REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENTOF SCHOOLS IN MADBURY, N. H.

To THE School Board and Citizens of Madbury:

I am submitting my sixth annual report. On Julyfirst Milton was added to Supervisory Union No. 56,

which is now composed of Somersworth, Rollinsford, Dur-

ham, Madbury and IMilton. This enlarged territory has

necessitated a revision of time given to Madbury but as

a rule both of your schools are visited each week, and

never less than once in two weeks. I believe in frequent

short visits rather than in long ones far apart. Both of

the teachers this year are new to the work in Madbury

but I can truthfully say that they are maintaining the

standards set by the teachers who preceded them. Both

of the school buildings are in reasonably good shape.

The teacher and jxipils ha^'e worked hard at the Center

School to improve their yard. I wish that at some time

we could get the good cooperative spirit working and

have a "bee" at this school to make a school yard tocompare favorably with DeMcrritt Square. This could

also be done at the North School where a good play-

ground could be made better. We also need swings andteeter boards.

All last winter milk was distributed to pupils whoneeded it to build up strong bodies and the money wasjirovided from Federal funds. In November of this yearthe fund was renewed and will be continued, probably

imtil June 1. Six bottles per day are provided for each

    school.

No State Aid was received in December of this yearbut it is hoped that a small amount will be received next

  • 41

year. Since Dover charges a high rate of high school

tuition, nearly one-fourth of the school funds provided

    go for this item.

At the time of this writing a coal grate is being in-

stalled at the Center School and we hope that this will

enable the children to have a more even and comfortable

temperature in their school room. The outside door isan improvement.

The report of the School Nurse follows.

    Respectfully submitted,

    HOWARD L. WINSLOW

    MRS. ELLA CYNTHLA. (YOUNG) CANNEY

In July of this present year came the sad news that

Mrs. Canney had passed away after an iUness of several

    weeks.

Mrs. Canney was born August 10, 1851 in Dover,

    N. H., and was the daughter of George W. Young andCynthia E. Moody. On June 24, 1880 she married Her-man Edcil Canney. For several years the couple livedin Clarksville, Virginia, coming to Dover, N. H., to make

their home for over forty years.

In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Canney came to Madbury to

live in the old Paul Chesley home. Here Mrs. Canney

led a cjuiet, useful life to the present time. She was kind

to neighbors and all who came in contact with her. In

her home she was most efficient and "looked well after

    the ways of her household."

Three children survive her—Herman C. Canney, Ma-bel Canney, and Elmer Canney.

    MRS. ELLEN MARIA WEEKS HAYES

The town has lost another valued citizen in the passing

of Mrs. Hayes. For many years, as the wife of Mr.Charles W. Hayes, she was a prominent and useful citi-

    zen of Madbury.

She was born in Strafford, N. H., April 29, 1843 and

was the daughter of William and Maria (Clark) Weeks.

When about five years of age she moved with her family

  • 48

to Barrington, N. H., where she made her home at the

Weeks homestead until she married Mr. Hayes, Novem-

l)cr 8, 1866 and came to live in Madbury. She was prom-

inent and influential in all church, educational and social

affairs of the town. In later years she made her winter

home with her oldest daughter, Mrs. George E. Crosby,

in Allston, Massachusetts, spending each summer at her

home in ^ladbury in the usual activities with her many

    friends.

She passed away at the advanced age of 90 years, 3

months and 27 days. There are three daughters born in

Madbury to mourn her loss. Mrs. George E. Crosby,

Allston, Mass., Mrs. Charles S. Fuller, Cambridge, Mass.,

and Mrs. Lorenzo E. Baer, Rollinsford, N. H.

For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Hayes lived in

Dover, N. H., keeping the old home and farm in Mad-

bury. During this time both became members of the

First Parish Church and the Historical Societj^ called the

    Northern Colonists.
