OKOTOKS CULTURE PROGRAM GUIDE3
Much of her work is focused on creating
both a critical distance for the viewer
of discarded, mass-produced objects,
while simultaneously drawing from, and
building upon the extreme sensuality and
seduction of these objects. Each piece is
highly symmetrical, anchoring these once
coveted objects in the sublime, and the
desire to control that which is potentially
frightening and beyond our control.

EXHIBIT-RELATED PROGRAMSOK.CLUB @ OAG | $10 registration feeTour & Talk – “Phantom Limb”43994 Saturday, Sep 13 | 1:30 pm to 3 pm
Phantom Limb is an installation piece by
Calgary based, interdisciplinary artist, Shyra
De Souza. The piece as a whole resembles a
mythical body or skeleton – organic and fluid
– undulating through the gallery space. But
upon closer inspection, the “bones” reveal
themselves as altered and reconfigured
thrift store finds; they are discarded
mass produced, trinkets, ceramics, and
knickknacks, with which we are all familiar.
Each object is added in such a way that
they begin to erase one another, and
take on forms reminiscent of mounted,
overgrown deer antlers or three
dimensional Rorschach forms.
De Souza places the resulting forms
within a theatrical context that prompts
a self-guided process for the viewer who
then becomes a part of the work. The
recontextualization of these everyday
objects encourages a range of new
interpretations, different for each person.

Regarding Death is a collection of paintings
that reflects on contemporary thoughts
and trepidations about the process of
dying and decay, as well as the revulsion we
feel towards the notion of examining and
dissecting a corpse. In recent years zombies
have held the fascination and imagination
of popular culture; according to Binzer, this
may be in part due to the fear of death
and the horror of corpses. For Binzer, his
personal interest in zombies is that they
highlight the reality that all of our bodies
are in a constant process of decay.

Mike Binzer’s curiosity about the human
body began to develop over 16 years of
training and performing in classical and
contemporary ballet. His studio practice
encompasses figurative drawing and
painting, as well as anatomical study.
Through phenomenological research,
meditations on sensation and drawing
on his experience as a ballet dancer,
Binzer’s perception of the body is focused
on painting the human form as it is
experienced, rather than as it is merely
visually perceived.

Low Hanging Fruit
Clint Neufeld
Jan 9 to Feb 28 | Large Gallery
To Clint Neufeld, beauty is endless rows
of trucks purring at the truck-stop or the
sound as a diesel engine slowly picks up
speed and the unmistakable whine of the
turbo kicking in. In his art, Neufeld explores
these notions of masculinity and beauty.
He uses the process of slip casting to create
life size ceramic car engines and parts
dating predominantly from the 50s and
60s. These engines were part of the Hot-
Rodding subculture and hold a significant
place in automotive history. He decorates
the pieces with patterns reminiscent of
those adorning fine china and displays
them on antique pieces of furniture,
creating something beautiful and delicate
out of what is generally hidden and covered
with grime.
Light Horse Tales of an Afghan WarAl Henderson
Jan 9 to Feb 28 | Small Gallery
Alberta artist and veteran, Alan Henderson,
saw a number of friends and former
colleagues sent from Canada’s military
mission in Afghanistan. Their stories created
a desire to express what he had been told
and shown in art. Henderson works in both
contemporary and traditional mediums –
carving marble, casting metals, drawing
on a tablet and using 3D digital scanning.
This series combines a national view of the
conflict in Afghanistan with striking examples
of his friends’ personal recollections of their
time serving with the Southern Alberta Light
Horse Regiment.

Treasures from theMuseum Collection
TREASURES FROMTHE MUSEUM COLLECTION3D movies are all the rage in theatres today;
however, did you know Okotoks pioneers
were able to enjoy their own type of 3D
entertainment? One of the unique artifacts
in the museum’s collection is a wooden
hand-held stereoscope donated by the
Carr family. The stereoscope was invented
by Charles Wheatstone in 1838 to view
drawings in 3D. The stereoscope gained
popularity because of both the invention
of photography and praise from Queen
Victoria. In 1859 hand-held versions were
developed, bringing stereoscopes to the
masses as an educational tool and a form
of entertainment. The Okotoks museum
also has an extensive collection of stereo
cards for use in the stereoscope.
TREASURES FROMTHE ARCHIVAL COLLECTION Jim and Jack Creighton were two brothers
who served in the Boer War in South Africa.
They both wrote weekly letters home to
their mother Agnes Creighton who at the
time of the war was living in Manitoba.
In 1903 the Creightons moved to the
Okotoks area.
Jim and Jack’s letters from the Boer War
are part of the treasured collection at the
Okotoks Archives. These letters poignantly
describe the conditions under which the
brothers served: “We have had our first
dose of the whirr of the bullets and the
sight of men dropping in their tracks...
Here the Boers are within 50 yards of the
camp and not more than 200 yards from
our horse lines... Our dead were collected
by dinner time and buried in the afternoon.
It looked sad to see 19 strong fellows laid
out in a row.”
(Excerpt from a letter by Jack Creighton, June 2, 1900 from Grigualand West Cape Colony)

Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as
Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to
recognize the value of Alberta’s arts
and cultural communities. Since then, it
has expanded into a vibrant, three-day,
province wide celebration that has helped
inspire the creation of Culture Days - a pan-
Canadian movement to raise the awareness,
accessibility, participation and engagement
of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life
of their communities.
