Why TPMS?

TPMS legislation USA

•  In 2000 Firestone recalled 6.5 million SUV tires because of tread separation – Ford Explorer.

•  24,000 serious accidents in the USA each year were totally a result of tyre failure due to low pressure.

•  The Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation act, the TREAD act was passed in the USA.

•  Introduction was phased, 20% 2006, 70% 2007, 100% 2008.

TPMS legislation EU

•  In November 2012 all new TYPE vehicles will be required by law to have a pressure based tyre pressure monitoring system installed.

•  Some car manufacturers have already introduced TPMS to their vehicles ahead of the 2012 legislation change.

•  Renault Peugeot and Citroen have fitted TPMS to some models since 2003/4.

•  More and more cars now have TPMS already fitted. Showrooms are full of TPMS compliant cars.

European TPMS systems have to comply with these 2 scenarios:

!  Motivation: safety and Co2 reduction

!  Safety: Puncture test: TPMS has to detect pressure drop of 20% at operating temperature of the tire within 10 Min.

!  CO2 : Diffusion test: TPMS must detect (within 60 Min. acc. driving time) equal pressure drop in all 4 tires.

!  Technology Neutral

!  Tires: OE tires

!  Process: OE homologation

TPMS legislation

!  In the UK already part of MOT.

!  All cars registered after 1 January 2012.

!  Have to comply from 1 January 2015 with 2010/48EC.

!  If present TPMS system must be functioning.

!  Other EU countries will (must) follow.

!  No sensors to measure tire pressure.

!  Measuring using rotation speed of the tire (ABS)

!  Flat tire will have different rpm

!  If a (stable) rpm difference is measured the TPMS tell tale will light up.

Indirect Pros & Cons

!  No extra parts needed, most cars already have TPMS

!  No sensor replacement.

!  No damage to sensors when servicing tires.

Direct TPMS Every wheel has separate sensor to meassure pressure.

!  Direct TPMS measures pressure to 0,01 accurately.

!  TPMS sensor measures absolute pressure.

!  Sensor sends signal every 10-30s pressure loss is detected fast.

6. Auswahl des passenden VentilsFür verwendete Felge muss eine normkonforme (DIN, ETRTO und TRA) Ventillänge ausgewählt werden. Angaben des Felgenhersteller beachten.

Das Ventil muss bei jedem Sensorwechsel ausgetauscht werden!

7. Abdrücken des Reifens • Stellen Sie das Rad zunächst in die Abdrückschaufel der

Montiermaschine. • Das Ventil muss in einem Abstand zwischen 90 und 270 Grad

zur Abdrückschaufel positioniert und dort beginnend ab -gedrückt werden.

• Drücken Sie den Reifen mehrere Male auf der Außenseite ab. • Reifenwulst darf das Tiefbett der Felge dabei nicht in der

Nähe des Sensors berühren.• Drücken Sie abschließend den Reifen auch mehrere Male auf

der Innenseite ab und beachten Sie die Hinweise wie beimAbdrücken der Außenseite.

8. Freilegen des Sensors durch Abziehen des Reifens• Stellen Sie sich bitte die Position des Montagekopfes auf

einer 12-Uhr-Position vor.• Positionieren Sie den Reifen so, dass das Ventil auf einer

11-Uhr-Position liegt. • Beginnen Sie mit der Demontage vom oberen Reifenwulst.• Ziehen Sie den unteren Reifenwulst bei gleicher Position des

Ventils wie beim oberen Reifenwulst ab.

9. Demontieren des defekten Sensors• Ventilkörper lösen, von Innenseite aus Ventilloch entnehmen

und sicherstellen, dass ggf. außenliegende Unterlegscheibeentfernt wird.
