These monuments are dedicated to the retainers of Satsuma, who devoted themselves to the flood control project in the Owari domain (today's Gifu), imposed by the shogunate government in the Horeki period (mid 18th century). Hirata Yukie, chief retainer of the Satsuma domain, was in charge of the project. To honor their achievement, exchange programs have long been taking place between Kagoshima and the cities of Ogaki, Kaizu, and Hashima in Gifu prefecture, where those retainers worked for the project.

Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle was characterized by its manor style house without a castle tower. This design was based on the idea "People are the stronghold of the castle." It was rare in the Japan of that age to have had no castle tower for a powerful lord of over 720,000 koku.

Genuine Oshima Silk pongee
Oshima Silk is produced after going through more than 30 complicated pro-cesses. It is fea-tured by the beauty created by thousands of splash weaving. Light weight and elasticity of this silk fabric are other reasons why it is loved so many people.

Yaku Cedar Products
Yaku-sugi cedars have weathered the hardships more than 1,000 years on Yakushima, the island designated as World Natural Heritage. The intri-cate year rings im-plying the long-last-ing years are the characteristics of Yaku cedar products of tea utensils and tables. Because of the high content of the resin, they are hard to rot. The more they are used, the more taste can be gained.

Satsuma Tin ware
In the Edo Period, tin was discovered and a tin mine was made on the lo-cation of a suburb of Ka-goshima City. This led to the prosperous production of tin crafts. The beautiful and subdued sheen of sileverish or whitish color is quite worth seeing. These are popular items as mementos or as gifts.

Bamboo Products
Kagoshima is home to bamboo produc-tion. Making the best use of its elasticity and strength, a wide range of articles for daily use, in-cluding baskets, chopsticks, strainers and lunch boxes, are being produced. Kinko Bay is an enclosed bay surrounded by inlets, but yet it is deeper than 200 meters at some points. This provides abundant varieties of fishes. After all sorts of marine products caught in Kinko Bay and costal tunas are landed at the fish market, the market bustles with lively auctions. Special “Fish Market Tours” are organized every Saturday be-tween March and November by the youth group of the Kagoshima Hotel and Ryokan Association. Visitors can see and feel the real presence of the early morning auction and other daily activities at the fish market.
