NOVEMBER BOOKGod’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine By Victoria Sweet

San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital is the last

almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s Hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves—“anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times” and needed extended medical care—ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for twenty years. A medical “page-turner” that traces one doctor’s remarkable journey to the essence of Medicine. (Meets November 12)

DECEMBER BOOKThe Red Tent By Anita Diamant

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons. Told in Dinah’s voice, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. Dinah’s story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. (Meets December 10)
