date in the 'from' field. Step 5: If you know the district in which the birth, death or marriage event was registered, enter the name of the district. This field is optional. Step 6: If you are satisfied with the details you have entered, click 'Search Now'. You can also click 'Reset' if you want to clear all the fields you have entered. After you have selected 'Search Now', the system will retrieve matches to the search criteria you have entered. Search Results A search result from the Online Historical Indexes contains the following information:

• First name • Last name

• Year the event was registered • District (place the event was registered)

• Unique Registration Number • Parent's given names for birth and deaths, spouse’s first and last name for marriages.

More Information If you want further information about a record, you can purchase a Family History Certificate online. As the record you have chosen includes the registration number, you will receive a discounted fee of just $27.00 per certificate compared to the standard fee of $35.00.

10 – Extending your Family Tree – Adding Death Details From the section above you can see that the most recent information is for deaths. These are available up to 1978 just 40 years ago. Lets find the death date of someone on your family tree that died prior to 1978. As an example, I will use my mother’s mother, Florence Mary Clissold. As she was married when she died we will have to use her married name of Anderson. I have used the From Date as 1890 to have less irrelevant results.

Although there are 75 results, I can use what I know to eliminate irrelevant results. She died when I was quite young and that she and her husband lived at Austral Eden on the Macleay River, which runs through Kempsey. Her details are shown on the second last line.

You can now add boxes for her parents just above her. At the moment, you can enter her father’s name and her mother’s first name only, together with the next Ref No’s. On my mothers mother’s page of the notebook I can add her year of death, place of death, death Registration No, fathers name, and mothers first name. On her parents notebook page you can enter their first names. We will return to them later to find more information. So, knowing approximately when she died we can find out quite a bit of information.

11 – Extending your Family Tree – Adding Marriage Details We want more, so lets try her marriage, Click on the “Go to Marriages Search” button and complete what we know.

Again I have used the From Date of 1890 to have less irrelevant results and the To Date of 1955 being 1 year after her death.

Only one result! This is good. In your notebook you can add more details; year of marriage, place of marriage, marriage registration no. and on your chart you can add the year of marriage.

12 – Extending your Family Tree – Adding Birth Details So far we have marriage details and death details as well as her parents’ names. So lets try for birth details remembering that births are available up to 1908.

We are gradually moving back in time so will set the From Date at 1850 to ensure we obtain all available information.

Again just one result. We can add year of birth, place of birth, birth registration number to the notebook, and add the year of birth to her box on the family tree. So my mother’s father and mother’s details are shown below.

13 – Extending your Family Tree – Adding Siblings So we have found out a lot about my maternal grandmother. Did she have any brothers & sisters? To do this we will look for people with the same surname and with the same parents.

Six children are shown, all with surname clissold and with George and Esther as parents. So there are five more people to add to your family tree. The boxes for these are to be added on the same row as Florence Clissold. Each will have a page in your notebook, where you can record their name, year of birth, place of birth, birth registration no, father’s full name, and mother’s first name. You can also see that George Clissold has a second name of Archibald so you can add that to his box on the family tree and to his page in the notebook.

14 – Extending your Family Tree – Mother’s Surname The last piece of information we need about my grandmother is her mother’s surname. We can look for it on the marriage search page as follows.

Unfortunately, no results were found for this search. However, all is not lost. Remember, if you provide too much information the record may not be found. So lets remove the bride’s name, which will return marriage details for all grooms named George Clissold.

And there it is my great grandmother’s surname is Moseley. The clerk writing the record shows her name as Ester, which is probably a mis-spelling. You can now add the year of marriage to the double line on the family tree. Also you can add her surname to her own, her husband’s and her

childrens’ records in your notebook. The marriage year, place and registration no can also be added to her husbands and to her own notebook entry. These are shown below. Each of the other children would have a page in your noebook. By repeating the same process of Death, Birth and Marriage searches you should be able to find more information about George, Esther and their children; and extend back another generation.

15 – Florence Mary Clissold -- The story unfolds.

“Florence Mary Clissold was born in 1887 to George Archibald Clissold and Esther Moseley in St George, NSW. Her parents had married in 1875 in St George, NSW. Two children (Alice and Bessie Ann) were born there, the family moved to Petersham, where the next three children (Arthur E, George W, and Florence M) were born. The family moved again, this time to Marrickville where their last child (Alfred J) was born. In 1918, she married Arthur B Anderson in Petersham, NSW. She moved to a farm at Austral Eden in the Kempsey district. Their daughter, Allison was born in 1919. She died in 1954.”

• births that occured in Queensland between 1829 and 1914 • deaths that occured in Queensland between 1829 and 1929 • marriages that occured in Queensland between 1829 and 1929.

Some early church records for births and deaths exist. These records are not listed within the above ranges, as the date of event is not known. These records are stored with a year of event of 1800. To retrieve these records perform a search with a 'year from' of 1800 along with any other required fields filled. Searches are not case sensitive, that is, you can use upper and lower case and get the same search result. Required fields To search for an event, the following fields need to be filled:

• family name or given name(s) • year to search from.

To refine your search, fill as many fields as possible. Years to be searched When entering the year to be searched, you must enter a four-digit year in the 'from' field. The 'to' field can be left blank. This will result in a search of the range bounded by the year entered in the 'from' field and the latest year for which records can be searched (1914 for births and 1929 for marriages and deaths). Year of registration The year of registration is not necessarily the same year as the event. Events that occur in December may not be registered until January of the following year. For example, where the date of birth is 22 December 1928 and the registration date is 8 January 1929, the year of registration is 1929. Knowing that my father’s father, Samuel Linn Fulton was married in Queensland I am going to search the Queensland BDM index.

So he was married twice. In the notebook, we simply enter his name, birth and parents details followed by spouse, marriage and children for each spouse in turn. You will have to start a page for his first wife as she has not appeared before. As Samuel Linn married Hilda in 1920 and the Queensland death records extend up to 1929 we might find the date of Annie Maria’s death. Success, her death is shown along with the place of death, death registration no, and, importantly, the names of her parents.

17 – Time to pause. So we are moving back in time and have nineteen people on the family tree, spreading over 4 generations. This information might help your relatives to remember people and stories they have forgotten, a browse through photo albums might reveal photos of people you have just discovered. A redrawing of your family tree might be necessary to re-organise people into a better position. A search of NSW BDM of the names that you found in the Queensland records, and vice versa, might reveal more information. A repeat of your previos searches of NSW BDM and QLD BDM might reveal more information, particulally if your searches are of a general nature.

18 – FreeBDM – United Kingdom http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/cgi/search.pl But it is time to go back to the UK and check the BDM for our relatives. We will first try for the birth of Hilda Atherden. We have chosen date range based on her date of marriage. This assumes she was married between 15 and 40 years old.

From the results below you can see that she was born in Mar 1894. As the registers are issued quarterley, this date is actually the date registered and is between Jan to Mar. She was born in Dover, Kent, England. The birth registration is Dover, Vol 2a, Page 1017. This information can be added to her page in your notebook.

Clicking on the link for Dover will give you details of the District of Dover. Clicking on the link for the page number shows other people registered on the same page. Generally, these people will be unrelated, but not in this case.

You can see that my grandmother had a twin, Emily. You can add her to your family tree and your notebook. At the moment we have no information on the twins parents.; we are going to check out another resource on the web.

19 – Another Free Resource – FamilySearch.org http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp One of the core tenets of Mormon faith is that the dead can be baptized into the faith after their passing. Baptism of the dead evolved from the beliefs that baptism is necessary for salvation and that the family unit can continue to exist together beyond mortal life if all members are baptized. Mormons trace their family trees to find the names of ancestors who died without learning about the restored Mormon Gospel so that these relatives from past generations can be baptized by proxy in the temple. For Latter-day Saints, genealogy is a way to save more souls and strengthen the eternal family unit. Original records About 2.4 million rolls of microfilm containing 2 billion names that have been traced -- are locked away behind 14-ton doors in the Cradle Mountains Record Vault, a climate-controlled repository designed to survive a nuclear impact that is built into the Wasatch mountain range, about 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. These Mormon archives are a boon to professional and amateur genealogists. Copies of the original microfilms are freely available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, which is the main repository, and they can be ordered at smaller regional Family History Centers. The records include vital records (birth, death and marriage certificates), wills and probate records, land records, town or county records, church records and more.

Online records. Much of the information is online at FamilySearch.org, which has several types of databases:

• The International Genealogical Index (IGI) consists of two kinds of information: primary records typically gathered by Mormon missionaries and transcribed and indexed by Mormon and non-Mormon volunteers; and copies of ordinances provided by members of the church.

• The Ancestral File has more than 35 million names organized into families and pedigrees. The information is not sourced, though typically you can find the name and address of the person who submitted the information so you can contact the submitter for further information. The Ancestral File stopped taking submissions in 2003; new submissions are added to the Pedigree Resource File. Anyone can submit information to the Pedigree Resource File; like the Ancestral File, the submitter's name is indicated.

• The church created an index for every person counted in the 1880 U.S. census, the 1881 Canadian census and the 1881 British census. These records are freely available online, and images can be accessed at the Family History Library or a Family History Center.

Searching FamilySearch.org Required Information You must enter at least: An individual's last name (unless you search for children of the same parents). What Searches Are Invalid? FamilySearch will not search for:

• A first name only. • Middle names. FamilySearch will ignore middle names unless you check the Use exact

spelling box. When you check Use exact spelling, the search will look for the individual's first, middle, and last name exactly as you listed it. If you check Use exact spelling, you may not list parents, spouse, event, year, or country.

Tips for Searching for Your Ancestors You may search for just a last name, but no more than 25 results will be displayed from each source that is searched. From the results page, you can select a source in Sources Searched

(the red box) to see all the results from that source. Up to 200 results will be displayed on a page. Click Next to look at more matching records from the same source. For common surnames, fill in additional fields to improve your search results. You will get better results if you enter an individual's first name and last name. You can use any combination of the parents' names with the individual's name. You can use any combination of the spouse's first name and last name with the individual's first name and last name. Last names are standardized so that spelling variations are retrieved in the results. Search for Children of the Same Parents To search for children of the same parents, enter:

• The father’s first and last name.

• The mother’s first name (the mother’s last name is optional).

Narrow Your Search You may now use the following to make your search more specific:

• Event • Year range (If you select year range, you must provide a year in the Year box.) • Year • Country • Use exact spelling (If you check Use exact spelling, you may not list parents, spouse,

event, year, or country.) So lets try a search for the parents of my father’s mother. I have searched using her first name, last name, and date of birth.

This is the result; just one giving her christening date and place.

Clicking on the link on her name takes us to the IGI record as memtioned above.

This also shows her parents. We can now add these to our family tree and create new pages in the notebook for them and Hilda’s twin Emily.

20 – Searching for missing information

Lets continue on the Atherden line and see if we can find the surname of Emily Jane. We will search for their marriage details, with a date before June1894 and in Kent, England to accommodate the twins’ birth details.

21 – More Missing Information My Grandfather was married twice, first to Annie Maria Atherden and then to Hilda Atherden. We have already determined that they had different parents so were not sisters. Maybe, they were cousins as so they had the same Grandfather. Here are their entries in the notebook again.
