Library Seen in Dresden December, 2019 By K. D. Vitelli A late Thanksgiving this year was heralded by dire accounts of the major snowstorm heading our way. It arrived the following Monday, 12/2, dumping a decent (but hardly dire, at least in Dresden) snow and dressing our landscape for the holidays—we thought. The rivers started to freeze, ducks left, winter was here. Then the temperatures rose into the 50’s and it rained and rained. Snow is now (12/14) gone, grass is greening up, ducks and even a couple of herons are back. Eagles are fishing with them. Snows are expected again starting Christmas Eve. The back and forth start to winter is very much like what we experienced last year, multiple times, before everything settled down to the real thing. Is this the new normal? Seen in Dresden (continued from page 1)

We tend to think nature is pretty quiet in winter, with most creatures either leaving town or going into hibernation. Tracks in the snow tell us otherwise. A few days after the fresh snowfall there was very little un-tracked snow in my yard. Most were admittedly turkey tracks, but plenty of others were represented. Maybe the activity in my yard really is a result of having taken the Messy Garden Pledge, which I did a few years back, initially to justify not having gotten around to a “proper” cleanup in the fall. Back then, the Habitat Network encouraged gardeners to leave tall stems and dried seed heads, shriveled fruits and berries, tall grasses, brush piles, leaves and the like in the garden all winter, at least until we have several consecutive days above 50 degrees in the spring to give butterfly chrysalises and other such beings time to warm up from their winter torpor. These “messy” items are, in fact, essential resources for all sorts of birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and even mammals. Our native goldenrod, asters, cone flowers, sunflowers, coreopsis, and black-eyed Susans provide especially important nutrients for wild creatures of all sorts, summer and winter. Goldenrod is a kind of super plant: besides producing abundant seeds, it is frequently visited by the goldenrod gallfly. This fly, as do others that chose different plants, lays its eggs in the tissue of goldenrod stems, creating bulbous swellings called “galls.” Woodpeckers and chickadees, among others, harvest the juicy larvae in the galls, acquiring an

essential protein and fat-rich treat. Many of our native bees and even butterflies overwinter in leaf litter. Tall seed heads bouncing above the snow are said to attract birds and others to an area. If you want to feel better about not having gotten to your fall chores, check out the full argument in favor of a messy garden (search: messy garden pledge, Habitat Network). You may well find yourself not only taking the pledge this year, but even planning and planting with its winter benefits in mind for the future. Not among the tracks in my yard, but not far away from it, friends driving up the Call’s Hill Road saw a young bull moose out for a stroll, an uncommon sight in these parts (see front page). I have not seen a little brown creeper this year, but two were reported off Alexander Road. This tiny songbird (4.5-5.5” long) has a white underside and brown back with small light spots that make it look like a piece of the bark it is usually seen climbing. The bird commonly lands near the base of a tree and spirals up the trunk with its legs out on either side of the body, hooking into the bark with its claws, the long stiff tail adding support. It is looking for insects and spiders that it digs out with its long, thin, curved bill. Then it flies down to the next tree and starts over again. By the time you see this we will also be starting over, with a new year, a new decade. May they still be full of the joys of the great outdoors.
