General InformationJill’s Notes:This past year has been a year full of changes in the Recreation Department. In September, it was with much sadness we said good-bye to our former Recreation Director, Nikki Kelsden. Nikki worked tirelessly to build community in Columbia and offer fun activities for all ages. Since replacing Nikki as interim Recreation Director before taking the job permanently in November, I have been working to continue to offer activities and events of interest to our community. Linda McDonald joined the department as the Assistant to the Recreation Director, and her enthusiasm and knowledge makes her an invaluable asset to the department.
The Recreation Department endeavors to provide Columbia with a variety of opportunities, from fitness classes to paint nights. If you are wondering how to find out about our offerings, we advertise in a variety of ways.
If you go to the recreation webpage (http://columbia.recdesk.com), you will find all of our current programming and other pertinent information.
• When you create your family’s profile on our website, you will receive emails about special events and programming.
• We have a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ ColumbiaCTRecDept) where you can “Like” us to get updates on recreation activities.
• Additionally, we often advertise on the Town Green, with Porter school, and on bulletin boards around town.

Town BeachKAYAKS
Last summer, Columbia Recreation began renting kayaks to residents at the Columbia Lake Beach. A portion of the David Bell donation was used to start this kayak rental program. Residents can rent kayaks at the beach for $10 for two hours per kayak while the lifeguards are on duty.
The following is information about our kayaks and on how you can rent them at the beach:
• All kayaks will remain on Columbia Lake and may only be rented by a resident.
• All renters are required to have a Coast Guard approved Type I, II or III lifejacket in their kayak at all times.
• Children 12 and under are required by law to wear their lifejacket at all times.
• Residents may also use/wear their own Coast Guard approved lifejackets as long as they are Type I, II or III.
• Residents may rent the kayaks on a first come-first served basis at the beach when the Lifeguards are regularly scheduled to be on duty.
• There is a $20/hour late fee for not bringing the kayaks back at the designated time.
• Renters must leave their driver’s license and a $50 deposit per kayak that will be returned once the rental is returned in good condition.
NEW CONCRETE DOCK!The replacement dock at the town beach has been completed and will be ready for the 2015 beach season! This replaces the “t-dock” removed last year. In keeping with the character of the lake, the new dock has been sided with concrete blocks made to resemble a stone wall. The dock project deadline of March 15th was met during the coldest weeks of the winter season with more than a foot of snow on the ground. The dock will help slow down beach erosion due to wave action and provide a safety feature to separate swimmers from boaters at the boat launch. The Recreation Department is appreciative to Facilities Manager, Bud Meyers, who spearheaded this project from start to finish!

COLUMBIAYOUTH BASKETBALL
01-015With Great AppreciationThank you to all who coached or volunteered during the 2014-15 Rec. Basketball season. Your commitment is so important, not only to the children, but to keeping our community close-knit, caring, and involved.
The 2nd Annual Basketball Banquet was coordinated again by Maria Gratton and Jeanette Morales along with an army of volunteers. The night was a fun-filled event for our basketball players and their families. Everyone enjoyed pizza and cotton candy along with fabulous cupcakes made by Jared Keegan. All the proceeds from this year’s banquet will go towards purchasing another time clock for the HW Porter gymnasium. Thank you Maria, Jeanette, MC Jerry Hughes, and the entire team of volunteers!
Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to our Basketball Commissioner Brad Earnest. Brad devotes so much time working with the Recreation Department to organize teams, practice and game schedules, opening/closing/cleaning the gym on the weekends and so many other aspects of basketball. The Rec. Department sincerely appreciates you and your family for all that you do!

The main parking lot off Hunt Road near Yeoman’s Road provides access to two trails which start at the same trail head near a large boulder at the edge of the lot. The Yellow Trail is a one mile loop. The shoreline portions are popular for fishing access. Part of the Yellow Trail has been developed as a Nature Trail with a guide available on the back of the sign board at the parking area. The guide emphasizes succession of the area from farmland to forest, and the variety of plants and animals in the different habitats along the way. The Red Trail begins where the Yellow Trail loops back. It is a fairly rough and sometimes wet trail that parallels the shoreline of the pond as far as the main inlet with a short loop at the end that then returns you along the same path.
One way: one mile. Park at the dead end of Lake Ridge Road, the main road through the Island Woods Subdivision. The White Trail is a half mile loop through second growth forest. The trail begins at either side of the cul de sac. It is fairly level and dry year round. Adjacent abandoned roads access Columbia’s “ghost town” Wells Woods. These roads are now privately owned and permission is necessary to walk them.

General Information
This trail system lies on 150 acres belonging to the town of Columbia and 125 acres belonging to Joshua’s Trust. While the Recreation Park portion includes active recreation facilities, the wooded portions serve as protection for the Columbia Lake watershed and as home to a considerable variety of wildlife. At the heart of the area is Utley Brook, a scenic watercourse which features 19th century mill ruins, beaver dams, several pond-like impoundments, and an extensive swamp. Please help protect these important features by taking only photographs, leaving only footprints, and following the guidelines below.

Yellow / White Crossover TrailThis trail connects the yellow and White trails just below the open water areas of Utley Swamp. Rock-hopping across the brook is required and may be difficult in high water conditions.
Rec Park Connector TrailThese two short white-blazed trails provide access from the Stonedust Trail to the Yellow Trail. One lies at either end of the rear parking lot in Recreation Park.
