•  Thestorybeginsinthe1750s,whenBritainandthecoloniesfoughtawaragainsttheFrenchandtheirIndianallies.ThewarleftBritainwithhugedebts,andavastnewempiretoprotect.TheBritishgovernmentpassedlawsplacingtightercontrolsandnewtaxesonthecolonists.Colonistswereangeredasthey,forthemostpart,hadbeenabletomaketheirownlawsanddeterminetheirowntaxes.

•  Patriots(alsocalledWhigs)wereAmericanswhobelievedthecolonieshadtherighttogovernthemselves.

•  Loyalists(alsocalledTories)werecolonistswhowereloyaltoBritainandfaithfulsubjectstotheking.

•  Neutralistswerecolonistswhodidnotwishtotakesides.

•  TheimagefirstappearedintheMay9,1754,issueofBenFranklin’sPennsylvaniaGazette.Bythe1750s,FranceandGreatBritainhadbeenarguingforyearsovertheextentoneanother’slandholdingsintheAmericas.FranklinconsideredtheAmericancoloniestobedangerouslyfragmentedand,throughthiscartoonanditsaccompanyingarticle,hopedtoconvincetheAmericancoloniesthattheywouldhavegreatpoweriftheyunitedagainstthethreatofFrenchexpansioninNorthAmerica.

ThesebattlesshowedthatAmericanswerenotonlywillingtofightfortheir

rights,buttheywerealsowillingtodieforthem.
