CITY TOUR

Merida city was founded in January 6 th , 1542, by the Spanish Francisco de Montejo, where the Mayan natives had a great wellknown city called “T’ho”, before the Spaniards arrived. The Catedral “San Ildefonso” located in the main square, and was built with the stones of the original city.

DZIBILCHALTUN & PROGRESO

Dzibilchaltun “The Place of Writings on Stone” is a Mayan city located only 15 kilometers from Merida. Dzibilchaltun is one of the most impressive astronomical Mayan center where you will also see an underground river (cenote). We will visit the museum, the typical Mayan house, walk along the ecological path, lined with all the trees from the region, as well as the pyramids. The Temple of the Seven Dolls stands out from the rest, this is where each year on March 21 st the equinox gives a show; finally we will visit the natural well Xlacah. Our next stop will be to in the seaport of Progreso to enjoy

the beautiful beaches and cooling breezes off the Gulf of Mexico, which are great for swimming.

IZAMAL

“The city of the hills” located just in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula could be the most ancient colonial city and also it is known as the “City of Three Cultures”, Izamal brings together elements of the preHispanic, colonial and contemporary eras, where we can find five pyramids, the main of them is Kinich Kakmo, there are other buildings as the Rabit, Kabul and Itzamatul. Izamal is considered a

colonial jewel because all the buildings are painted with the yellow color and its main attractive is the convent that was built over the Mayan pyramids using the stones of them for its construction. Its founder was Fray Diego de Landa, famous because he burned the Mayan codex. Included services:

IZAMAL LIGHT & SOUND

Izamal is sometimes known as the city of hills referring to the covered pyramids found by the Spanish on their arrival; and also as the city of the three cultures, for the pre Hispanic, colonial traces of its past, as well as contemporary influences.

Enjoy a magic night in Izamal, visiting the Franciscan Convent of the XVII century, with the extraordinary biggest atrium of America, the second biggest in the world. This tour includes a stroll in a horsedrawn carriage through the romantic and colonial

cobblestone streets past by archeological testimonies of the city of three cultures and after that you can enjoy a delicious dinner at the typical restaurant “Kinich”. At the same time you can stroll around and shop handcrafts, honey and other typical products of the region.

At 8:30 pm you will enjoy the Light and Sound show called “The Mayans Light”, in the Franciscan Convent. This stunning show mixes architectural lighting effects, audio and still image projections in the sublime setting of the atrium of the Franciscan exconvent.

CELESTUN Located 96 km from Merida on the west of Yucatan,

this port of fishermen, besides having crystalline beaches, Celestun is part of the world patrimony of the biosphere reserve by the same name. A route in boat to go to the ria allow us to discover

the mangroves, the island of the birds, the lagoons of Valeosera and Quintin, in this reserve live armadillos, crocodiles, ocelot, turkeys, ducks and infinity of birds, the fresh water eyes and abundant vegetation, and you

can see the main attraction that is the flamingos, also called pink flamingos. This tour is one of the most attractive places in Yucatan.

CENOTES DE CUZAMA

At first in this route, we are going to see the “Hacienda Ednakan”, with its gothic church, then we will visit The Hacienda Chuncanan, where we are going to take a ride in the “Truck” (that is pulled by mules on narrow tracks), to visit the cenotes “Chelemtun” and “Bolonchojol”, where you can swim and refresh in its crystalline waters; after that, we will visit Homun, where the third cenote of Cuzama is located. When we return, we will visit the Hacienda Tepic, now a restaurant, to enjoy its delicious food.

UXMAL & KABAH

Located 73 km from Merida, you will observe 2 of the biggest representatives of the Puuc Art. Uxmal, show us what Puuc Art constructed in the shapes of its buildings, with smooth walls and ornamented frieze, most of the Uxmal buildings, belong to the classic mayan period and some to the delayed average phase. Chaac “The God of Rain” is represented in multiple buildings, in the Governor’s Palace, Nuns’ Quadrangle, The Magicians Pyramid, among others. Uxmal is one of the greatest Mayan ceremonial centers well decorated.

The finest example of preHispanic architecture, Kabah, located 65 miles south of Merida and 14miles southeast of Uxmal. Kabah, where we found a quadrangle called “CodzPop” that means coiled bed roll, The

Palace of Chaac Masks, The Columns’ Temple and “The Arch”, that is thought to be the center of the city and the entrance to the “sacbe”.

UXMAL LIGHTS & SOUND On Monday November 30 th , we have a reservation, for the

congresses participants, in part of the evening in order to go to the “Light and Sound Show” in Uxmal “The Thricebuilt City” and “Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity”, is one of the Mayan archaeological zones more restored with the best maintenance and its vestiges are amazing; beautiful carvings and architectural masterpieces expect your admiration.

After the visit to the archaeological zone, we will take a time to visit the handcrafts shops and also the assistants will have a dinner in a hotel of the zone; the function is in Spanish, for the foreign people, is possible to rent a translator that come in different languages as they are: English, French, Italian and Dutch. The Light and Sound show starts at 19:00 hrs in winter and 20:00 hrs in summer.

CHICHEN ITZA

On December 4 th of 2009, will be the congress closing Ceremony and afterwards it will be possible to go to Chichen– Itza. This famous Mayan archeological zone is located one hour and a half from Merida. The name of ChichenItza derives from the Mayan words “chi”= mouth, “chen” = well, “itzá” is the tribe that inhabited the area; the site is divided into three areas: the north group, (distinctly Toltec); the central group (of the early

period), and the wellknown as the “Old Chichen”. Between these first groups we will visit only the first two ones.







ChichenItzá, the capital of the Mayan empire, the biggest and most impressive astronomical Mayan center, where you can admire the Kukulkan pyramid that is a wonder of the world, the Temple of the Warriors, the Grand Ball Court, the Group of the Thousand Columns, the Observatory and the huge well like Sacred Cenote or sacrificial water well.

PUUC ROUTE

Only one hour from Merida, it’s waiting for you a variety of visits to the Mayan civilization. Wellknown like “The Puuc Route” that means “hills”. The sites include the caves of Loltun that mean stone flower, the next stop is the archaeological Mayan sites of Labna that means “old house”, inhabited between the years 750 and 1000 A.C. by 1500 or 2500 people. Nowadays there are 4 recovered buildings with many knolls, between these can be mentioned The Palace with about 70 “chultunes” (water cistern), not visible now. The arch of Labna (17 km) and you will see Xlapak that means “old wall”. There are 14 knolls with 3 pyramids in process of reconstruction and

finally at 13 km you will see Sayil that means “The Place Of The Ants”, Sayil dates from the years 8001000 A.C. in this place, there are 2 buildings known as The Palace of Three Floors and The Observatory. We finalize here this excursion.

SOTUTA DE PEON

A visit to the henequenproducing haciendas of Yucatan is an incredible experience. These plantations, once the bread and butter of the economy, are now the guardians of that auspicious lifestyle. The contrasting scenery and comfortable architecture make visitors feel right at home. At 9:00 am departure from your lobby in direction of the ecological reserve of Cuxtal, where the hacienda Sotuta De Peon is located about

25 km south of Merida.







The visit through the hacienda starts with one of the most important attractions: The Machine House, where the henequen shredding was used to render fibers (SISAL) from the henequen plant. Then we continue the sightseeing to the sisal factory, where the plant is converted into distinct strands of what will become twine, rope or burlap bags. After that, we board a wagon (truck) that is pulled by mules on narrow tracks through the

henequen plantation to a Mayan hut, where you observe how the Mayan people used to live. Continuing to the natural well ZhulHa, with safe installations, stairway, wood handle, beautifully illuminated. Here you can swim in the clear, refreshing waters. Towels, goggles and safety jackets are provided. Then we return to the hacienda, you will have time to enjoy the pool and the other installations of this marvelous building, such as the main house, restaurant and bar. Time for lunch.

Day 4 Breakfast in the Hotel. On our way towards Cancun we stop at the 7 shaded lagoon of Bacalar to take some pictures. Continuation to Tulum. Visit of the archaeological site located at the Sea. Transfer to Cancun. Checkin to the beautiful and comfortable resort in the Heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone and white sandy beach in front of Isla Mujeres. Dinner and overnight in Ambiance Villas. Day 4 Breakfast in the Hotel. Half day visit to the indigenous villages of the Tzotzils and Chamulas with incredible handcraft markets. You will enjoy the visits of these communities and their churches. Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula. Lunch in Restaurant Le Jardin in San Cristobal.
