2001 Neighbourhood Census Profiles

The Census is conducted once every five years by Statistics Canada to develop a national statistical portrait. The most recent survey was held on May 15, 2001. The City of Coquitlam Planning and Development Department has compiled data from several key census topics to provide a detailed overview for each of Coquitlam’s 12 residential communities. Specific census topics have been organized under the categories of People, Households and Dwellings. The analysis includes a comparison between the data for each community and the data for the entire city.

People: This section explores population change, population by age, marital status, ethnic origin, home language and level of education.

Households: This section looks specifically at household income, household type, family type, and number of children to provide an understanding of the overall household composition for each area of Coquitlam.

Dwellings: The physical composition of the built environment is explored by examining dwellings by structural type, tenure (the proportion of rented and owned accommodation), and by the age of housing stock.

As the designated Regional Town Centre for the northeast sector of the Greater Vancouver region, this profile area is the dynamic focus of higher density commercial and residential activity in Coquitlam. Major residen-tial, service and commercial projects continue to be attracted to Town Centre. The pedestrian-oriented High Street links the busy Coquitlam Centre Mall with mixed-use commercial and residential developments on the way to the City Hall, Justice Building and Library complex.

The Town Centre also features educational, cultural and recreational facilities. The David Lam campus of Douglas College and Pinetree Secondary School are located here, along with the Evergreen Cultural Centre. The City Centre Aquatic Complex, Town Centre Park and Pinetree Community Centre offer a wide variety of activities for participants of all ages.

Coquitlam’s Regional Town Centre will be linked by rapid transit to New Westminster, Surrey, Burnaby and Vancouver. Several stations are planned for the Town Centre, including a station near City Hall and another by the West Coast Express Station.

The Town Centre is one of eight regional town centres in the Greater Vancouver Region. It is the core of commercial activity for the City. Within this profile area are two shopping malls, Coquitlam Centre and Westwood, both of which have undergone major expansions. Pinetree Village and Sunwood Square are also well-established commercial centres. This area provides a wide range of services and retail outlets, easily acessible to both Coquitlam residents and those living in other northeast sector municipalities.

Coast Mountain BusLink

There are a number of major transit routes which provide regular and express service to Coquitlam residents. Some make connection with SkyTrain at Braid and Lougheed Stations. In addition, the 97-B Line provides express services between Lougheed Station and Coquitlam West Coast Express Station. For those who wish to park-and-ride, there are two locations: one at Lougheed and Barnet Highways, and the other at Lougheed Highway and King Edward Street.

West Coast Express

West Coast Express commuter rail operates five trains during weekday peak periods, connecting Mission, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody with downtown Vancouver. Travel time from the Coquitlam station, located in the Town Centre and the junction of the Barnet and Lougheed Highways, to the Waterfront station in Vancouver is just under 30 minutes.
