Institute has been focused on maintenance,

exploitation and development of national

energy system based on fossil fuels: hard coal

and lignite.

IEn has carried research and scientific

Development of new combustion technologies is a

permanent strategic part of IEn research.

EU policy rises new challenges for combustion

technologies:

- increase of renewable energy (co-firing, biomass burners)

- decrease of NOx from utility boilers

below 200 mg/Nm3 after year 2015,

- substantial decrease of CO2 emission

(oxy-combustion)

Two burners fired with wood dust from board production at fiber boards

company FIBRIS SA in Przemyśl. The burners of changeable heat power in

range from 1 to 3 MW were developped and adopted for operation with coal

fired stoker boiler OR-32.

Next two burners have been delivered for two similar OR-32 at another board

company - Koniecpolskie Zakłady Płyt Pilśniowych SA.

Special 5 MW burners for rural biomass combustion were designed for the

Dolna Odra power plant. The burners are a part of 20 MW biomass co-firing

installation designed by IEn. The installation is currently mounted and will

start in mid 2010.

Instytut Energetyki

Development of own design of swirl burners for

pulverized coal – over 20 years of experience,

implementation in dozens of utility boilers:

- high stability burners and start up burners,

- low NOx emission burners - within more than 15

years of co-operation with ECOENERGIA the burners

were implemented in 52 boilers

Example No 3

Low NOx combustion

Page 17: Towards new energy technologiespolsca.pan.pl/ppt/100325/JW.pdf• new technologies in energy sector, including electrical systems, • protection of environment against harmful effects

Instytut Energetyki

Decrease of NOx from utility boilers below 200 mg/Nm3 after year 2015

requires a new approach.

Combination of primary combustion modifications with SNCR (selective Non-

catalytic Reduction) at boilers over 500 MW heat output is a subject of

common research financed by one of Polish power plants.

This could be a cheaper alternative to SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)

method applicable for retrofit of relatively old Polish power plants.

The OP-650 boiler has been already reconstructed and combustion

optimization is currently going on. Emission target <300 mg/Nm3 is to be

obtained by primary methods while final reduction below 200 mg/Nm3 will be

achieved by SNCR.

The results should be known in mid 2010

Oxy-combustion

A solution for clean coal technologies?

IEn has invested in 0,5 MW combustion stand enabling

combustion experiments in semi-industrial conditions.

Results:

• two research projects has been performed resulting with

prototype of „oxy-burner” for coal (Polish patent application No

P–389182 )

• substantial participation in Polish national strategic project

(2010-2015) on oxy-combustion technologies

Biomass gasification

For distributed energy production we see

future in combination of modern

gasification technologies with fuel cells,

which allows for over 60 % efficiency in

electricity generation. The air gasification

of wood chips of 10% moisture content

produces a gas of low heating value in the

range 5 to 6 MJ/Nm3.
