Assignment Title Toy Design

Introduction

Hopefully the Group based design project made you think more about analysis, creativity and the

importance of process! Specifically, you should have realised how much (MORE) time you need

to spend exploring, finessing and detailing your final design! This is the last and most-complete

project of the year and you should notice that this final project is worth quite a few module marks!

This is because you have practised design on several projects now and should be getting better

at it!

To make this one interesting, I have given you a choice of several quite vague of starting points.

You must make your choices about these at the very start of the project. You should note that

the ‘span’ of the project is still only about 5 weeks to hand-in. The formal presentation and project

hand-in will be on the VERY LAST DAY OF TERM. You should plan to reach ‘concept’ after the

first week (20 %!). Clearly, for this to happen, you need to have chosen the project in the first

week! Time planning issues will be discussed further at the briefing session. NOTE - We also

need to discuss Exhibition/Show Timing and work!

Design Process

Plan your time – be realistic about when you will work! Set dates for final idea, specification final

concept, etc. Start on this straight away and be creative. Work ‘Smart’

Scenario

Imagine that a company who makes toys and life style accessories for children and young adults

has approached you. They would like you to develop a completed solution for one of the following

outline briefs. You will of course need to make decisions regarding your chosen market by the

end of the FIRST SESSION! and customer and you will need to decide what they will require

from your solution!

Submission

This coursework should be submitted directly after the presentation on 15.4.11. One good

quality copy of the coursework must be submitted in a plastic pocket with a correctly completed

attached cover sheet in the Programme Team colour (peach). The work will not be returned, it is

your responsibility to keep a copy of the work submitted.

Physical model As close a representation of the final article that you are able to make 10%**

Computer model That presents your final design as accurately as possible. 10%**

5 minute presentation You will be required to make a formal power point presentation to ‘sell’ you final solution to the board of directors (staff and all students) - 10%

Pedal powered VVeehhiiccllee

The company currently produces a number of pedal cars for children. As is common with many other manufacturers the designs are mainly based on character or ’classic’ cars or they are simple ‘go-carts’. These products have limited appeal to children aged over 8 years old. The company do not want to enter a franchising/merchandising agreement so designs based upon existing cars or existing characterisations (eg jaguar, ford, batman, noddy, brum etc) are not acceptable. Your task is to identify a new look and market and produce a design solution that uses the same basic mechanical elements (drive, steering and chassis) as a standard ‘go-cart’ ( http://www.pedalcar.org.uk/pink_pedals.htm) but delivers a much more modern/futuristic appeal. You will have to investigate and measure the standard parts. The company believes that you should produce an innovative and futuristic design for a pedal powered vehicle however you may have an alternative idea that uses the parts. You must discuss and agree your chosen market with the client

☺ during the first two weeks of the project!

Innovative thing-but-not-a-cclloocckk!

Although the company do not currently produce a clock, they have recently acquired a factory that produces a standard ‘quartz movements’ that are powered by a single AA cell (http://www.clockparts.co.uk/bulk.htm?gclid=CNPfsuqQxacCFQoY4Qod40E5EA ). Indeed perhaps clock is too strong a word! The company would like you to produce a design solution for an innovative and creative product (which may possibly be a timepiece) that utilises their clock movements. Samples of the movement are available (although you may wish to get hold of one of your own) and you will have to investigate and measure the mechanism. You must discuss and agree your chosen market with the client during the first two weeks of the project!

Interlocking oorrnnaammeenntt

The company currently produces a range of ‘die pressed’ plywood puzzles that allow quite complex parts to be pushed out of sheets and assembled using 'interference fits' to make three dimensional models ( http://www.woodentoysuk.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=33_37 ). These are mainly dinosaurs, insects and some vehicles. The company now owns ‘water jet’ cutting facility that will allow them to cut fairly intricate parts from clear acrylic sheets. Your task is to identify a new and exciting market for these types of models that will justify the extra expense in producing them from acrylic sheet and produce a design solution. Ideally the models would be cut from a maximum of two A4 sheets (possibly different colours) of 3mm acrylic. You must discuss and agree your chosen market with the client during the first week of the project! *** NB - consider balance!

Personal FFaann

The company currently produces a cheap battery powered fan but it is designed for a broad and universal market ( http://www.showyourlogo.com/personal-care/Personal-Fans.htm ). The Company feel that a novel and innovative approach to the interpretation of a fan product for a specific market would sell well. The need for people to keep cool in a hot environment is necessary for personal comfort and general well being. This can range from a stuffy office, to a traveller in a hot country, to a factory worker on a busy production line. Your task is to adopt a novel and innovative approach to the interpretation of a battery powered fan for a specific market! You must discuss and agree your chosen market with the client during the first week of the project!

Fashion PPhhoonnee

The company recognise that ‘blue-tooth’ headset and hands free headsets are used not only in the work place but also during leisure time (http://www.w-cellphones.com/cell-phone-headsets/ ). The continuing reduction in size and use of voice recognition technology means that a mobile phone may now be possible with a volume of as little as 10 cubic centimeters (http://www.waybeta.com/news/6399/street-fashion-headset-sound-lai-lai-isr11isr13-sound-headphones-will-be-listed-_-news/ ). Thus the phone and headset could be combined into one item. The company are specifically interested in ‘behind the ear’ phones as fashion accessories for teenagers and young adults (http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/387161226-Headphone-caps-fashion-headset-computer-headset-headset-headset-wholesale-supply-Fmv2-wholesalers.html ). You are asked to undertake and complete and comprehensive design project that looks at producing a final design for a mobile phone that fits to the ear and is aimed at a specific market within the stated range.

☺- Nik!
