For some folks just hopingto wake up, the end justifies themeans, so they grab a warmed-over cuppa joe at McDonald’s or aCasey’s, “to go.” (And don’t let the doorhit you on the fanny on your way out.)

For a coffee snob, this just won’t do!They want their coffee to stay.

When the weather outside isfrightful during a hectic holiday season’shustle and bustle, the chill may encour-age shoppers to beat feet from storefrontto storefront. But our area’s one-of-a-kind coffee emporiums provide respite,a haven for as long as you want. Whileyou sip the steaming, fragrant elixir oflife, you can even compare gifts. (Forwho would dare embark on a retailtherapy session alone? Humbug! )

Throughout the burgs and villes ofILLINOISouth are coffeehouses that

pays great attention to ambiance. (Read:art and interior architecture.) Mokka’swalls are done in pallet wood and cor-rugated aluminum. Artists do murals onthe chalkboard wall; kids create theirown masterpieces on a chalkboard tablewhile their parents, who’ve finallydropped after shopping, may relax.

Sacred Grounds, famed for itsvegetarian menu, rotates works fromlocal artists. Ophelia’s Cup in Olney

does the same, often spotlighting elemen-tary-school talent. They’ve displayedworks by autistic artists. And you can helpyourself to a book, as well as leave one ora few, in the shop’s book nook.

Not sure what the brew du jour is?Check out the Facebook page, which manystores update as often as daily, among themThe Coffeehouse Co. in O’Fallon. SolidGrounds in Newton prides itself on a dif-ferent flavor every day.

And don’t be disappointed to find yourcaffeine dealer closed on this day or that.Java Joe’s Coffee House, the pride ofCentralia, is shuttered Sundays and Mon-days… just like most self-respecting localbarbershops.

The Abbey doesn’t sound like thename for a coffee shop. Well, Belleville lo-cals will tell you it’s all that, and more. Notonly will you find fair-trade coffees and

teas, but crafts from aroundthe globe. The Abbey leads abit of a double life, so ifespresso has kindled a holi-day romance, after 5 it’s timeto warm it up with spiritsand maybe a bit of mellowmusic, often live jazz.

There’s no time like theholidays, of course. It’s themost wonderful time of theyear, so let’s have some coffee, and tawk.

Makes Little Jack Frost

GetLostJavaJavaHotHot

will make you forget there was ever apremium coffee that starts with Star andends with bucks. And most of these javajoints serve freshly baked pastries that are“slap-your-grandma good.”

We even found one place thatroasts its own beans, the Village Kaf-feehaus in Maeystown, via the Lil’Red Roaster. But you’ll have to holdoff on your fix until Saturday, becausemost places in this authentic Germanvillage aren’t open until the Wochenende(weekend).

Sacred Grounds in Edwardsvillegets its beans from a St. Louis companycalled Mississippi Mud. Others use beansfrom fine roasters in The Lou such asChauvin or Kaldi’s. But the importantthing is what they do to the brew, whether you like it black or all frou-frou—a latte, mocha or cappuccino(gesundheit).

The baristas at Mokka Café inColumbia spice up their brews withpumpkin flavoring at Thanksgiving. Butwhy stop there? They make pumpkin-flavored gooey butter cake and whip upa pumpkin-pie latte. Closer to Santa-time is when you can enjoy a pepper-mint mocha or gingerbread latte here.
