THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,

'No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns,

Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent,

Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here.

They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,

Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell.'

CES School Fees:

School fees for CES students were due as of September 30th, 2012. These fees are mandatory for all students. Palliser Regional schools invoices CES for the number of students that we have enrolled, and we are required to pay them, regardless if we collect all the fees from our families. Any short fall from our collecting these fees will affect extra-curricular activities and year end field trips as the payment has to come from somewhere. Children who have unpaid fees may not be able to attend the above mentioned activities. Please contact the office to make payment arrangements for any unpaid fees

Christmas Concerts:

We will be holding our annual Grade 1-6 Christmas program on Thursday, December 20, 2012. We would like to extend an invitation to the community to attend. There will be both 1:00 & 7:00 pm performances. We are requesting any “Dr. Suess” type items for our Who-ville production. Kindergarten will have their Christmas performance on Friday, December 21st and our Early Learning Program will have their performance on December 13th.

Choir:

Important Music Dates: Thursday, November 8th – Remembrance Day Assembly 10:30am – Please have all students in choir dressed in white tops, with black/dark bottoms (no blue jeans, please). It would be great if they could also come with a poppy, or a small donation to purchase one from the office. Wednesday, December 5th – Kids’ Sing – All choir students will attend a practice during the school day, and then sing with the Lethbridge Symphony later that evening. Details to follow soon. Thursday, December 20th – C.E.S. Christmas Concert – ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Friday, January 25th – Choir students sing ‘O Canada’ at the Hurricane’s Hockey Game (free admission). Extra tickets may be purchased for family and friends. An order form will come home right after the Christmas Break. Music T-Shirts - The students involved in extra-curricular music programs will soon have the

opportunity to buy C.E.S. music t-shirts. In past years, money was raised at concerts to help subsidize this purchase. The hope is we will be able to use these t-shirts for upcoming performances. Sizes will be available in the music room. Contact Mrs. Berberich if you have any questions. An order form will be sent home the first week of November.

Playground & Bus parking:

We ask that everyone please take special care before and after school in the Playground Zone. It would be a tragedy if one of our children were to get hurt coming to school or going home because someone was driving in an unsafe manner. Also, our bus drivers are having a hard time parking their buses because people are parking in the bus parking zone. Please be aware that there is parking available at the rear of the school. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.

Kindergarten Fall Fund Raiser:

Once again the students are hard at work and that means that the kindergarten needs toys, equipment and field experiences. How does the kindergarten program pay for these things? With a fundraiser, of course! From November 7-26 we will be taking orders for fresh bacon $47.00 (5kg), Chicken Fingers $58.00 (4kg), Swedish Meatballs $57.00 (4kg), Chicken Cordon Swiss $70.00 (30 pcs). Order forms are available at the school, and on our CES website. Place your order soon and support the kindergarten children in your community. Thanks for your help.

U of L Student Teachers:

Starting on November 7th we will have 4 First year student teachers in our classrooms. They will be here until December 11th. The student teachers will observe 1/3 time, assist 1/3 time and teach 1/3 time. The regular classroom teacher will remain in the classroom while the student teacher teaches. SOCK IT TO EM DRIVE

Once again we are approaching the cold weather and that means cold feet. Let’s see how many warm feet

From students to staffers Newest additions at CES are homegrown

First year teacher Marcus Johnston and learning assistant, Lisa Gervais couldn’t be more at home than in the halls of Coalhurst Elementary School (CES). They were both raised in Coalhurst and attended school together from K-12. Johnston is now the newest grade 2-3 teacher and couldn’t be more excited to be coming back to his roots. “This community gave me so much,” says Johnston who was heavily into soccer growing up. “I was able to go a lot of places with soccer because of the support I had from the school.” Johnston, a physical education major is bringing his love of sport to CES and is now coaching mini volleyball and looking forward to engaging more kids in activity in the year ahead. “I want them to find an activity they can do their whole life.” Johnson is also hoping to show his students how much Coalhurst has to offer and encourage them to embrace the community. “I want them to know that Lethbridge doesn’t necessarily have more opportunities. Sometimes it’s better to have smaller classes and to be closer to your teachers. I’ve already told my class that I’d love to come to their grade 12 graduation if they stay here.” Johnson was able to travel overseas with soccer, play on provincial and national teams and eventually play for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, all without leaving Coalhurst. Gervais, who has worked at both the Coalhurst High School and CES for the last five years now has a full-time position working with both preschool and grade one students. She is also the program director of Kid Zone, the before and after school program at CES. “Being able to work with the teachers who taught me in the building I went to school in is really great,” says Gervais. She credits working in student services while attending Coalhurst High School for starting her on her career path which including the completion of an education assistant diploma at the Lethbridge College “That experience made me realize how much I love working with kids.” says Gervais. Both new staffers are bringing a new energy and passion to CES with a true appreciation to the benefits growing up in Coalhurst – something all students will benefit from.

Learning Assistant Lisa Gervais and Grade 2-3 teacher Marcus Johnston are the newest staff members at CES

and also both attended school in Coalhurst.
